  • Indonesia is the world’s largest island country, covering an area of roughly 1.9 million square kilometers. It’s made up of more than 17,000 islands, running right along the Ring of Fire, an area around the Pacific Ocean that is home to 75% of all active volcanoes on the planet. With a population of 278 million, it’s the fourth most populated country in the world.
Today we’re heading to Jakarta, the country’s capital, which is located on Indonesia’s most populated island, Java, to check out their brand new high speed train, the only one in Southeast Asia and the fastest in the southern hemisphere.
I'm Andy Boreham, and this is a special episode of Reports on China!

@@fannyalbi9040 Our president said "don't look at the profits but look at the benefits for people", the development of Indonesia is still centralized in Java and 56% of Indonesia's GDP comes from this island itself. So that's why we need this project to make the other islands more developed, same reason why our capital city should moved to east Kalimantan

For real the concept and execution of actually creating underground subway train in not only one state like New York but multiple states like Illinois, Washington D.C. and California show that the US can make subway train with determination. I seriously believe the US could create an underground subway train from California to Vermont. I understand it would take decades but man this country can do it. I actually believe underground travel will become more necessary in the future if temperature keeps rising.
Infrastructure will gradually degrade in high heat temperature which the whole world is experiencing right now. I actually believe this is the time when civilizations invest in underground mode of transportation and also one that could handle flooding. The US that used to experience 4 seasons is now experiencing more and more tropical seasons one with high temperature months and in various states enormous amount of rainy months. New York when they built their subways never thought about flooding since the storms where not tropical level but here we are in 2023 and moving forward and hurricanes are more prevalent. I think the infrastructure being built today above ground will be tested in the years to come by the changing climate and nature. So, people should really look into creating underground modes of transportation to save themselves from the planet's changing weather, climate, and nature.

LOL...from where you collected all these plethora list of shitty facts? 🤣 Firsty, Japanese is not building Indian HSR , all the construction is being done by Indian companies . Construction started in 2020 due to delay in land acquisition. Nearly 70-80 Km of viaduct already been constructed . Now in comparison Indonesian HSR is only 140 Km with only 40-50 km of viaduct while Indian HSR is nearly 550 km . If you are really not dumb , than you could easily calculate that if it took Indonesia 6 years to build 140 km of HSR that too chinese firm are doing all construction , how much time it would have taken to build 500 Km? Secondly , 3 times original budget? 🤣🤣 that means 50 Billion dollars.Better to live without brain than collect and write these shitty facts. I know there are delay and cost escalation in Indian HSR(not 3 times as you mentioned) but it also happened in Indonesian HSR and also happens in all other places which are implementing these projects for first time.

@@tmsgaming3986 Trains here run mostly between suburbs during the day while interstate trains are overnight. During the high heat of our summer months, the railway tracks often buckle and it becomes unsafe for trains to travel at speeds above 50kph and sometimes, they have to cancel journeys when the buckling gets too bad. Modern steel rails do not buckle as much but our rails are many decades old.
Interstate train travel between Melbourne and Sydney, tow of the largest cities here, takes about 11 - 12 hours to cover around 865 kilometers. Night travel is probably the most comfortable as the night train leaves around 7pm - 8pm and arrives at around 9am - 10am the next day. Slow, for sure but sort of cheaper than flying (unless there is an air far price war and then, the flight tickets can become ridiculously cheap and people would prefer flying). However, in schools, extra languages are taught, usually local languages, Arabic, Chinese, English and others. The reason for the abolition of this race-specific school is that it is not in accordance with the State's principle of "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika". We Indonesians can usually use 2-3 different languages. Get your facts right and stop whitewashing Indonesia's dark past. Nobody ever doubts that Sukarno holds the principles of both Bhinneka Tunggal Ika and "berbahasa satu, Bahasa Indonesia" dear in his heart. Yet he as the founding father of Indonesia never saw Chinese schools as a problem. Chinese schools were free to operate during his era. My mom (a friend to that Chinatown shopowner you see in the video) was an alumna of Hua Chung and Tsin Hua up until 1965 when US-backed coup leader Suharto announced the closing of Chinese schools and made speaking Chinese in public a criminal act.
Suharto's banning Chinese from being taught in schools and used in public was to eliminate China's soft power in Indonesia, which back in 1965 had the third largest communist party after China and USSR. All that nonsense you say about national unity is just an excuse to cut off people-to-people relations between Indonesia and China. Suharto era also deleted all traces of Chinese contributions from history education taught in schools, including the role Indonesian Chinese has played in the struggle for Indonesia's independence from Netherlands and Japan.
Indonesia from 1966 to 1998 was a right wing fascistic military dictatorship controlled by the US. It's absurd to try to defend any policy created back then as something good.
Malaysians today speak English and Chinese far better than Indonesians in general. It makes the work force from Malaysia worth more than their Indonesian counterpart and easier for them to find jobs globally. Especially in China where the fastest progress in science and technology is happening. Indonesian workers have a much more limited options simply due to their general lack of skills in Chinese and miss out on all that.
Another advantage Malaysians have is since they're fluent in written Chinese, they don't only rely on news written in Malay and English. Hence Malaysians can more easily see through western lies about the world and understand enemies of the West like China and Russia better.
Compare that to Indonesians who mostly can only read Indonesian and some English. The only news they can consume are all translated from CNN, BBC, MSNBC and other western propaganda outlets. It's no surprise Indonesians generally have a very distorted view about China and the world in general. Their irrational suspicion and fear of China generally stems from them only seeing the world through western lenses.
But I hope things gradually change for the better as I see more and more public schools and even pesantren now has Chinese as part of their curriculum.

Hi Andy.. thank you for this great video on the HSR.. relations between the islands of Indonesia and China actually were way before the 13th century, as you mentioned... Chinese literature has noted the use of spices from Indonesia as way back as the 4th century for the use of Chinese traditional medicine. So, perhaps there is a parallel similarity between the maritime Silk Road from China to Indonesia, of the Spice Route from Indonesia to China.

In our country, every tribe has its own language and writing, but we still uphold the Indonesian language because our country's motto is "different but still one". There is a proverb in our country "dimana bumi di pijak di situ langit di junjung" meaning wherever we are we have to follow the existing rules. as well as Chinese immigrants who come to Indonesia. Try to imagine that our country doesn't have rules like this. Chinese minority children have been learning Indonesian from kindergarten yet you think it's not enough and you still need to ban them from writing their Chinatown gate in Chinese characters? Your attitude reflects a widely shared intolerance amongst Indonesians towards anything Chinese. Even today.
Yet funnily enough Indonesians never have any problem with anything related to Japan despite the fact that they DID kill and rape a lot of Indonesian civilians during their 3.5 years of invading Indonesia. How absurd is that?

Now here we are with more than 1300 tribes and 700 languages in Indonesia, but when we met each other, we communicated in the Indonesian language. @ferryrustandi944 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

China has built tens of thousands of kilometers of high-speed railway over vast area and diferrent terrains. The Jakarta-Bandung high speed railway is just 140 kilometers. Without belittling the difficulties of building the railway over volcanic soil as described by Mr. Guo, surely building the Jakarta-Bandung high speed railway wouldn’t pose an overly difficult challenge to China. But in reality it took more than 3 years for it to be operational. I’m afraid it is much more than technical difficulties that will be the challenge for the realization of future high speed railway in Indonesia. It is the attitude of the Indonesian government and people towards Chinese government and Chinese people that will be the real obstacle to future high-speed railway projects. As described in the video, and candidly by the Tian Long store owner, relationship between China and Indonesia has often been testy, difficult, turbulent and even violent. It still remains so today. With the coming Indonesian general election, the future of the relationship and hence the realization of future high-speed railway projects remain uncertain.
