I realised this long back, I was one of those aspirants, the culture one gets inside during the UPSC preparation is brutal competition and aggressive hustle, most of which is unproductive - reading newspapers, objective history, government schemes and many such topics which reduce you to nothing if you don’t clear this exam. I just gave one attempt and I was good. Thank god. I am out of it now, I am a Scientist working for Google now. Living happily.
Exactly, I was a banker, & I resigned from my job to pursue this, & gave 1 attempt. Now as my 2nd attempt is coming, I have gained a better perspective and I'm going to pursue public policy & research as I genuinely like the field. I'd be able to do the work which I hoped to in the Service, & probably a lot more. Congratulations on your achievement, btw.

❤✅💎🔥🎵 Sanjiv Sanyal is a person completely devoid of ground reality. Even if a person becomes rich in India, all it takes is 1 bureaucrat or 1 politician to take take everything away from you, make your life miserable & maybe torture you to end your life. Being in govt job provides you immunity from many such nonsense. Even in 2024 i can't open a bank account without going to bank 3-4 times, bcz staff are just intrested in opening accounts of those who will buy insurance/ take credit card/ put atleast rs 5000 deposit. Better late than never. Thank god atleast someone who has worked at the highest level of the government acknowledged this fact and presented it to the public. It's high time that indian youth start to prioritise their preferences.

This is a real problem which people are afraid to talk about as it offends some powerful people in this country. This will definitely hurt ego of some people but will benefit lakhs of young aspirants who waste energy and time in getting into services which is not actually meant for them. We should also get into larger discussion of creating a system in India, wherein one can identify his/her core area of interest at an early age and strive in that direction instead of blindly taking up UPSC or for that matter any other competitive exam.

VC Firm Tiger Global owns a stake in TVF as well as in Unacademy (might have been clear form the heavy promotion of Unacademy in TVF shows but still). Sanyal is making a valid point, government jobs will continue to decrease. However, there needs to be someone holding government to their end of the bargain. Bring in the Kothari Commission reforms, 6% of GDP for education, 3% for R&D. No government except the Atal government has gotten close. If done we will hit double digit growth numbers in GDP in the coming years. PM Modi has a clear mandate (hopefully even in 2024) I do want India to spend at least 4% of its GDP on education and 1.5% on R&D in the coming year or two. Else we will leave our youth no choice.

This is exactly what I wanted to say! Preparing for government jobs in droves is a symptom not a disease in itself. Address the causes and the symptoms go away.
Exactly that's why you will see a lot of people from IIM, IITs who are earning lakhs per month in corporate sector are leaving jobs and becoming IAS. Because living in the concrete jungle of metro cities..facing traffic for hours, pollution, crowd lot of people don't like it. Even if u earn a lot of money even in crores you'll have to sit for hours in traffic and inhale the polluted air. But when u become an IAS you'll get a big house away from the crowded area, the peace, the garden around your house, the organic veggies of kitchen garden, the gym.in the house and much.more which you can't buy in the cities even after earning a lot of money. That's also one of the reason of choosing this job.
Well......every job has its own problems.....I am surprised why literally nobody talks about problems in govt jobs......low salary, too much focus on protocols, messy and unkempt offices, frustrating delays, political pressure, legal issues, frequent transfers, restriction on freedom of speech, and of course, the most important, luxury trap. We need to see things the way they are.
It's Not poverty of aspirations.. It's Poverty in literal sense. Mr economic advisor should talk about why there aren't more jobs and opportunities for youth esp for those who aren't from a privileged background. People living in poverty can't afford an MBA or build a startup from scratch but what they can do is, spend ₹100 and dream about getting their whole family out of that poverty just by sheer willpower & hardwork. It is not poverty of aspiration. It is pure unadulterated greed for an easy salaried life without accountability. In a private enterprise there's serious accountability. In central government positions you could literally sit on your arse, do nothing and you get to keep your job. It is that simple.
Private jobs are nothing but pure example of existing license raj in the economy. Accountability my foot. By which transparent process they hire people? Totally based on networking and university tags are the criteria for recruitment. These management colleges are nothing but a hiring agencies. Their MBA course adds zero value. Even the IITS fall in that category. No innovation and only pushing hope to get corporate slavery in those few IT mafias. From recruitment such favouritism and efficiency starts and continues thereafter. In UPSC Civils one needs to appear for an exam which requires in depth knowledge of multiple subjects. Mr. Sanyal is completely on the point. British Raj created bureaucracy to rule over a huge native mass. Sooner this Raj legacy is discontinued better it is for the Indian society and economy. I am commenting this after watching from very close quarter for over three decades as to how civil servants work . They have created a false image about them to be omniscient and can decide or frame policies on any matter. Most of them have bloated ego and are members of a strong network. They even grab plum jobs after retirement. In 21st century, all policy making issues be it economic, industrial, labour, education or strategic etc. are highly technical and cannot be simply handled by generalists, but by the specialists. I find many of the recent batch recruits are quite mediocre and they like to create wealth for themselves from day one. Corruption is very high specially in state bureaucracy as there are hardly any watch dogs. We need a very professional bureaucracy like that in Singapore, not power grabbers we see in India.
I think, this craze for UPSC in particular and govt. exams in general will not go, unless lot of other things are fixed. For eg, , limited opportunities in private sector and entrepreneurship(long list of requirements, difficulty in enforcing contracts, etc), especially in states with no private, toxic corporate culture, Indian parents mindset regarding govt. jobs:- a govt. peon is more respected than an Apple store owner. What compounds this problem is rotten Indian education system, which has led to rise of expensive coaching classes.

A fact: The Indian Civil Service (ICS), officially known as the Imperial Civil Service, was opposed to the entry of Indians into the civil services. Therefore, to discourage Indians from competing for the said examination, Lord Lytton lowered the maximum age of eligibility from 21 to 19 years.

For me these words of Sanjeev sanyal is nothing more than propaganda. Because they want fewer aspirants, hence less aware people, they can hire lateral entry candidates of their own choice and nepotism in bureocracy as well. But yes all those engineers and IIM passed out candidate or doctors they don't need to come in this field rather they need to focus in their respective field and make their career high.
Great, please bring more such people with unique perspective. Same thing was happening with CA exams few years back, I don't know what is status of it now. But I had seen a lot of students attempting CPT (CA entrance) exams. And felt the same situation Mr. Sanyal has spoken about with context to UPSC, but, on smaller scale. Yes, CA is course not job exam but still, students spent youthful energy on attempting CA exams otherwise which could have been different.
UPSC and SSC should be dissolved and a new method of recruitment should be brought which gives more credit to work ethics and performance rather than rote learning. Something similar to the Agnipath scheme should be implemented, which would allow a much larger set of candidates to start working in government services at lower levels and deserving candidates who perform well in 4 years of service should be promoted and the rest should be given a work experience certificate and a lum sum capital like it is given to Agniveers. The scheme can be called 'Kartavya Path' synonyms to the Kartavya Path in New Delhi.
@@purushotamtiwari535 Tiwari Ji, of course corruption has to be checked while making such a scheme, I am just putting forth an idea, not specifying a detailed plan which takes into consideration all such possibilities and takes corrective measures to keep such behaviour in check. Rather, assessment of behaviour during the early tenure can be one of the foundational causes for retention and promotion of 'Kartavya Veers'.

Its not about poverty of Aspirations, rather people of certain Areas & their local situation every thing based on power equation.... becoming convoyee Neta ji and Mafia Don ji are more difficult , need more hardwork that too very uncertain, so the safest way to get that level of power , only UPSC can deliver...our society is more respectfully or careful about such people, even with in relatives , compared to a high earning IT or Pharma professionals .
When political inequality is increasing a lot...other party's have less scope to progress in today's India,, then getting into civil services is only option for people to become part of power. U suggest GOI to allow political space equally, maintain humbleness by one who is in power. then surely people will happy to find more options.
One thing life has taught me especially during COVID is savings, buffers, surplus and most important incomes matter. We all know what happened to private workers... labor is losing and capital has won.
Also to stop this many attempts the UPSC needs to reform its syllabus and exam pattern so that it becomes possible for serious candidates to crack the exam in 1 or 2 attempts...........rather than utilising 1 or 2 attempts just to get familiar with exam and then crack in 3rd and 4th attempts....thus almost burning 4 to 5 years of their youthful energy......even cracking a scientist exam (ISRO and DRDO) takes 1 year of serious prep and thats all.

Curb corruption and under the table favours completely. Then see, aspirants number will automatically come down to 20-30% of what we see today. Scientist and SDM starts at the same salary structure, infact salaries of all Group A officers is the same. Power is more with IAS but that should be 'power to enable' not 'power to disable'. It is this 'power to disable' that is cashed by many and thus the job is lucrative. No one wants to agree this on public forums openly but the real honey is the 'other than salary' part which people crave for. 'Power' which they always crave is the power to disable, coerce and armtwist. Otherwise, if taken in a positive light that Power = Massive Responsibility and a lot of stress, and only someone who has a knack for administration will find it exciting. All others are in it just for the 'other than salary' part.
Please look to the root cause. Obsession with the IAS is because it's viewed as a ticket to the good life- in many ways. It's at the proverbial top of the food chain. As far as the public perceive, corrupt IAS officers make enough money to last several generations and get away with it as long as they keep those above them happy. Also, centralisation of political power has resulted in bureaucracy becoming all powerful. Who doesn't like power? And ofcourse the free lunches, the travels abroad all on taxpayer expense. As Advisor to the HPM, Mr Sanyal should address the issues that have made the IAS such a coveted service! You can't just wish aspirations away!!
Craze is high in Bihar & UP because these states have the lowest industrialization rate and so youth of these states seldom get a job in their own states and not much aware about the perks of private jobs
I totally concurred with him. Reformation in core areas like education, bureaucracy, police and judiciary could be a way forward but we lack political will, thats the ugly truth.
If everyone starts working for the money, who will work for the nation. Will Mr. Sanyal give the same advice to the people aspiring to join the army? Civil services is not just a career option. Quite agree what sir addressed here, offcourse there should be aspirations for UPSC but never loose your strength in something where you failed or passes because there are other beautiful professions around, which are more popular, loved & valued.
UPSC is definitely a waste of time for many students who do not succeed even after 2-3 attempts and coaching institutions focused on UPSC can make a hell lot more money coaching entrepreneurship if they work on a mixed fees + profit sharing model with student startups... If you are a coaching institution owner or teacher, you should seriously consider opening an entrepreneurship course as well, at least for students who do not clear UPSC in 2 attempts.

One thing to observe: only ias/ips and coaching wallas got triggered by Shri Sanjeev Sanyal Ji's statement. And Sanyal is extremely talented, he wrote 3 well researched books and frequently writes interesting articles and research papers. Finding bureaucrats as talented as him is very difficult. Thus govt was FORCED to induct him using lateral entry. And jinka promotion nhi hua wo ias ro rhe hain.
Just wanted to add one thing , lateral entry at JS post is also due to very less numbers of vacancies for IAS during Congress and this creates shortage of ias officers at Central level ....after 2014 gov increased ias vacancies...So don't hype lateral entry as talent driven scheme...even gov had clarified in the past that it was to address shortage of officers.....(Even print has published article on this)

Some people are saying that doing CA for long is also a waste of time. I disagree with this. Even if someone is appearing for CA final exam in his 30s, the course offers him enough opportunities to be financially independent. Even that person can work for alternateive 3-4 months at any CA firm. A CA final student can not remain unemplyed unless he himself wishes to remain so. Thats not the case with competitve exams like UPSC.
That's true.... CA is a professional Course it gives you practical knowledge of financial systems. Even a failed CA aspiration can make a good living as finance person. He can be a banker in private or govt sector, etc... He can do an MBA and become a finance beast, the one, the companies are looking for... Unlike a UPSC aspirant who is good for nothing if he achieves nothing.
Where else can youth take an exam on abstract subjects like sociology , gender studies, , political science, geography , Romance languages etc..and still clear a path to lifetime of power, pelf and aish?
Indian government also needs to make the laws more in favour of entrepreneurship.
I think he should visit states like Bihar, UP to see the ground reality and understand why it's happening.
UP is developing. Tell me why is Bihar like. I am a Bihari myself and I am ashamed that my state is a burden on Our Country's economy who made it that way?

I fully agree with Dr Sanyal. We loose many bright young minds to this who could otherwise be a star in some other field.
Mr Hon'able Advisor , Kindly tell the options available in India for Middle class Students?
I think, this craze for UPSC in particular and govt. exams in general will not go, unless lot of other things are fixed. For eg, , limited opportunities in private sector and entrepreneurship(long list of requirements, difficulty in enforcing contracts, etc), especially in states with no private, toxic corporate culture, Indian parents mindset regarding govt. jobs:- a govt. peon is more respected than an Apple store owner. What compounds this problem is rotten Indian education system, which has led to rise of expensive coaching classes.

I know a same case but instead of UPSC he wasted his life pursuing PhD in USA. Useless end result sadly
This is a very good point. I agree 👍🏾
It’s a personal choice what an individual wants to become. If people are preparing to become government officer and nothing is wrong. If you think preparation is waste they you are free to choose any other carrier.
Great Insight by Sanjeev Sir...
Very very well said, it's an eye opener.
It is the colonial mindset of Indians. I think Nikil Kamath said this " Even though a call center executive may make 1lakh a month, a Doctor making 25k gets more respect"
That's legal income just think of malai 😂😂😂 12%
Doctors earns in crores through private practice don't be lame
@@sandeepkatroliya3923 🤣🤣🤣 in reality you get 1lakh per month if you do speciality then get 3 lakh per month it take 8 years + experience of 10 years to earn crore
By recommending unnecessary surgeries, prescribing medicines where they get commission, definately doctors earn more. It's a business
Thank you 🎉
Curb corruption and under the table favours completely.
His thought is absolutely correct
The reality is that IAS lobby is too strong. That is only reason for this cult. Govt should break down this lobby to make India move ahead.
Kaise..pls enlighten
@@sandeepkatroliya3923by outsourcing parts of administration to private companies and contractors
@@lantherpagdiThat would never happen. Remember how they all reacted with lateral entry?
So true. There is a wide spread if poverty of aspiration in our country and shortage of icones
Poverty of Aspiration is because of Politics killing it.
Absolutely correct...
Absolutely right issue has been raised by Mr. Sanyaal
Chalo finally someone is speaking about it
Same problem with CA course
Craze is high in Bihar & UP because these states have the lowest industrialization rate and so youth of these states seldom get a job in their own states and not much aware about the perks of private jobs
I totally concurred with him. Reformation in core areas like education, bureaucracy, police and judiciary could be a way forward but we lack political will, thats the ugly truth.
Ab koi prepare hi nahi karega.......mai akele jaunga exam dene aur sidha IAS 😂😂😂😂😂
Aur tu karega kaya chaprasi 😂
He is absolutely right, why don't GIC do not setup center in Up, bihar or Rajasthan because everyone is running for government job
If everyone starts working for the money, who will work for the nation. Will Mr. Sanyal give the same advice to the people aspiring to join the army?
Civil services is not just a career option. Like the army, they are a way to serve the nation, which mr. Sanyal is doing himself as the economic advisor.
Masst joke maara. Everyone knows why people become IAS IPS. It's not love for nation definitely
BA, Bcom, Bsc Degrees - They are big part of population who are preparing for this exam bcoz they don't have opportunities like Btech, MBA. 😕
I love that he used the term AAANTEL😀
Unfortunately I couldn't understand😂😂

Exactly...
Private companies don't select UPSC aspirants who have gap of 2-3 years so this fear creates the dirty loop. They don't leave the coaching because of market not accepting them and they carry on their preparation. I don't blame markets but markets and as a society as whole , we should accept gap guys whole heartedly purely based on their talent.
This is one such platform...where u can become king...a royal life..for middle class ...u cannot fight election without money nd muscle power nd social background...for a poor guy ...only platform...
My father is ex ias officer 1989 batch.. he told me to focus on private sector rather than government because in their times students didn’t have enough options and private sector didn’t pay that good as compared to present situation😊
U have to give some safety nets. Even risk takers take calculated risks; not like if this doesn't work, I'll be homeless n poor n maybe starve to death, definitely worth it. Innovation doesn't happen in a vacuum. Look at the level of your universities. Unless we can provide basic amenities to at least 70-80% of our population, the patents aren't going to start flowing in.
1) Upsc exam is not the waste of time. It proves ability of himself/herself.
2) why we choose upsc exam?...
Upsc treats equally all... It is the constitutional body. Am I right sir..
3) yah sir, youth energy is wasted in other sector. But it doesn't suit to upsc. Upsc students search the job easy to survey.
4) sir, unemployment and poverty is high in India. First we concern about it...
5) In North India, many people didn't get education. Education gives rational to the people. Then People choose the correct leader to India.
6) If people get the education, they will get the job easily. Unemployment and poverty will reduce..
He himself not able to clear in 3 attempt, ask him why he has given those attempts.
Lol he never gave attempts he went for higher studies and gained expertise, instead of upsc aspirants orgasming by believing they are the best 'generalists'
He's clearly frustrated with the present condition of his home state. Thank you Sanjeev babu. You haven't forgot your roots. May we Bengalis rise from the ashes again...
Just wanted to add one thing , lateral entry at JS post is also due to very less numbers of vacancies for IAS during Congress and this creates shortage of ias officers at Central level ....after 2014 gov increased ias vacancies...So don't hype lateral entry as talent driven scheme...even gov had clarified in the past that it was to address shortage of officers.....(Even print has published article on this)
Whatever Mr Sanyal has said is absolutely correct
AGREED 💯
Let them aspire if they want to, as long as they want to. Mind your own businesses.
On a side note, it's funny how unapologatically they interrupt each other.
He is spitting truth!!
Quit studying and let's sell tea on the roadside.... everyone who got a big position suggesting others what u r doing, are meaningless......I think government jobs are a one stop solution for lower middle class families,... Because they don't have enough money to start a business if they start then have to wait their whole life to succeed the business if everything going good.So listen to inner conscience..
It’s not like JEE or JEE advanced …a path to guaranteed income, guaranteed pension, guarantee post retirement employment and unlimited opportunities for graft ….and you say Indian youth are stupid ?😂😂😂😂😂😂
Rpf Dede Rr mat kar idhar
indeed a lot of Indian youth are stupid
Absolutely agree with the title
Aspiration to be an "antel" or Union leader 😅😅😅 and perfect realization.
true that, "diversity of aspirations" is way forward for all the petals to bloom in viksit bharat.
UPSC or any other pursuit is not inherently a waste of time. The value lies in how we approach it.
Indeed it is, they are wasting their prime years without generating wealth when they are capable to do so.
Ultimately it hampers the growth of country
IAS/IPS selection should based on experience in the field in which government required and position which they are holding in company in which they are working....This will help many youths to stop wasting their precious life(22 to 32 years)
