    Really 90% of the time you would be charging at home. Also you can adjust how many amps you can draw, this setting was not in the video, who knows where she had it set. I thought superchargers are supposed to do 80% in 30 minutes.

    • @Caroliano
      @Caroliano 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      +Darren Rich 50% in 20 minutes, 80% in 40 minutes, if charging from zero. Full charge is supposed to be 75 minutes, so I don't know why it was shown 2h for her.

    • @UTUBESUCK666

      And she charge the battery to 100%, which no one does! You charge for enough juice to get to the next charging station + a few mile to spare.

      I've been to over 200 SuperChargers on my 48 State road trip. It rarely took over an hour, many times 30 min or less. When you first plug it in it shows a longer time until the charging speed cranks up....

  • @marshgre
    @marshgre 8 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    The reporters approach to charging is incorrect. You do not need to charge to 100% (the likely reason it said two hours at the super charger). If she charged to 80% she would've been on the road a lot quicker and still had plenty of range to continue her trip. I find many people in the media still miss this simple concept - guess they are still stuck in the gasoline paradigm where you have to stand by your car and wait for it to fill up.
    Look up Bjorn Nyland here on TH-cam he'll show you how to road trip a Tesla complete with tips on how to charge the fastest.

    • @jral6395

      Yup. Plus she was sharing a charger with another Tesla. That means 2x slower charging rates. Useful tip, not too many people know

    How the hell can it take 2 hours at a supercharger?

    • @stevenberry54
      @stevenberry54 8 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      +Landon Thomas If she's charging it to 100% (the last 20% takes a while). But in real-world road tripping scenarios, you only charge what you need to make it to the next charger or to your destination (or any buffer you want). So realistically with the speed from 0 to 80% it's the quickest, and would only actually take 25-30 min for typical needs. Besides, people always fail to mention you charge at home and wake up every morning with a full charge.

    • @firefox39693
      @firefox39693 8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Steven Berry I understand that 0 to 80% is the quickest, but from 0 to 100 it's actually supposed to take 75 minutes, NOT 120 minutes(2 hours). I've looked it up on their website.

    • @oldieznut1
      @oldieznut1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      But I thought Tesla's electrical engineers would've gotten around that.

    • @babybirdhome
      @babybirdhome 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Landon Thomas They have, but it isn't worth the expense and trouble to do it for the 5% use case of two cars having low enough charge and using the same charger at the same time both needing maximum current at the same time for the same length of time. In the real world, most of the time when chargers are at capacity, one car will have come in 10-30 minutes earlier, and not be using the maximum capacity when the second car connects, so it has very little impact. It isn't worth doubling the cost of the Supercharger network to address that issue.
      Gas stations have the same problem when the reservoirs start to get low, which also could've been fixed, but even after 80 years of use, that also still hasn't been "fixed". It just isn't worth the expense.

  • @wil2354

    I drive a Model S P85D. When I'm doing a trip, I never charge more than 45 minutes. You never charge to 100%. Usually 60-80% is way enough.

      It's a commuter car, not meant for long trips. That's why I would get a E Hybrid for home charging and worry free driving. You have to plan your trip around charing the battery, LOL.
      Buy a Tesla for showing off your wealth and drive it once a week to the church or golf course. But a Porsche Macan for everyday driving. It's fun, fast, and love the sound of the exhaust.

    • @rocketman1058
      @rocketman1058 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Your comment sounds like BS, so you're telling me you're doing +360km daily, right? Moreover, u can't compare the fun and acceleration of any tesla to anything like porsche or ferrari or whatever. If owned a Porsche Macan you would pay in service maintenance in 7 to 10 years even more money than you paid for the car, which makes it more expensive than a tesla. LOL

    • @InSaN3ViSioN
      @InSaN3ViSioN 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      ROFL. Buy a Porsche for everyday driving? To burn gasoline everyday and hear some shitty exhaust note? No thanks

  • @RMarkNolan

      I know right? "Waste time charging?" Yeah 20-30 minutes for 300+km or range? I'd take it any day. 2 hours to charge?! LOLOL!!!!! Does she not know she was parked RIGHT BESIDE another tesla in the supercharger station? That means she was sharing a battery with another car which = 2x more time for charging. ALSO, she was planning to charge to 100%?! Who does that?! Almost every tesla owner knows that you DO NOT CHARGE TO 100%. 0-85% = 20-30 minutes. 85-100% = Over 1 hour. Get it right?

    Overall the Model X and S are amazing cars. Everyone who drives them loves them!

    The idea is to drive for 300km (180mi) or so and then take a half an hour break to rest and recharge 60-80% which is presumably something you'd do anyway after 2hrs or more of continuous driving and then rinse and repeat if you run out of charge again. It's really a minor hassle... on those few days a year you do a long trip otherwise you will never notice the battery and actually save time by not stopping for gas.
    Her 2hr recharge, even if she is going for full is either a malfunction or a malicious lie.

    The problem with many Tesla reviews is that they do not understand how to deal with charging and estimation of range. One shout NOT just look at the range left in the dashboard. As she said that will jump depending on the terrain. The way to do it, is to put in the destination in the GPS and use the energy screen with the trip tab. This is pretty accurate and a bit on the conservative side if you drive slightly above speed limits. Using that and put int the next spuercharger you can go from supercharger go the next with an average of 30 minutes charging for every 2 hours af driving. That's when you really should take a rest and stop anyway. So in essence no time wasted waiting.

    If she knew anything about the car, it would not take nearly that long to charge. She can adjust the charging rate, she can park in an empty charging slot and not share the current. She can adjust the doors and most everything about the car that she did not like, including the regen braking. Tesla gives you the ability to extend your range or turn off a lot of features to make it more ICE-like (internal combustion engine). Or, turn them on, like the creep mode so that your car creeps forward at red lights when you remove your foot from the brake. A better feature is to use autopilot which will automatically creep the car to follow the car in front. Perhaps it should be called stalker mode.

    If you are somebody who drives more than 250 miles a day, do not get a Tesla. But if you are like most people who drive less than 250 miles a day, you'll be able to charge at home, which takes less than a minute extra time to plug it in, then go about what you need to do any way, like sleeping. Many Tesla owners are not tree huggers. They bought the car for the performance and driving experience. Anyone who hasn't driven a Tesla is like someone who only saw Michael Jackson's picture but never saw him perform. Yes, the long trips take longer, but supercharger is free, forever. Usually, the stops only take 20-40 minutes, perfect time to take a break.

    • @janiceleonard8132
      @janiceleonard8132 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kellie Na Here's the thing about the range though. Sure, maybe most people don't drive more than 250 miles a day but consider that highways are now approaching 70 mph which reduces EPA range even more and people love their A/C and heaters.
      Not to mention how cold weather can reduce range by over a 1/3. It's best to get the highest kilowatt hour battery for future-proofing. 400 miles for an electric car should cover these effects that really cut range down

    • @adriencailleaux9689
      @adriencailleaux9689 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm confused when i read your comment ..
      At first it seems you say that tesla are not meant for long trips and that if you don't drive too much you can charge it at home .. As if you couldn't do that if you were someone who drives a lot daily ?
      And then you say long trips takes longer but supercharger is free, and the time needed to stop ( 20-40min ) and recharge is a perfect time to take a break, which seems to makes the tesla perfect for long trips ..
      Plus the " many tesla owner are not tree huggers " reference and the comparison with people who never saw MJ performs seems so irrelevant when you contradict yourself right after ..
      So which is it .. ?

    • @anirudhhhh
      @anirudhhhh 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tesla battery is heated and cooled the temperature of battery is controlled so there is no drop

    • @gregallard8438
      @gregallard8438 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cindy, our experience with the base model x is just as you described. I'd qualify that for Long haul trips, where you must travel greater 400 miles per day, superchargers are essential to reach your destination in any remotely reasonable amount of time. If you are in a hurry, the ice car still has the edge and will save an hour, but for 95% of most people's driving, what's not to love about charging at home over night as needed. Time saved over pumping gas right there

She's obviously of the crew who thinks that, *her own electric vehicle (in her own mind, at least) is "emissions-free", as long as SHE'S far removed from the emissions happening at (overwhelmingly likely) the either coal or natural gas-fired electric power plant, which allows her to recharge her vehicle every single time she plugs her car in*. She's only going through her phony "virtue signaling" shtick because she wants to sound "caring and cool" and to "fit in" with all of her equally clueless friends, as well as to sway an easily brainwashed public which obviously includes you as well. As in the "South Park" episode referenced earlier in this comment thread, I'll bet that the both of you think that the most pleasant odor on earth is the smell of your own self-righteous and self aggrandizing farts.

    $150,000 and you have to wait 2 hours to charge? Not practical and not fun driving without engine roaring. I'll rather get a Porsche Cayenne Turbo for that price or get a Porsche E Hybrid. Hybrid is the way to go with no worries. Besides, electric is not pollution free since power plants need to burn coal. The interior feels like a Ford rather than an Audi.

    The reason it says 2 hours to charge was because she didn't leave her home with a full charge to start her trip. Also she most likely did not need even need to charge to 100% to make it to the next Supercharger.Most people that own a tesla, usally always leave home with a full charge Since the car should be plugged into their home during the night while they were sleeping. When you go on your trip, each Tesla Supercharger station should only take about 20 mins to complete enough charge to get you to the next Supercharger. I have been on many trips with my Tesla 85D and when you plug into the Supercharger the message pop up on the screen will let you know how much energy you will need in order to get you to the next Supercharger.

      +#Dangerous It usually takes about an hour, but she was probably sharing the stall with another Tesla car, hence the two hour time frame. Maybe, she was the second car to plug in, as a result, was receiving 30 kW from the Supercharger, instead of 90 kW or 120 kW.

    • @UTUBESUCK666

      That's pure bullshit. She share the charger with another car, which DOUBLE the charge time AND she charges to 100%, witch is bad for the battery and NO ONE does that. People charge enough to reach the next charging station, with a few miles to spare just in case. Typical scenario is 20 to 40 minutes MAX. More than enough to go to the bathroom and order a burger. After that 3 hours long drive, you know you'll want that 20-30 minutes break...

    Reasons to buy a Tesla: No maintenance, no trip to gas station, technology, show off wings.
    Reasons not to buy a Tesla: Worry of running out of juice, long time to charge, places to charge, inferior crash test results, Model X's ugliness
    Saw a few Model S and X, definitely go with Model S. S looks like a luxury car. X looks cheaper than a Mazda. I would never get such an ugly suv unless I don't care about style. You have to keep the wings open to get people notice. Get a Porsche E Hybrid instead. You can use all electric for short distance and gas for long distance without any worries.

    I expect this was more about filming than it was about "living with the car" for 5 days as the title suggests.
    Living with the car becomes about your destinations..not about the car itself. The car is just a vehicle to get you where you are going and that's how it should really be treated in any videos about it's actual use.
    I would have loved to see more of her learning how to charge it.. and when. These subtle shifts are key. One has to wrap their mind around the idea of charging the car when you aren't using it.. rather than fueling one while you are using it.

    where do you think electricity comes from

    • @dwayned.5238
      @dwayned.5238 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Super chargers are solar powered. Not sure what happens at night - probably wind+solar carbon offsets - but over the next little bit they'll be using powerwall tech to store sunlight for night use.
      Even if the electricity comes from coal, a Tesla performance model gets about 37mpg(e). When you compare that to equivalent autos that can perform as quickly it's both way more efficient and holds a lot more people an items.

    • @ariip
      @ariip 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some electricity comes from fossil fuel but some does not, and as time progresses then can get more and more from alternative sources. Then the cars will already be able to use the electricity. BUT HERE IS THE MAIN POINT: They have explained time and time again and you have clearly missed this information or have not paid attention. Yet you still choose to comment about something which you are ignorant to. Even if electricity is generated by fossil fuel means, the efficiency of doing so still yields 1/4 to 1/5 of the pollution as compared to generating the energy by the gas engine in the fossil fuel cars themselves. In other words the electric generation plant is that much more efficient in generating the electricity for the car then the generation of energy in the cars own gas engine used to propel itself.

    • @Prositon1
      @Prositon1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it is accurate. It is the "maximum possible power deliverable by the powertrain" Or combined system power in this case is a usual figure. All car makers (that I know of) put there HP figures like that. And the important thing is that the HP and NM figures in petrol powered cars are only reached for a fraction of a second in at an ideal rev. So the horsepower of a Porsche for example is a theoretical figure that the engine could produce at a certain rev. under ideal conditions. So not what is getting to the wheels through a gearbox etc. but what the engine could put out.
