  • One of the cows with a bad udder, and her calf are sent to auction. Not a great day, but a lesson learned.

    Really appreciate what you are doing. Been thinking about moving into raising Dexters. Have 22 acres here in SE NC with about 5 cleared acres and some small paddocks etc. just had a barn/shop/man cave fire so looking to start fresh. Thank you sir!

    Also there are guys that buy the single calf's and put a set together and they get 20-50 cents more a pound for the very same weight calf's selling them in pen lots ..

      Hey Stark. These girls wouldn’t be the Dexters you would want to start a herd with. Maybe some decent beef, but that’s it. Hope all is well with you. Good luck on your move!

    Love your videos. Very informative watching your journey. Wish you were closer if you were looking to replace the girls you sold. I got a beautiful red heifer here when she’s weaned I’m in north central Illinois

    Dad and myself had cows for 25 plus years true dexters and small frame cows bring less per pound at a sale but you are selling beef at the sale my suggestion is to get your caves to 300 350lbs fast and sell them the longer you keep them the less profit you have

      Yeah. I wasn’t to impressed with the daughter but I probably did act to quickly. Definitely wasn’t a good decision money wise. We reserve the right to get smarter lol. Thanks Carl

  • @ruth9396

    Never take Dexters to a sale barn. You get way more money by beefing them out yourself. People don't understand the quality of beef they will get from the Dexter cow, therefore the price is low. Maybe once we get the word out about the beef, they will start bringing better prices. Keep up the great videos and work!

    I finally had a chance to watch these, my experiences in dairy land do not match your thinking. Have seen little to no correlation from how a mothers bag is to the calf, also have had a bunch of 3 teaters that produced just as good or better than some with 4 and had fantastic calves, as cows age and calve, bags usually drop and diameter increases, it is not unusual. With all that said, it is a item to watch and must be culled out because appearance especially in your case, but I think I would have got a date at the butcher and calved that cow out and maybe made 2 dates and took them both depending on how the calf you sold looked. Sure wish someone would do that here, that was a good buy.

    • @dexterranch
      @dexterranch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi TP. From a functionality standpoint you are 100% correct, but from a registered breeder stand point these kinds of things make the calf unmarketable for anything but beef. I will always have animals that will have to go to beef, but my goal is to have most being sold to potential buyers for a premium, and people look at these things. It becomes a bad stain on the farm. If I was focused on just dairy or beef, then what I’m doing would make no sense. I always appreciate your comments cuz you speak your mind. Thank you for that. Hope all is well.

      Dexter Ranch isn’t it more profitable to sell cattle for beef ....ideal to market that beef by yourself, then try to sell them as Premium Breeding Cows or Bulls ? It seem to me that Those Auction Barns are not a good way to market cattle ....maybe for big Angus Producers but not for the small ones with dexters.

  • @Tr0thSpeak
    @Tr0thSpeak 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Off topic i apologize. Why does every one take them to a butcher instead of butchering them themselves? Is it a health thing, easier sale , legal requirement, etc? I noticed most everyone does it that way but it would seem much more profitable to do yourself. Honest question! Love your channel

    • @dexterranch
      @dexterranch  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. I think it definitely has to do with easier sale, and in most cases or states I think it’s the only legal way to sale. Most customers will want a usda label on their beef. Also I think it’s a bit of a trade to process them correctly. I think. I’ve never tried lol, but your right it would be much more profitable if you could take that cost out.

      Hi. So these auction houses do not care about conformation or if the animal is registered or even what breed of cattle they are. They are buying and selling for beef only, so no her udder conformation was not spoke about with auction house. Hope I answered your question. Thanks for watching!

      Dexter Ranch Is there no opportunity in the US to sell them on private Base via Internet to get more out of it ? Here in Germany ist’s called „eBay Kleinanzeigen“
      By the way, nice Content 👍🏼...keep it up

    • @dexterranch
      @dexterranch  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Stefan! You are right. There are more opportunities to do better. This was kind of worst case scenario. The cow was way past her prime, and would have been hard to market in the private sales, and would have only been good for hamburger in beef. I wanted to see what the auction would bring out of curiosity, and I figured since she was pregnant they would let her and her heifer calf stay together. Definitely won’t be doing this again if I can keep from it. Hope all is well in Germany!

      Dexter Ranch So far everything is good in Germany, apart from the fact that our democracy is eroding and the population is divided as seldom before. 😉 .... but our Dextern are doing very well, we had a very damp year for our circumstances. lots of grass and lots of hay. We recently bought our first bull calf and want to start breeding and selling the beef. So far we had 2 heifers for our own use only.
