      Why the hell would you take a train when you can fly? I guess the rest of the world is mesmerized by the romantic clickety-clack of trains while we just hop on a jet that goes 3 times the speed of the fastest train. I once flew from NYC to Pittsburgh. Sure I could just drive it in 8 hours, or if we had one of these high speed trains I could get there in 3 hours, but jumping on a commuter jet took 45 minutes (about 1:15 gate to gate) and cost about $110. LOL like I would ever consider a train after that. Well if I were mentally retarded I probably would. Actually, no, not even our special olympians would choose to travel by train over plane.

    • @ElmerCat
      @ElmerCat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      In other parts of the world, intercity passenger rail technology is a far cry from the coal-fired "choo-choo" trains you're imagining. Of course, Amtrak is ridiculous - well, it's really a national disgrace - but, as you can see from videos of systems in Europe and Asia, high-speed passenger trains can be very fast, comfortable, convenient, and practical.

    • @rosco0101
      @rosco0101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      1. Modern trains don't go 'clickety-clack. 2. When you factor in the extra time necessary to go through security theater, perhaps check luggage, wait for boarding and taxiing, and reclaim your luggage on the other end, a journey like NYC to Pittsburgh would actually be faster on a train. 3. Rail stations are also centrally located so there is no time wasted traveling to and from the airport. 4. Trains are generally more spacious than planes and you can enjoy the view during the journey, or visit the bar or dining car. 5. Trains are a lot less polluting than planes.
      Given the choice I would take a train over a plane even if the journey took a little longer, there is just so much less hassle involved.

      Exactly why the U.S. is behind in terms of high speed rail. NYC to Pittsburgh is 370 miles, and if you take the Amtrak, it takes 10 hours and $113. In China, if you want to go between Beijing and Shanghai, that's 819 miles, and it takes $86 and 4 hours to get there by bullet train versus $140+ to go through security and go by plane.

      For the record, in a documentary,... it told Chinese manual labour was used to build USA Western side rail link (US West & East rail to join) at the height, maximum rate of laying is 7km rail track in a day! (doing 24hrs / 7 days a week, rotating shift)
      And that was all done manually! again 7km a day...
      This was the famous race between the West (rich tycoon) and on the USA Eastern (a retired army general?) leading the locals to build...
      The West & East rail building race was on,
      West side was extremely difficult initially through steep mountainsm cliffs... many Chinese labour died (upto 1/4? to 1/2? at sometime)..., there was labour on strike too due to condition and pay etc... once the mountain was through, the rate of speed pick up to full steam ahead...
      The local was already near half way mark when the Western link was still stuck in the mountains unable to progress...
      Long story short the import (Chinese) labour with Tycoon throwing lots of $ in (for the win & honour!) reach the central meeting point before the "retired Army general" by a week?... Not sure exact details now but win by quite a margin...
      It was an interesting documentary to watch.

    The Chinese have been building railroads for a long, long time. 150 years ago, they labored to built the first trans-continental railroad across North America. Then, fifty-or-so years ago, the U.S foolishly discarded its rail infrastructure, while China (and Europe) forged ahead to achieve superior technology. Here in Boston, new Chinese subway trains are going into service this year. As an American, I feel bad they weren't designed and entirely built here. But as a pragmatist (and optimist), I'm looking forward to the new Chinese trains as major improvement from what we have now!

      Big oil money stopped the development of railroads. You can look it up. Rail was dismantled to make way for the automobile. And the ones driving the development the automobile made sure rail had no future.
      And hence, the US is where it is at today. A country that allows interests to take over longterm investments for the benefit of the people is a failed country. The US is indeed a failed country with a failed system. It may not be obvious today, but if things stay the way it is, it'll be obvious 50-100 years from now.

After many FOI requests the obtuse answers that came back where; the gauge is standard for these trains, tunnels large enough to suit these trains etc. Theft from the highest levels of government here in New South Wales, Australia. And now they plan to close and re-gauge an existing line built and paid for by the people of NSW the EPPING to Chatswood rail line to the lessor gauge. What the hell?

The govt just putting and wasting more money on something extremely outdated here. No one want to take any risks on improvement. Typical govt just give more and more money for votes and causes inflation sky rocket these days. These stupid actions spoil lazy pigs more and disappoint people who have true ability and courage. People in Europe and Japan are probably watching this and thinking: what's so special about this? But then, they realise they don't have this in the rest of the world.
    But, one thing the Chinese don't have is a good railroad working song. The Americans sing "I've been working on the railroad", the South-Africans sing "Shozoloza" that even made into an unofficial anthem. Come on, workers of China! Compose a working song!

    • @fungames24
      @fungames24 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You will notice the chinese work crew is rather small and 500 meters apart. It would be difficult to get a song going.
      One inefficiency I can see is one of the men using an adjustable wrench. A cheap made in china ratchet and socket would have been much better.

    • @YaoiMastah
      @YaoiMastah 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Internationale is hardly a working song, isn't it? The rythm is too slow paced, and it doesn't leave well for call and response, like the American gandy dancers (railroad workers) songs and chants.
      But the lyrics of the Internationale would lend itself to something like this:
      Work hard today-
      This rail leads to-
      A bright future-
      Away from hunger-
      Away from oppression-
      Towards prosperity comrades-
      As there are Chinese equivalents of work songs (PLA marching songs for instance, or the Yangtze boat trackers songs), I'm fairly certain one could compose something.
