They’re still animals with their own personalities and quirks and it’s so fun to see them get distracted or make a mistake every once in a while because even if you’re a tough hardworking guide dog you sometimes need a new stuffed animal.
I have a service dog in training (she’s task trained but we are perfecting and doing more scent work) and the other day she went into a restaurant with me for the first time and this girl tried to sit on the bench next to me I was like nooo she didn’t really understand that she needed to be under the table at first 😭

I always laugh at people that will come up to me and say she isn't a service dog because she is trained to alert me when people come up from the side or back of me. So she is somewhat looking around every once in awhile. So many people think service dogs/guide dogs have to be these perfect little robots and are all trained the same. Like nope just like humans they aren't always perfect, we have hiccups like a squirrel running right in front of us at the zoo and we have to break concentration for a few seconds 😂🤦
I do want to agree with you, however with a cousin who needs his guide dog to be "on duty" whenever their harness is engaged to ensure his safety.I hope someone is monitoring to make sure it does not become a pattern as a blind person needs to have faith they will be safe.
@Judith Thirlwell I mean lifeguards for instance even have shifts because focus wanes after a certain amount of time. Obviously guide dogs are selected based on aptitude but it's not unreasonable for a sentient being to have a distraction. I'm sure they know the difference between when it would be life threatening vs not

That being said the kind of behavior this dog is displaying is contrary to how it should have been trained, when guide dogs are in best and harness their job is to keep their human counterpart safe by providing the services they were trained for. As for the rest of your claims, I hate to say it but your logic is completely off base. Do you think the cows that provide the dairy and meat you eat are being paid? What about the bees that pollenate plants responsible for our food supply and help create breathable air… do you see them getting special treats? No, you don’t, because they are simply doing the jobs they were created to do. When it comes service dogs they are often specifically bred and trained since birth, they are considered partners & have a job to perform. They’re “paid” by getting the love and care from their partner and partner’s family, the same as any other domestic animal. I can get behind a statement like “owing your independence and safety” to your service animal. My partner has a service dog that can pull her to the exit of a store if she's beginning to have a panic attack. The dog can find the exit in any store, even a very big one, but she often will go to the exit through the dog food aisle.
Our service dogs all have personality. It is hard to imagine them as only tools with no amount of character. I was at a grocery store with my service dog looking for my favorite tea. I couldn’t find my tea and she was persistent in alerting me almost to the point of a bark. I gave her the GO FIND DOOR command and she very eagerly trotted over to the bench that was right next to the door yet when I kept walking toward the door, she blocked me and made me sit on the bench 😅
i had a friend who’s service dog kept alerting to my POTS. i was being stubborn but also didn’t want her attention on me in case she missed something with her handler. i ignored her until i got so dizzy i fell, and i swear that dog was happy, like she was saying “i told you so!” 😅
My service dog has her moments like this too! 😂❤ She definitely has inquisitively sniffed something longer than is polite and she knows it’s not time for a smell tour when working…. And I tell her to leave it… she does of course because she’s well trained and a very good girl, but not without giving me a “ what mom? Me sniffing too long at that person’s shoe that smells like dog and bacon??? I don’t know what you’re talking about…. “ look on her face! 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤ And the very second someone at a restaurant who knows we’re regulars there complements her excellent training and behavior…. She’s off leash in a perfect unmoving downstay….. she’s rolling on her back wiggling like an untrained goofy puppy! 😂😂😂😂 I’m just like…. Get up! Yes you are very cute…. Stop giving me that contagious doggie smile and those big puppy eyes…. Get up and back into a downstay! 😂😂😂❤❤❤ I love her more than words can express! She does her job with professionalism, a bit of doggie goofing off, loves her job, is such a good girl, and makes me feel I can get thru the tough days with a smile because she’s good at her job, but still acts like a endearing goofball! ❤
A friend of my sister-in-law had a guide dog that had to go back for retraining because he kept eating all the snacks on the coffee table after church. He was a very quiet, sneaky snacker so his handler didn't notice and everyone else felt too awkward to say anything about it, so the dog got away with eating the snacks for weeks before it was dealt with.
I love this! Hes so cute! I wish more people got to see this side of service dogs. I'm currently training my goldendoodle to be a service dog and it's a looong process. The fact that he's not 100% perfect in every command as a puppy drives people nuts. I hate that people can't see all the progress we've made instead of only ever seeing his flaws.

I work in a library and this blind old lady and her guide dog come in a lot to get audio books. Lately we’ve had construction on the sidewalks so she gives us her mail so we can put it in the mailbox for her. Her dog is a very good boy but sometimes he takes her to a different exit door so he can sniff through the trash can lol
My best friend has a guide dog and one day we got separated from each other at the store. My friend told his dog to find me. It was the sweetest thing he let go of the dog’s harness and the good boy knew who I was and took me to my friend l.
😂 So good to know they are the same abroad. I'm in the UK and my Dad has had several guide dogs over my life. They have all loved cuddly toys. I also know of one owned by someone else who stole multiple toys from Superdrug many years ago
