part of why the leather was an issue was bc brunel decided to leave out the weather flaps which allowed the leather to have water permeate causing the issues with freezing temperatures.
Another issue were rats who would get attracted by the smell of the lubricant, in part consisting of beeswax and dying in the vacuum tube, to be crushed by the piston.

This is he larger diameter pipe that was replaced by a narrower one to reduce the need for pumping effort and cost of fuel used. The leather problem was solved by using vulcanised rubber however the SDR directors were not prepared to spend more money and by that time locomotives were powerful enough to tackle the Dainton Bank. One problem was rats being sucked into the pipe as well as other materials!!

@@michaelturner7949 I was brought up in Teignmouth and I used to walk to school passing a narrow atmospheric pipe in use as a drain. I went looking for it and it's now under the tarmac layers!

This is precisely the same design of the steam catapults used on aircraft carriers for launching planes, at least until the current mag-rail system came into service.

Yes well today with modern PVC and other forms of flexible materials, I am sure this system would work fine. Leather was prone to degradation, and the local rats loved it to bits. Try try try again.

No, look at ThunderfOot. He debunked this numerous times. Snakeoil.

The world's first hyperloop. First test run today, but technology is 170 years old!

Using a vacuum, a pipe, a train, and total failure........ Hmmm... Hyperloop anyone?
