2016 Range Rover HSE Td6 Review

  • I review the 2016 Range Rover HSE Td6 (diesel) on and off-road. Is this still an off-road king or is it a pavement queen? I put nearly 500 miles on this beauty in seven days and never had to fill the tank. The fuel economy is impressive, which adds the luxury of not having to fuel up all that often. But is it worth $103k+? Let's go over the details and find out.

    2019, only worth half the price with 21k miles. Time to buy!

    Very informative and professional review Bryan,and please don't berate yourself on the size issue re the seats,we British have become more than a match for you in that department.And as for your rhetorical question at the conclusion " do we really need it ",over here the answer is a definite yes,as our roads are now in a shocking state of disrepair.In fact in a few years time unless something is done all vehicles sold here will HAVE to be ' off roaders'.But it is a wonderful vehicle isn't it,you just need a degree in electronics and information technology to operate it,i'm to old for that.

    Good job I enjoyed this review. Most just hurry up and run threw but you took your time.. the cool part is RR get 28 MTG high way and has a 23.5G and gets 658miles on a full tank.. I wish I could afford a RR

    Thanks for the review, I was worried about the feasibility of the diesel model - I’m about to purchase a 2020 full size range with the diesel

    I'm surprised you guys don't get the V8 Diesel (SDV8) over there like we do in the UK. Pretty much all RR sales have the diesel and our new 2016 Sport is the same engine as this one, the 3.0. It's a brilliant engine, so refined and effortless power. I don't like diesels much but it's brilliant!

      BoschExxcel I'm surprised we are even getting this.. I don't know what America has a problem with change but let's hope we get more of them.. But after the whole vw thing that just set us back 5-10 years on diesel I wish we had more choices... I love the new diesel

      Unfortunately, America Has the scars of the Volkswagen diesel scandal. I just bought an L405 with the TD6. I love it. I am only three weeks into it and have put about 500 miles on it and only a half a tank! I guess technically it is a full tank because I took it down to a half a tank and filled it back up and I’m back at half a tank. I wish we could get the TDV8. That sounds like a beast of an engine. This is the first six-cylinder I have had since 1994. I am old enough now, that I don’t necessarily need the monster acceleration. in Joe Biden’s handler’s world, I would rather have The fuel economy. I still have my L322 and if I am niggardly with the skinny pedal I can touch 20. With this I can drive normally And touch 30+ on the highway. I love it!

    Brilliant review! But as you said that this is the only luxury diesel SUV you were wrong, there is one contender here. It's the Mercedes GLS350d, it's got the same beautiful, upright exterior.

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +RB26DETT Thank you. Mercedes has pulled diesels from the US market. When I made this video in March 2016, Range Rover was the only diesel SUV. Even BMW pulled the X5 for a re-certification.

      Diesel Review When will Mercedes release back their oil burner in the US? Sad to hear that, and Audi won't release theirs any time soon.

    Nice review.
    FYI: There are still large portions of the old Route 66 through Texas that were never paved, by the way. I've been down them in my Mustang, and boy were they painful. That RR would have been amazing on those stretches.

    Time for car shopping, would anyone here recommend this diesel (2016) at 80k miles over a newer ford explorer (2018) sport trim at 3k-40k miles but the same price? I know, used car price has increased a lot due to covid. I love RR but my mind keeps saying that the Explorer is a safer bet and looks like Explorer has more newer tech as well.

    Jaguar/Land Rover only allowed you to put 500miles on the vehicle because they are super unreliable. Something always breaks on a Land Rover.

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +CEEPMDEE I think it has more to do with depreciation and the fact that these cars are usually crushed after 10k miles because they are pre production models.

      I can't believe this still goes on. I have driven LR products for nearly 15 years and replaced one suspension compressor under warranty in all that time. I have never been let down or stranded and find the cars always get me where I'm going. I find the people who complain generally are just jumping on the hearsay bandwagon, they have no personal experience of the marque and just repeat the things they've heard elsewhere. My LR's have been supremely reliable and I wouldn't hesitate buying another. The seat width is fine btw, even for an American sized Brit like me!
      I suggest those who feel the reliability is a problem should read the motor leasing companies stats on the subject. LR came in higher than Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Jeep! Facts speak volumes compared to rhetoric and hearsay.

    If you buy the long wheelbase would it effect the trunk of the car?

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lex Disselkoen I believe the long wheelbase only affects rear seat leg room, which is why the rear doors are longer. If the rear seats fold down in the long version, then you would have more cargo room with the seats folded.

    Mercedes W222 S-class diesel is returning to the states with a new engine inline 6 diesel no engine nomenclature yet, apparently they're going back to I6 gasser and diesel for due to modular design for their mass production engine, V8 are reserved for upper trim and AMG only.
    BMW G11 7 series is coming with a new diesel engine dubbed as B57 no other technical info release yet
    Audi getting new V6 diesel engines, electric supercharger and variable geometry turbocharger, hopefully/most likely will pass through that damned EPA

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +zech007 Thanks for the info. The W222 has been here for a few years already and there's still no diesel variant. They also promised a diesel C-class but we're still waiting. Audi's new diesel will debut in the SQ7 and it will be a V8, yet no official timeline for the US.

      +Mario Dalla Riva I had more fun off than on road. The diesel engine is the most advanced and powerful V6 3.0l turbo I've ever experienced. If rumors of this engine ending up in the Ford F150 are true, Ford will have a nice truck in their lineup. This Range Rover doesn't thrill me, and the Range Rover Sport has the same engine and room for 7 passengers (and a lower price tag as well).

      +Diesel Review I wish there was a database out there that showed every vehicles trips to the shop in real time so we could get an idea if RR is doing any better in the "Problems per vehicle" department. I really want to look into one of these but I'm just too scared to pull the trigger given their past track record. I need something larger than my Macan and wanted to venture out a little instead of going Cayenne. The dated tech is an issue ( to me) too. The newer RR's are very nice though.

    • @EODHammer

      +Diesel Review For whatever reason I don't care for the looks of the Sport, Don't care for the new bodystyle of the Q7 either. I like the previous model's looks but the 2017's are impressive as far as the virtual cockpit and other goodies. My S7 hasn't given me any problems at all. Still loving it! I may take a chance on RR and see how it goes. Europeans love diesels and like you said that's what you see for the most part over there and for very good reason. Great mileage, dependability and drivability.

      +Diesel Review Did you know that Rover will not sell to out of state customers? I just called Gwinett Ga ( they have 3) and they told me that I would have to deal with the Greenville dealership lol! Not that I have a problem with them but the Greenville dealer has no diesels and made sort of a big deal out of trading with Gwinett. WTF? Will see what happens when I get a call back but that's BS. If I hear something negative I'll just wait on the deisel cayenne to start rolling out again.

    • @DieselDrives
      @DieselDrives  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ted Davis Sounds like the GA dealer doesn't want to deal with all that SC $300 sales tax paperwork. There's always Charlotte and Asheville, but what about Charleston?

    They are getting uglier by the year. It peaked at 2009 ish that range rover looked like a G* wagon.
    Now they look girly.
