However I cant help feeling rather sad because the economist who cottoned onto the same insights that Ester Duflo and Abhijit Banergee now advocate, were first voiced by the Chilean 'Barefoot Economist' Professor Manfred Max-Neef, forty years ago. He died in August. He was my mentor and friend, but was largely ignored by the Professional economics establishment. He wrote in 1982 " "I know that waiting for grandiose solutions to come from the top is not only self-serving, but turns me into a passive accomplice of a situation I dislike. Therefore I know that one must do what one can do. No matter how little it is, it is nonetheless a human testimony.. and human testimonies.. as long as they are not based on greed or personal ambition for power.. can have unintended positive effects."
