  • In this video you will see me changing the final drive floating seal of the old excavator Kobelco SK042 (year model 1992).
The work is done without removing the final drive from the machine.

You and the dog did a great job!
Thank you for a technical and impressive documentation of the job.
The Kobelco SK042 is very similar to the Takeuchi TB045.
It also looks like a Kabaya (KYB) final drive (MAG-33V-460)

      Glad you enjoyed it!
The dog is the brain of the operation, I am just doing the job :)

Thank you for the video. I was somewhat disappointed as I like to find out what happened after 13:05. Removal of the remaining parts are not straight forward. I am struggling with sk320.

Once at this stage, you just need to open the big nut in the bottom of the assembly. You can see me putting it back in at 22:21. This nut makes the preload on the bearing and seals. It was really little tight on my machine. Once remove, only the bearing are holding the hub in place. Hope this help you and you get successful repair on your machine.

Thanks for the video, i am also currently working on a similar drive, from a Yanmar B27-2, My drive failed, been taking it apart, but it's been a nightmare, most of the locking bolts hex heads were rusted away but so far i have reached the area with the giant locking nut, trying to get that off, do you have any info on what type of tool you made to remove it? and does the 2 parts just pop open after removing the nut in order to access the seal and bearing? Idk if i can salvage this drive though, so far iv discovered 3 issues, on the gear side there was a small shaft with its splines/grooves completely stripped, but everything else looked okey, after opening the hydraulic side the secondary shaft had it's inner splines/grooves totaled and i found 3 needle bearing needles just sitting in the hydraulic compartment (near the pressure plate?) but i did not find any other needles or whatever was left of that needle bearing, which is very odd. PS do you know what the smaller hex bolt head is under the area where the long wire comes out from the main lid? i opened it up but there's just bunch of steel balls going around in a circle, no idea what to make of that.

Hi neighbor! I watch some of your videos, thanks for the content.
The giant locking nut is fairly easy to remove once you remove the 4 locking nuts that are against it, you can see them on my video at 12:55. First you need to remove these. Then I made a tool photos.app.goo.gl/CH66R6byhmYGLz2SA that fits between the outer part of the drive and holds on the lower part of the nut, so I could turn it. I hope this help you removing it! After that, the unit will split apart.
Sounds like the shaft missing the groove is the one transmitting power from hydraulic side to gear side. I don't know where you can find the parts. For the smaller hex bolt, I don't remember seeing anything like it. I hope you can get it fixed!

23:08 you can also see how I used the tool to put it back on.

Hi man, thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I am not sure that your problem is similar to mine. I would say that you need to identify if it's leaking gear oil (very thick and usually smells bad and looks dark) or hydraulic oil (lighter and normally does not smell so bad). According to my knowledge if it's hydraulic oil then you should look at the hydraulic motor side (inner side of the tracks) and if it's gear oil then it's most likely the same issue as I had. Start by removing the protection plate from the hydraulic motor so you can see if a connector is leaking! Hopes this helps you.
