      I had a neighbor who had a precious "Cavashe" [cavalier king Charles mixed with a bichon frishe]. She was a darling girl, and she was best friends with my Toy poodle. They would visit at each other's house and yard. They'd have sleep-overs, and we're very best friends from the moment they met!
      When she just turned 6 years old, the poor darling passed away from congestive heart failure. My little girl was so sad to not see her good friend anymore! I cried for weeks, myself! It was a terribly sad situation to see that darling fur baby die at such a young age. Obviously, she came from a really poor breeder! 😞

It was a miracle. She was allergic to everything and could only eat one type of food (and the occasional piece of a cooked chestnut a few times a year, those were her favourite, when she saw you peeling them she went hyper and barked all over the place 🥹🌰🐶❤ She died of a brain tumour (we put her down because she couldn’t do anything anymore and we didn’t want to torture her), she also had heart problems and everything else you’ve mentioned, but I hope we took care of her well and that she was happy with us as we were the most blessed with her. I still miss her every day ❤

    What a well-tempered doggo. I have a terribly neurotic 13 year old Dachshund who, after all these years, has not changed her temperament. We rescued her from a shop window in Spain. I think she was never socialized. She only feels safe in the house and garden. She also lost 3 of her mates since Corona, all of them bonkers doggos. Watch what you get but also, don't give up on weird dogs.

    • @Czadzikable
      @Czadzikable ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It is understandable that you feel like you rescued your individual dog. But the reality is that buying a dog from a shop window almost certainly supports puppy mills. So perhaps in the future, do try to actually rescue a dog from a shelter /rescue charity, in order to avoid unwittingly supporting puppy mills, as when people buy them from shops it just creates further demand for the puppies from puppy mills, so they then breed more...

      Buying from a shop isn’t always a case of promotion. My husband rescued our cavalier who was being returned for having a lazy eye. He was almost assuredly headed for destruction. He only made it to 4.5 but at least it wasn’t simply because of his looks.

    I have a Cav mix from the pound, and can attest that their feet get verrrrry grinchy. Which poses a problem when playing in the snow. I’m rather glad mine is a mix because of their known heart problems and tendency to hip dysplasia. My cousin has had Cavs for years and been pretty lucky that all of hers have been healthy and relatively long-lived. It does seem like some part of the breeder community has taken the heart disease issue seriously and is working to test any dogs their are breeding to try a had remedy the common genetic defects. 😢

    • @Silverhaired59
      @Silverhaired59 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It is the syringemelia that scares me from getting a Cavalier. With their rounded heads, they have more brain tissue than what fits in their skull, and this causes a lot of pain. When an apple-headed dog starts “scratching at the air” near its head, it is a sign that they have it. It affects the nerves and is very painful. Then there is another disorder that Cavaliers get where they just suddenly freeze and fall over stiff. They remain unconscious for a few seconds, then get up again. This happens most often when they are running. I once was close to getting a Cav from a rescue. I was one of the two or three adopters that were still in the running. I pulled out after reading about all these problems. Not because I did not want to deal with the possibility of having vet bills. I did not mind that. Instead, I did not want to encourage the continued breeding of the Cavs. Even getting one from a rescue would influence the “market” for them, I figured.
      With Dalmatians, who were getting a kidney stone disease in high numbers, one breeder in the 1970s crossed a pointer with his Dal and got a dog without the kidney disease. Then he just kept breeding dogs without the disease with that dog’s offspring until h.e had a line of Dals that were indistinguishable from full Dals. The AKC okayed regist,wring his healthy line of dogs as full breed Dalmatians, but the breed club (Dal breeders and owners belonging to the AKC) refused to let them register them for over 20 years! Now, you can buy a Dal from the line where they out-bred to that pointer and register it. They could do the same with CKCS if they wanted to. They could spend decades getting the three or four major health problems out of the breed, but then have healthy, happy little dogs.

      @@GMarie. Some Norwegian breeders claimed to be outbreeding the Cavs and the bulldogs but most were still breeding both breeds right to the KC's breed standard which meant unhealthy suffering dogs.
      TBH both breeds are close to unsalvageable. They are so inbred it is hard to so any point in trying to breed them at all. There are other small companion breeds without all the health problems of the cav and there are many closely related breeds to the bulldog that can be selectively bred to recover a breed that looks like the ancestral bulldog, essentially a more muscular boxer. But how many cav mixes should be condemned to suffer because they inherit the too small skull of the cavs, it causes ~70% of cavs varying degrees of discomfort, pain, neurological symptoms up to and including eventual paralysis, in order to breed a healthy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel again?

    My family's first Cavalier was rescued from a puppy mill, and she passed from heart failure at only 10 years old, but she was such a sweetheart that many of our friends and relatives fell in love with her and ended up getting Cavaliers of their own. As for us, we made sure to get our second Cavalier from a reputable breeder, and he just turned 7 a few days ago, and he's still in good health, so hopefully he'll live a long happy life with us.

    I lost my baby girl (King Charles cavalier) Lola in June to anorexia brought on by Chronic Heart Failure. She was 11 years had an heart murmur from the age of 7 years old, but was fine on vetmedin for years. She started coughing but her heart murmur hadn’t really changed (she was 2 out of 4 or 3 out of 6 depending on which vet she saw).
    In the last 6 months she was undergoing tests because the Vets thought she had cushings disease, but in May (less than a month before she died) they said her heart murmur was really bad & we started her on water tablets.
    She became poorly quite quickly & wouldn’t eat (she’s always loved food). I tried everything to try to get her to eat, hand feeding, syringe feeding, anti sickness tablets, appetite stimulants, all of her favourite foods, vet food, she was at the vets every other day. She was 9 kg to start with but lost nearly 3 kg in a matter of days. They wanted to put a tube in her stomach & feed her up (she would be in hospital whilst the tube was in), but a different vet said that they could do that but it was only a temporary measure & she would probably go downhill again within days.
    Apparently some dogs can become anorexic because of heart failure.
    She was already on the highest vetmedin, water tablets & pain relief but nothing was helping.
    When she started falling over even whilst sitting that’s when i decided (with the vet) she’d been through too much & I had to let her go. All this happened in the space of less than two weeks.
    I’m crying even typing this, I miss my little angel so much.
    Sorry for the long comment but, i can’t believe how fast she went down hill. I honestly wish I had done more research into Cavaliers but then I might not have had my Lola & I don’t regret having my little fluff ball in my life (I hate that she was so poorly at the end).

      It is always caused by unscrupulous breeding. More than sensible numbers of litters of less than carefully paired dogs. Then throw in some friends putting their dogs together to help fill demand and suddenly all these inherited issues come screaming. It happens to every 'popular' breed. I noticed that about 10 years ago, the local beagles all had a soft coat as they were being bred for the pet market. This ruins the breed. There are so many 'cavoodles' here in Australia right now, I'd say 10 Cavoodles to 3 poodles and 1 pure cav. All these 'oodles' are pure puppy farmed. The breeders don't care but for the $$$$$

I wasn't so scared but when my neighbour's dreadfully mistreated and neglected and beaten GS jumped the fence into our yard and attacked me, (requiring many stitches which never closed the wound properly due to infection), no one was terribly surprised, and the owner didn't have to do anything, she wasn't put down, she was still allowed to breed!
