I too thought that Elphaba being bullied for being green was weird for that world at first, but when I thought about it I realized a couple things. 1. She is the only green person, so the citizens will see it as odd 2. She mainly had issues in areas outside of the Emerald City. Odd things stand out more in countrysides, versus a big city. Notice that she wasn’t treated oddly in the city.
On stage she turns to Glinda and says "I want to remember this moment, always. Nobody's staring. Nobody's pointing. For the first time, I'm somewhere I belong."
These are very good points. I do suppose that the scarcity of a green person is what makes her odd. Now that I think about it, the ubiquity of magic and talking animals, etc... in this world diminishes their oddness. And your other point is also true, things do stand out more in countryside towns vs. densely populated cities. Communities in big cities are not as tightly knit as communities in rural towns so there is more room for anonymity. I still do think people should have been more kind to her, but I guess choosing to add society as another antagonist makes for some more drama. Again, these are great points. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Unlike you, I am someone who is driving around in my car listening to the soundtrack and let me tell you the songs are outstanding and the orchestrations are masterful. I am a musician and a Broadway lover so I see/listen with a different set of eyes and ears than you do. I’m giving it a 95. One of the best movie musicals of all time!
So glad you love the music! I have some friends with a musical theater background and they pointed out how difficult it is to sing live WHILE dancing, so that makes me respect this art form even more. I'm more of a rock guy and only had exposure to few Broadway musicals before this, but the film has really opened my eyes to the world of theater. Thank you for your comment!
I don't get the thing that her being green isn't surprising in a fantasy world. All the things you describe are normal I that world, her being green isn't so naturally people would treat her differently
Now that I think about it, that makes total sense. I guess I wasn't looking at society's attitude towards her through their perspective, but through my own perspective as someone who doesn't live in a world with magic and talking animals. Thank you for your comment
Great objective review.
