    Aloha!
    Voskhod blades are my favorite blades, and I've been wet shaving with DE and Straight Razors for decades. I happen to love them. They are just perfect for my skin. Smooth as silk and a great close shave.
    BTW, it's not pronounced "Vosh-Kahd", it's pronounced Vos-Hod, accent slightly on the Hod. The K is silent and there is no SH in the pronunciation.
    Mahalo!

    Voskhods are Teflon coated so the first a few strokes will not seem as sharp until the Teflon coating wears off a bit , then you will feel the sharpness and smoothness.

    • @J8D2
      @J8D2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What exactly is the purpose of the Teflon coating?

    • @coolstory6193
      @coolstory6193 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@J8D2 I think it’s to make the blade last longer in terms of sharpness and performance. Also the sharpness of the blade won’t be effected as much when using shaving soap. I assume it works the same as Teflon used on cars to help the coating last longer.

    I had written Voskhod off about a year ago because when paired with milder razors like the Merkur 34C or the Edwin Jagger DE89 they seemed comparatively ineffective, however, I just tried them again with my new Futur adjustable. This is where Voskhods really shine because I can crank up the aggressiveness to setting 4 without worry of easily nicking myself. With Personas on setting 4, I have to be really careful. I mean you should always be careful, but the Voskhods are definitely more forgiving while still getting the job done. I'm really glad that I decided to revisit this gems!

    Great review Nick. I was laughing during the video because your experience with Voskhod blades has been mine as well. I've used them about 5 times now and every time on the first pass I'm not impressed and feel like they aren't doing a good job. Then on pass 2 and 3 they just really shine and every time I'm done with the 3rd pass I'm amazed at how well they did. Like I posted on your IG, I don't think I really understood what "smooth" really meant until I tried these. I have coarse hair and really sensitive skin, so I usually have to use really sharp blades. I don't get it either, but these Voskhods just work miracles without "feeling" overly sharp. They may be my go to blade after a few more shaves.

Glad to have found your review chief. Good work fella.

    I love Voskhods. I use them in a mild blue tip Superspeed, and my experience is like yours: At first, I found them feeling not terribly sharp, and wondered how effective they would be. I watched you’re vids when I first started & found this vid by coincidence
    You’re probably an orthodontist by now & don’t have time to read this stuff
    I have a very tuff beard growth & a friend recommended Voskhod. He said “you might think they’re mild but they’re not” - he gave me a sharpness test result as well that he’d done on the blade
    So I tried it with 3 day growth - lo & behold this blade plowed it all down I also used quite an aggressive razor - blade gap .8 - no nicks, no bruises it’s 2020 & I’m still using Voskhod - I consider this perfect for me & like you said “it’s all subjective”

    As far as I know Mostochlegmash which is shortened for , if translated into English, stands for Moscow precise light machinery, fended off a takeover bid from Gillette thus being an independent producer of various shaving things. The company runs a Swedish made production line. By the way, whereas Rapira blades, except for Swedish super steel are widely available, Voskhod's an Ladas' though being produced in Moscow are extremely hard to come by here, you get them only through the internet or some every selected shops, weird. Anyway, great job Nick. Greetings from Moscow.

    I found a decent deal on a 100 pack of these and just tried them out in my Merkur 38C with a Stirling soap. It felt like it was tugging and pulling everywhere on my face and the sensation didn't clear up with subsequent passes. I succeeded in chewing my neck up pretty well and it still left a lot of stubble which I very carefully cleaned up with my Phoenix DOC and a Feather blade without any issue. I'll try the Voskhod again in the Merkur and a few other razors (and perhaps change the soap/cream) but as of right now I've had vastly superior results from Astra platinums in the 38C and Feathers in the Phoenix DOC.

    As always, great video and thoughtful review.
    Voskhod had been one of my go-to blades for a long time.
    With my most recent purchase (about 6 months ago) I noticed a dramatic change.
    I may have just gotten a bad batch or perhaps there has been a change in manufacturing.
    In my opinion they are now far less sharp and comfortable.
    I'll probably give them another shot down the road but for now my Polsilvers and Astras can't be beat!

    Great review as always, Nick! - never stop! Yep the Voskhod is one of my go-to's along with most all of the Rapira range. They are a seriously smooth shave and I think are fairly close to the Personna Lab (for my face at least) - I would give the Personna an edge for sharpness. Rapira brand blades including this one are abundant on Ebay and the price is right. - from Russia with love. Voshkods go well in a 'mad-man razor' like the Merkur Futur. It teams well.
    Another strong point for guys with complex beard patters - it allows you to maneuver the blade a few ways in a pass to catch those errant 'hard to pick up whiskers sans the irritation.

  • @ericketchum4809
    @ericketchum4809 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    As you’ve undoubtedly heard since the video was posted in 2015 these blades are usually sharper on the second shave than the first because of the Teflon coating wearing off the edge. Most of the time I notice the first pass feels dull in comparison to consecutive passes just like you
    experienced. 😊 And some type of coating is mandatory when the blades are carbon steel which is very prone to rust. Before stainless became mainstream many blades were coated in some type of preservative to protect them in storage.
    Thanks for your awesome videos! They’ve been very helpful since I started my wet shave adventures about a year ago.

I used this blade in my Merkur 34C with very acceptable results, but their best performance was realized with my Merkur 39C slant. In fact these are my "go to" blades with that razor. Never thought I would be researching shaving of all things... But my wife got me a DE set for a valentines gift. I naturally did a 3 pass with no knowledge of tips or tricks to DE. I will from this play with lathering techniques. Cant afford to buy any other stuff to try but the wilkinson sword blades I got with the set seem to work.

    The Teflon coating is what makes them especially smooth. The reason some kitchen knives are Teflon coated ( or some have indentations on the side of the blade) is to keep food - perhaps tomato slices - from sticking to the blade, giving you smoother slicing. Think of a nonstick pan, how w/ even a shot of Pam the food can slide and glide. That doesn't happen in a stainless pan.

    Nick, you should try the Treet "Black Beauties" (so called because they are black carbon steel). They are similar to the Voskhods in that they aren't the sharpest, but they are very smooth and very easy on the skin. I like them more than the Voskhods. And they're incredibly cheap: Italian Barber has 200 for $13.

      Those Treet carbons are fabulous. Sharp enough but not overly aggressive. I dig them!

    Oh my God! I was going to ask you to review those - because you mentioned them a few weeks ago that you will review them (around Feathers review). I learned about them on youtube - one guy who was reviewing over 30-40 obscure safety razor blades (lots from China/India/Russia and rest of the world) - said these were on the top of his list. Anyway, thank you Nick for the review - awesome as always!!

    Nice video. I just tried a Voskhod last week. It felt comparable to a Derby to me. It did tug a bit but I found that it would be next to impossible for me to cut myself. I even hit my chicken pox scar and the blade hopped over instead of slicing it off.

      Wow, Voskhod and Persona are probably the best blades I've used so far. Maybe Astra or Wilkinsons Sword after that. Derby and Shark were smooth on the sides but not sharp enough for the goatee area, knocking them out of the running for me.

    nice review
    i like the way you can quantify the feeling you sense during the shave
    i'm working on paying more attention so i can do the same instead of a blanket liked or hated them
    i've used voskhod blades and liked them
    got mine from IB in a russian blade sampler a long while ago
    thought the swedish steel blades were the best of the bunch on my skin back then
    polsilver and gillette yellows are my usual go to blades but i mix it up quite a bit and go back to blades i tried years ago
    funny that i still don't like most of the blades i hated but they don't hurt me any more like they used to
    better skills over the years and probably awesome soaps currently make a huge difference
    btw, as far as i know, all blades are teflon or ptfe coated whether they name it or not
    thanks Nick
    hope you don't tire of this anytime soon

    Seems like these are a good candidate for daily shaver blades, maybe in a more aggressive razor. I've never used them but from what Nick said, they aren't super sharp as say, a Feather Hi-Stainless which I would never use as a daily shaver. They're just way too sharp. I would use a Feather in a milder razor, like maybe Edwin Jagger DE89 or a Gillette Super Speed, and only if I had a few days growth. I've been looking for a good daily shaver blade so I might have to give these a look.

    • @Abhikpr.
      @Abhikpr. 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Been asking for this since the beginning since he started the series. I've tried up to 25 different blades and those Gillette blacks are the best out of any I've tried. Personnas, astras, personna Reds, feathers. Name it I've used it. The blacks are sharper than the personnas and smoother than the astras. It's nuts. Those are my go to blades. I'm Indian also and I thought they would be horrible due to the fact they are made in India. I mean I live in Vegas but everytime I've been there i just see shoddy work but to my surprise they are the best I've ever tried.

      Abhi K. I cant agree more, following nicks advise on blades I ordered 100 Personas due to high reviews and praise, but after 3-4 shaves i realized those blades just dont work for me, It feels and looks like im shaving with a peice of glass, I eventually asked my barber what blades he tends to use and he pointed me at the gilette blacks and even gave me a pack to try and i havnt looked back - I hope to see these blades on this series soon.

    These blades didn't work for me at all and I tried them in several different razors. They tugged and pulled to the point where my eyes watered. The only comfortable shave I ever got with these blades was in my 37C slant and it was only the first shave. But that company does make my personal favorite blades which are Perma-Sharps.

    Definitely an underrated and overlooked blade. It's not the sharpest, but unlike the rusted rake feeling of the Derby, you don't get any tugging or irritation. It's very low priced to boot.

    These were so dull when i first used them I had to double check my razor to see if they were even loaded. Was that because of the Teflon coating? They gave me incredible irritation because I had to tilt my merkur 34G at such an aggressive angle to cut

    Great price indeed. The question is how durable they are and how many shaves you can do with one blade before it goes dull. On Teflon, it's also used as an industrial lubricant in many applications and even to make fake ice rinks for skating in the summer.

      What the hell. Get three shaves out of a Voshkie…..use another one…and then another one. You’ve spent 30 cents….the cost of one Feather blade. They are so smooth for three or four shaves….you don’t need to go for six or seven shaves. I use mine until they start tugging a little….and then toss ‘em….and load up another one.

    Nick, I watched your review and decided to order a 100 pack of the Voskhod blades through ebay. I got them for a great price and couldn't wait to try them. I been through four blades now and I'm frustrated as all get out. I get a fairly decent shave on the first shave but on day two it feels like its about to scrap my face off. I'm getting nicks and cuts that I don't get with other blades. I've been putting them in my Merkur 34C so I'm pretty sure it's not the razor's fault. When I put an Astra SP or Personna blade in, my world is right again. I can't seem to figure out what I might be doing wrong. Any ideas?

    • @ktrampel
      @ktrampel 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +James Lynch I would assume it has something to do with the Voskhods being made from carbon steel ??? Maybe dry off the blades after using. The package says "do not wipe" as I assume it would wipe off the teflon. Try pat drying them (pat , not wipe) with a towel.

    These blades have given me my most comfortable shaving experience yet. There's just one thing. The instructions say not to wipe the blade clean after a shave, so how exactly do you care for these blades? I'm only asking because, I don't want them dulling on me too prematurely.
