I attended a recital in Buenos Aires in 1979, his last one in Argentina I believe. Exactly this repertoire. Unforgettable experience, hard to believe an 86 year old man was on stage. Not perfect, not flawless, but overwhelming. Was he the best of all time? Impossible to ascertain. However it is completely clear that the insertion of the guitar into the mainstream classical world greatly happened due to his art, vision, hard work and persistence.

Today I am truly discovering Segovia and I say this because I really had not stopped to meditate on his way of playing and it turns out that in our Venezuelan Maestro Alirio Díaz (I write from Venezuela) whom I have detailed since the writer was a young teenager , I perceive the touch of Segovia, that is to say, several of his nuanced ways of doing the accelerandos, the ralentandos, the impetus when playing of Don Alirio, are very Segovian, of course Maestro Díaz also has his own fingerprints in the form of make your music. One as a disciple has the powerful influence of his, or his Teachers. I remember here that Maestro Alirio Díaz was one of the most outstanding students of Segovia to the point that he was the one who succeeded him at the Chigiana Academy of Siena.
Thank you Daniele Magli for this and so many other fantastic musical gifts that you find and share.... and thank you Jimmy Carter for inviting the brilliant and amazing Andres Segovia to the White House.

From today's perspective, there being so many fantastic classical guitar players, the most beautiful aspect of Segovia was the artistry of his mind. Watching "Los Olivos" convinces me of this.

Segovia's the Greatest Guitarist ever during his time and mine so far and I hope I'll be able to hear someone else as good but I'm not expecting that to happen. You won't hear or see this kind of class in the White House today and if you find someone to play near his talent they probably won't show up because they wouldn't be amoungst the trash that resides there now!

I saw him in concert the same year at Lavenham Church in the UK. I was only 6 feet from him for 2 hours straight! Got to shake his hand afterwards and say "thankyou" (about a dozen times as I was in shock).
I just commented that this was the same year that I saw him in London. Meet the imbecille who lost Segovia's autograph. I was framing it. Had it in a storage unit with most of my belongings and never saw them again. It is CV one of the few material possessions I still regret losing but the experience of meeting him remains.

86yrs old, most men need help getting out of bed and to the bathroom and Segovia is playing a concert..i bet he wished every concert he played in the last 20yrs of his life he could show the audience his speed of his youth.
He was 16 years old when he played his first public performance. Here he is 70 years later! That in itself is an accomplishment. Yes the speed is gone but his unique interpretive skills is still there. A young Segovia must have been quite impressive. Like a lot of young guitarists playing with great speed is one of their goals. I have not heard recordings of Segovia in his twenties or thirties. I suspect that he was a very fast player.
Living Legend- saw this broadcast on public television back in the day. Though felt sorry for him from 2:46 - 2:54. Despite the memory lapse the Maestro carried on. Reportedly he later said the stage lighting was terrible as he was used to performing in a darker setting. Sometimes the hardest playing is totally in the open- no reverb, EQ, or filters to hide behind. Some say Segovia played on too long and should've retired gracefully. Even Heifetz, Callas, and others turned to teaching in their later years. But artistry is a passion that runs deep, or maybe the Maestro's accountant said he had to keep playing concerts to maintain a lifestyle for his family. We'll never know. Regardless, classical guitarists ride on the Maestro's shoulders due to his superhuman efforts, but I don't think others will be able to pack audiences like he, Parkening, Williams, and Bream could. The hope is that classical guitar will continue, and its repertoire will expand...
Segovia was the iconic performer who created the sound and technique that made the guitar iconic. With that said, you are totally oblivious to the status of the guitar today. 50 years ago there were maybe 10 or 15 world renowned classical guitarists. Today there are thousands of world class players - maybe tens of thousands - most of whom you and I have never heard of, and many capable of technical feats that go beyond most of the top players from the past. You can probably spend the next 5 years on You Tube charting all the guitarists from Asia and you might still be missing many. You hardly have to worry about the guitar going silent.
Phil Wilson respect your opinion. Yes, pedagogy has improved with lots of players. Technique is but a means to an end these days. Agree with Maestro Parkening that today’s players are very good be they from Asia, Europe, wherever. But their technique takes more than straight wrists and a clean tone, as it’s a cookie cutter sound. Yes, classical guitar will continue, although Marcelo Kayath has a very good YT video regarding the future of classical guitar- it’s repertoire is limited and many players are recycling the same solos as are you and I. Thank goodness for composers like Brower and others who’ve added to our music, but even that’s getting old too. I started out as a drummer in school symphonic/marching band, also still play the flute (badly) but even its repertoire far outclasses the guitar. We guitarist are very limited in sight reading, rarely play in flat key signatures, and we play transcriptions. Maybe you have done the same, but I’ve had the opportunity to study with one of Pepe Romero’s teaching assistants at UCSD. Fantastic experience- even Pepe has said (and still does in his masterclasses) it takes more than fantastic technical feats to make a player. Overall, are the new players packing halls like Williams, Bream (whom I’ve seen In concert)? Are they commissioning new pieces? Likely not a whole lot. Are you asking me if I’m renouncing the guitar? Or do I think it’ll disappear? You’re missing my discussion. If you’re ready, I look forward to your world class classical guitar album, and achievements that surpass players of the past whose shoulders we all rest upon...
unfortunately I think that lots of guitarists surpassed him, but he is very famous for being an advocate and bringing the guitar to different areas of the world. But he is not the greatest. Agustin Barrios, and Julian Bream, to name a few have such a huge spirit in their music that I think overshadows Segovia. And then there's voice. Narciso Yepes doesn't have that "perfect" tone that Segovia would have liked, but I still prefer his interpretations of tarrega.

Tarega and Segovia and others were the precursors and promoters of the modern guitar, but its not a lost instrument. He still has the ear to know how the composer meant it to be heard. The playing is secondary at his age . Interpretation is everything.
Saw him in concert a couple of years earlier in the Twin Cities. It was his 50th tour of the US. Never forget it.

unfortunately I think that lots of guitarists surpassed him, but he is very famous for being an advocate and bringing the guitar to different areas of the world. But he is not the greatest. Agustin Barrios, and Julian Bream, to name a few have such a huge spirit in their music that I think overshadows Segovia. And then there's voice. Narciso Yepes doesn't have that "perfect" tone that Segovia would have liked, but I still prefer his interpretations of tarrega.

Tarega and Segovia and others were the precursors and promoters of the modern guitar, but its not a lost instrument. Gods gift and talents are being expressed by many inspired by this wonderful instrument.
