He ain't in the top 10 , he has always been number 1 above number 1 , he was so amazing , gone way too soon , and what really since I heard MK perform on Bowie tribute album, Ashes to Ashes ( I'll leave the link) Simon N Bell should have given more vocal stage time to him, I swear we would have had a mix of sounds that wasnt all Polaroids and Tin Drum, Sylvian has always been my hero , but who ever saw his last solo tour ,cherish it , he has more unreleased material than The Doors apparently, so that tells me he is too fragile for studio work . But as for Bass, Mark king isn't in the same league as Mick was , for one King in 78 if he was using a Fender Squire Jazz Fret Bass would not have had MKs technique, I respect all the videos on here of great Bass players who aren't trying to copy Mick , they just play along and as good as they are find it challenging, and still are finding the riffs mick made sound so hard , Legend ....RIP , left us way too soon

Mick Karn & a WAL bass... what a pure and beautiful combination ! Mr Karn was a talented bass player, he's on my top 5 list for more than 30 years. No one will beat him creating such beautiful and incredible bass lines ! Thank you so much Mr Karn, we miss you so much.
Let Me tell you all the 80's were a great time to live in if you were into finding new music. With the introduction of the synthesizer bands were able to create sounds no one had heard on a record before and these guys were among the best, just plain different and better than anything else around at the time..happy days indeed
Wonderful to see, lifetime Japan fan, saw them live and bought one of Steve's photos at the photographers gallery. This band was at the top of the tree at the time. Other bands emulated and adored them. Every Japan fan at the time, knew they were on totp that night. Neat, I was 16.
great footage, aint seen before. i had a chat with richard from japan and he shared info on their Oil on canvas live video....the close-up shots of him with a green light shining on him were infact filmed in a studio. his keyboards are hardly lit in the live footage,so it made sense. Met him at a Roland synthesizer convention, nov 2012. lovely guy.
Mick was Japan"s total sound , if , which will never happen , DS , SJ, RB and RS or Rob D ever did a few dates , you'd never hear Japan sound like this if they threw Mark King in for a guest player ,, Mick was way ahead of all the bass players I've ever seen and they say 'wako jacko was the original stage glider , Jay Kay was like watching him on a conveyor belt , mick was like Houdini . RIP mick
One of the most amazing bass line of the 80's, thanks Mick and rest in peace. Absolutely fantastic album (Tin Drum) still playing after all these days.
The rhythm section of this song IS pretty unique. And instead of a guitar solo or synth solo which normally appears in a song, this one features a fantastic drum solo~~~~~~~
Indeed. Been waiting patiently for a new "Blue Nile" album for how long?!! 🤔 Am trying to find as much as I can of David... I just don't know where to begin! Have all Japan, 😊. Only took me 6 years to find a copy of "Gone to Earth" but oh what a day that was...!
There are some articles on David online. There are some TH-cam clips of interviews. There are some Japan and David Sylvian Facebook groups. There are tons of photos of Japan online. Different ones keep surfacing daily.
I'd like to know the brand of those white shoes... I saw Dave Sylvian & his bro Jansen, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor & Roger Taylor wore them in the photos as well as posters......
So that's what ORS stands for! Forgive me: I'm a Manhattanite, and my sojourns in Britain have been tragically brief (mind you, born with the wrong passport as I was, I always intended to stay permanently. And got so very close.) When did this program run; which BBC channel was it on; and how did it differ from TOTP and The Old Grey Whistle Test? Many thanks, anyone, for the edification...
BBC 2. It was a somewhat alternative arts/music show and featured musical guests. Early 80s of course! It catered to a maybe more youthful audience than Old Grey Whistle Test but OGWT was quite hip by the early 80s. It used to be a dire old fogey show of progressive rock crap.. TOTP was pure top 40 stuff playing what was popular in the record charts. TOTP was BBC 1. OGWT and ORS were only on BBC2 so a much smaller audience.
@@heathergeary2724 yes i know but if you look on the various fansites, the drum solo in the ,.last third of the recording was a tape though by all accounts what steve actually played on his kit was fabby and way better

They didnt copy them actually japan and duran duran were both influenced by bowie that's his early look. Duran did mentioned that they were japan fans .They became more popular and sold more records later on japan never made it big in USA .
depecheddurand that's because Duran Duran sold out, Japan didn't. Duran took Japan's music and made it extremely commercial, that's why they were more popular. Not inventive or creative.
Akhnaten Both bands don't need to be pitted against each other all the time. Yes DD had loads of the same influences as Japan and admitted to being inspired by them early on and deliberately aimed to be a accessible/successful band. Nothing wrong with that considering as they were absolutely very creative and inventive with their music. You can hear that clearly, they just weren't as left field & obscure and were often much more celebratory. Happy to enjoy both in similarities, differences and in their own right.
For what? Churning out endless clichéd solo cover version albums like "These Foolish Things"? I bought all his albums. Played them all once only. Whereas Tin Drum I ve played thousands of times as its way more original than appearing on the Cilla Black show or other such boring pre punk mainstream TV. Shocked Bryan would even do those, but he did
There's absolutely nothing Roxy about this or the whole Tin Drum album. By the time of the GTP album they had grown out of their influences and were totally unique.
Well your obviously blind and deaf 😀 Duran Duran could not hold a candle to these guys. Once in a lifetime a group of musicians come together and produce music not meant for this planet. Japan where one of those groups.
The 70's and 80's weren't ready for Japan. Very underrated band, overshadowed by more mainstream bands of the day.
Too gorgeous for words. The music. The band. Gosh. Keyboards were essential. Great drumming. Excellent mix of musicians.
Yes
Steve Jansen had a unique way of drumming. I like his style.

See 'Over Fire Island" and "Skysaw" (ENO)

Mick Karn was spectacular on that fretless bass 🖤

Brilliant bassist, Gail Ann Dorsey is pretty close.. Bowie chose her 😊
How refreshing to see a camera person actually focusing on the drummer for a change!
Yes I agree I feel totally refreshed, in fact so refreshed it's as though one has bathed in a warm bath of refreshing water, refreshed is what I feel.
True. And he should, because this song is all about that great rhythm part :)
Then again... at that point in the song, there wasn't too much of a choice ;)
