  • Wilson SHIFT Review #tennis
    For the past two weeks, I’ve been testing out a brand new racket… the Wilson SHIFT.
    It’s an interesting one as it’s been released as a prototype that consumers can buy, with the aim of providing more robust feedback for Wilson Labs to make adjustments to the finished product.
    Also, it has a different way of flexing than most rackets.
    Let me know what you think of it or if you have any questions?

    The 315 is pretty cool. To me it felt a lot like an 18x20 pure drive, a little more juice than spin. The weight was nice on flat serves and slices. Off the ground I couldn’t quite the spin I needed (I play mostly 16x19), but it had a lot spin than traditional 18x20s. Definitely worth a hit!

      Interesting comparison to an 18x20 pure drive. That is a nice market to go after. I might have to give it a go. An 18x20 pure drive would be intetesting. Babolat are you listening? Lol.

    • @b.lakeberg7456
      @b.lakeberg7456 ปีที่แล้ว

      @user-hb5iu6re6x Yes, I agree the volkl v8 pro is an 18x20 pure drive style frame. I liked the v8 pro. It should be more popular.
      I am surprised babolat has not made a pure drive with a more controlled string pattern. 18x20, 16x20, or 18x19 could be cool choices.

    Great review Ashley! I’m a wilson coach myself and had the chance to use the 315g version in January absolutely loved it…I found the frame a lot more forgiving due to the new latal flex than my current blade and a lot more friendly on my arm and found that with the 99sq head i got a lot more spin especially slice wise & control while not losing out on any power! And because there very head light it took me some time to understand I didn’t have to swing as fast as I had to with my blade! I’ve used the blade interation of rackets for over 10 years and i’m going to move to the shift after using it!

  • @rafaelfuas

    Thanks for the review! It has increased my appetite for testing it as a topspin player. I really like the concept of a side flexy point. Training with a Slinger Bag also is a massive advantage in terms of topspin. The bag is beautiful and super classy but players have already their own and it will end up being used for other purposes rather than taking to the court... Maybe to the airport. If Wilson Labs is keen to reach me out, I'm in New Zealand! 😅

  • @dreamy7335
    @dreamy7335 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I like the bag!!!!! And I like the racquet too. I’ve been using Wilson Burn 18x16 for years, so the open pattern shouldn’t be a problem for me. Thanks for the review!!

  • @a2casius
    @a2casius ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To me, this sounds like a much stiffer version of the Clash and indeed, the sound coming off the stringbed is very "metallic" which have always meant uncontrolled feedback from the frame, to be avoided. I can fully understand the Shift is an experiment on a few fronts for Wilson no less in how they're marketing it. For me though, it results in far too much confusion and less trust in the experiment, and so I'm less likely to be too inquisitive until much further down the line, if ever. Thanks for the review though, as always.

    Thanks Ashley. If you’re now looking to test other racquets would be keen to get your thoughts on the Tecnifibre TF40 18x20. As for the Shift I’m a little cynical about the need for yet another Wilson line. Seem to be following Head’s approach. I’d prefer to see focus on improving QA.

    Ashley, the 300 gram Shift is intriguing for me. I’m an all court 4.0 senior looking for a lighter racket that will be good for my backhand, good for flat as well as spin and slice, and good for touch, drop shots , etc. Will it support my play style? Best, John

    So I just tried this racket compared with the percept, and for me the Wilson performed much better! I did try the ezone which felt great too, but I think the Wilson was softer on the feel. I can’t wait to try them head to head.

  • @CH-yp5by

    4G at 53lbs... thats a very high tension for such a stiff string! I hope has a comfortable frame non stiff ! The racquet looks good and I am a fan of the string pattern and weight. My current racquet is 305g unstrung and a little head heavy for my single handed backhand, this one is already head light and at 300g that extra 5g missing allows room for customisation for more plough through while maintaining balance.

    You said that it reminds you of the extreme-line. Would you mind sharing some thoughts about that? The shift compared to the extreme Tour and MP? I'm play-testing new rackets soon and haven't decide yet which one to go for. =)
    I'm a 5.0 player that likes to hit heavy from the baseline (like to use spin to move the player but more often I am the player who likes to flattens out the strokes in the end), I got a two handed backhand and base my game around heavy serve. I am currently playing with Wilson pro staff 97 (the old red ones) It gives me good control and some power (with lead) but I feel that I need a racket with more spin and power to not fall short when playing better players.

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It felt more like the extreme (mp) than the speed to me due to its higher launch angle and spin production. To be honest… with your game and what you’re used to, I’d look at the new Pro Staff v14 X !

    I have both the Clash 100 pro V1 and the new Ultra100 V4. Sometimes the Ultra is a bit too stiff and the Clash sometimes flexes too much unexpectedly and it feels like a “noodle” and the ball launches long. This almost sounds like the Goldilocks frame in between those two. Unfortunately I can’t find anywhere to demo this yet…..

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely at the stiffer end. I’m sure demos will start to become available for you!

    Hi there, I am interested in testing this racquet and providing some feedback. My stroke is flat for both the forehand and backhand. I am always looking for ways to gain more spin without losing power. I love hard racquets, and I am currently playing with a Yonex 70 stiffness.
    Could you please provide any lead on how to get in contact with Wilson?

  • @Jackripster69
    @Jackripster69 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Changed to the 315 during the week from the Clash Pro V2. Interesting my hitting partner felt i was getting more spin from the Shift, probably because i could let go a full swing more often.
    The biggest change ill need to overcome is the serve though. The weighting feels very different between the two and the Shift315 has super rewards awaiting when swung without a hitch or abbreviation. One serve i actually thought id broke the racquet, i could feel an insane flex (yes more than the clash) and it made a real cracking sound from the frame. Just a shame the serve was a few inches long - which was the story of my night, hit the tape or just long. I really missed that extra spin on my serves to bring the ball back down. Just something ill have ill have to work on, but worth it as theres lots of extra power there due to the weight.

    • @TheTennisMentor
      @TheTennisMentor  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting feedback, thanks for sharing, I’m sure it will be useful for others! It always takes me at least a few sessions to fall in love with a racket… the first hit always feels like something’s not quite right!

      I own both the 315 and 300 versions of this racquet and I agree with what you said about the serve. Sometimes the 315 would send the ball long if you hit through it with not enough spin. Sometimes it would be short of you put too much spin. If you get it right, the spin is incredible....you just have to be more precise. The 300 seemed to have easier spin and didn't seem to take as much precision to get the ball in the service box with incredible spin (sometimes it looked almost supernatural). Both versions are incredible for those who like to hit with a lot of spin. For those who hit more flat shots, I would look at something like the Pro Staff.

      The new radical design is awesome, I love the orange/blue combination. How does it hit?

    • @monsoon835
      @monsoon835 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@10SMaxx-e5j it's very solid, like literally. it feels a bit head heavier than the previous one, very slightly. it rewards preparing early and using your bodyweight to hit the ball, and consequently generally can hit high balls very well. pretty good racket overall

    • @jordanwinn5330

      Fairly standard for the pure drive, pure aero, extreme families. Huge jump from the speed racquets tho

      Pure Aero 98 - 65
      Extreme MP - 66
      My guess is the 45/clash tech in this racquet makes the firmness palatable. But still, 68 gives me pause.

    Bag = gimmicky marketing crap. Should be free.
    Colour = okay but a bit bland. Wilson 3Dlogo on the throat is gimmicky.
    Happy to try it but there's not one that meets my preferred spec. 16x20 or 18x19 at 305g or 310g would have been more interesting.
