    The SKS is truly a fascinating rifle seeing as it spent most of its life as surplus, export, or for reservists, never seeing much use in it's home nation. I wonder what a SKS M could've looked like had the AK never existed. Perhaps even a whole weapon family like what the AK grew into with the krinkov and the RPK

    I bought my Chinese one for $110 back in the early 1990's. It's a great rifle. It was always overshadowed by the AK, but you are correct that you really can't compare the two. The SKS is from an earlier era and worked exactly as designed. It was a self loading carbine and an excellent one. I always tell people, don't expect this to be an AK. If you want an AK, buy one.

Then I bought two more in 94 a 1953 and a 1955 Russian for $129 each Then a bought an Chinese SKSm that has a 16.5" barrel and takes AK mags for $239. They are still my favorite rifles. Those were the good old days. I prefer them to the AK's.

      Stuck right in between the Mosin and the Kalashnikov, the SKS is often overlooked. In away its unique because there are not many self-loading (semi-only) military rifles, that are chambered for a true intermediate caliber cartridge. There's the VZ.52, the Rasheed, andum what else? I guess you could stretch the point to say the L1A1 SLR was both a self-loader and fired an 'intermediate' cartridge but calling 7.62 NATO thatw as more of a paperwork thing than a reality hehe. The French MAS-49 series comes close but 7.5mm was a full power round by most every metric. Likewise, the M1 Carbine while great really fired more of a 'pistol' caliber cartridge than true intermediate. God i just love history.

    By the looks of the Russian SKS types you have shown i had the early one, no stamped parts and no chrome lined barrel but it was a quality piece and it was number matching ( all parts had the same number and it had the star and cycle on the bolt cover) wish I had kept it,i paid 120 dollars for it back in the early 90s very nice gun and in very good condition

    Hey Misha, I was shown a Yugoslavian sks for sale locally with odd markings. Has the 59/66 gas block but rifle grenade spigot has been removed along with the threads. I believe it was refurbished in Bosnia. It has G10 marked on the receiver and the serial number is just on the receiver and doesn’t conform to any yugo serial numbers. The rifle is in like new condition and I mean like brand new. I am wondering if you know anything interesting about this rifle.

    Oh boy you just opened a can of worms for me. Now I'm going to have to go dig out all of my SKS,s I don't even know how many I have but it's more than a dozen. I've never even looked into where they came from .But whenever I would see one a little different from what I had and it was cheap, I would buy it. I've given away several just because they needed something to shoot and I didn't have much in it. I'm curious to what all I've got now. I have many with different features than you have explained. Different lengths and hand guards ECT. They sure have gone up in price at the gun shows. Crazy. I've always thought they were underappreciated. They always work..not terrible for accurate. Cheap ammo at one time.just can't go wrong owning one or 20.

  • @donjohnson5172

    @Mishaco,
    Do you know If the Chinese ever made standard SKS rifles for commercial export only? I'm looking at a model that uses the standard 10rd swinging box mag, but there's a D at the end of the serial number. It's a 7 digit serial on the receiver and 5 everywhere else. The first two numbers on the receiver are 1 and 2. The D is at the end of the serial number and it doesn't appear to have been added after the fact.
    The gun doesn't appear to be put together sloppily and the seller removed the stock to show me that it uses a screw in barrel. No lightening cut on the bolt carrier. All numbers match except the 10 rd box. Some buffoon removed it long ago so they could struggle with shitty duckbill mags. The current owner found a surplus 10 rd swinging box to get it back to its former glory. There are numbers on the receiver, the stock, the trigger guard and bolt carrier.
    I just wanna make sure this isn't a commercial gun before buying it.

    I know I'm biased but for me YUGO sks looks the best i know because when I was 6 years old yugoslavian army were here in forest two hundred meters away from our home and us kids where there all the time because(three of us) they where alone about 10 soldiers who served mandatory and where old between 18 and 25 they build some underground bunkers and when they where alone they lett us in One wooden barack and show us how to clean sks and whenever they go to a local bar we guard the place with sks rifle of course with out ammo but it was still awesome and something like that would be impossible today(this was a coal colony housing and everyone who lived here had a vegetable garden) and we stole the vegetable from neighbor's garden (back then everyone had a vegetable garden)we gave them onions and tomatoes and other veggies and they give us caned food hehehehe 👍 great memories this was in mid 80s in yugoslavia and ever since then sks is special to me

    • @misha5670
      @misha5670 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm afraid I'm not anything like an expert on the M21. That seems to be a designation/name/serial prefix China put on SKSs bound for export. Originally, M21s were made in the '60s and went to such fun places as Vietnam. I think these were often devoid of many marks/words. Then in the '80s, you had M21s made for the USA or other customers, and these have a great reputation for quality. I guess I kind of think of them as the 'Polytech of tch SKS world". Of course the M21 is still just a Type 56, just given a different name because it was intended for a different customer. Sorry I am not much help here.

    Yugoslavia stopped production of the M59/66 in 1970? Could have sworn every source I've researched puts the production stop somewhere around 89. I know mine is most likely a 1972 based on serial, night sight, and porting on the spigot. '72 was the final year the grenade spigot had porting on the end.
