Always thought the ghia was a perfect candidate to swap to electric. It's got just enough back seat to be a grocery get, daily commute car. Very practical.
Part of the old classic vw is the SOUND.....Missing when you go electric. the iconic sound of the flat 4 air cooled engine....But really nice job. Great for a commuter.
Nice to see choices out there. My Karmann was restored with a few custom choices, but it still makes a nice sound. As with any other aircooled VW,there is always a question in the back of your mind as to whether you will make it home or not....with electric options sidestepping some of the dependability/fire hazards, and definitely the sound . This idea would be my choice if I found a car needing major mechanical work. But I would miss the sound.
A cool quick California cruiser. What a dream car. The Karman Ghias were not quite uncommon in my childhood Finland. I wonder how many are left. Someone should do to them what you do.
This car is just gorgeous. What's the recharge time on a classic conversion like this? Does your firm do any other upgrades to the cars? Modern brakes and suspension, that kind of thing?
That looks exactly like the evwest car that I watched a full build on. The only difference I see is the bracket on top of the motor that has the company name.
Hi David, what is the relationship between EV West and Zlectric? I'm wanting to find a KG (I owned a 1967 model in the late seventies, never should have sold it) to electrify. Thanks, Daniel
That's one of my favourite cars I'm looking to buy one of those electric jobs one question how do the heaters and the AC works and is there room for groceries and luggage that sort of thing please get back to me thanks
Electric heaters work just like ones you plug in at your home. A/C works by an electric motor-driven compressor. There's not much room in the front or back for groceries in this vehicle. The batteries take up most of the space. There is some space behind the front seat for groceries.
A Kool, kwick, kwiet, kaliforny kar 66 years ago? Wow, U & vw both lookin goood! But really, a design J Ward likes is OK avec moi. I'll B kalling U there in Kali soon as I hit that lottery, so find a real rally red rad racin ghia 4 moi aussi!
David, I liked your video a lot, I will Contact you thru your email, and I hope you will be interested to share experience with us. We have a vision to help reduce the big air pollution problem in Mexico City. Congratulations, so far the best solution I have seen.
I'm confused. You say this is built by Zelectric but the vehicle looks very much like the EV West built Karmann Ghia, in fact you show clips of that build throughout this video. What gives?
@Dan The Man - Put the groceries in the back seat area and avoid any sudden stops that would hurl that jar of mayonnaise to your windscreen. You could also improvise since this is obviously not a Tesla, which is more practical and a lot more money, I assume.
You have batteries where the gas tank was, batteries where the back seat was and batteries where the front trunk/spare space was and still it only goes 140 Miles per charge? I dunno man. Not gonna do much "bombing the coast" like that.

Stunning ride and accomplishment.... Much respect to Zelectric.. You guys rock.
Oh my god , my hands get wet , when i see this video ! Such a nice car , incredibel !
Karmann Ghia is still the coolest VW ever. Volkswagen needs to make a retro Ghia based on the new Beetle chassis but fully electric from the factory.
Great video guys.. I love the kit idea. You've got my gears turning now.
Love this car! You guys are amazing.

Gorgeous! What an amazing job you guys do!
Fun to drive, great in style, 0 emissions, 0 maintenance, we can say this is the perfect car ever.
Rider Geek still have to do regular Mx. Brakes, lubing the front axle, fluid change... but no engine related stuff, agree. Dream car

What a beautiful ev.
Amazing stuff! Congrats! 🤔😎👍🤪

Great work! Best regards from the Volkswagen homeland!
Nice ghia. I have a 69 Ghia that I saved from being crushed. I want it on the road as my daily driver 👍
Wow! Wow! Wow! if my engine wasn't working right I would try to go your route.
great that everything looks period correct
Thanks a lot for sharing the video of Awesome electric Karman Ghia. Very nice car, David. Warmest regards from Indonesia...
You guys are sooooo cool 😎
Prettiest car ever.
Amazing!!
Have you ever converted a Volvo p1800es?
I guess it’s a Kharman Electra Ghia now
How much did that kit cost? Including the transmission
Amazing work! no structural reinforcement was needed?
How much total would it cost to do a Karmann like this. Both heat and air included? And what's the horse power
In Morro Bay, California. And I've had the car since it was new.

Dougale MacAlestyr Thank you, yes, many upgrades, check out zelectric.com/faq

Yes, good eye. We've worked closely with EV West for the past 9 years. This build was the prototype for the their kit. db
Seems old air cooled VW's are the ideal EV conversion vehicles.
No mention of air conditioning - did I miss something?
ghias dont have ac
Mexican A/C. WORKS. I own a Ghia for 33 years and didn’t miss it

how does the cabin heat work? for those in cold climates.
It comes with an electric heater.
Please do a Squareback
😮 That was my original.
Awesome! Is there such a creature as an electric Mustang?
There sure is. And it's crazy. th-cam.com/video/q7vTCK9ywBA/w-d-xo.html
Red paint color is, is it?

Hi, David, I love what you did. I have A71 Carmen, gia SIM color red 320000 miles original engine on the original owner. Think about what I do.
Sweet!
Can you tell me what that steering wheel cover is? thanks
Can you keep it with the original or an alternative 4 speed gearbox
Yes.
@@Zelectric
Perfect would that effect the reverse button or is it just not included. Thanks for the reply😊
@@jackhetherington4751 You’d be able to go backwards in any forward gear with the dash button.
I hope you help me go electric in the future I live
0-60 in HOW long?
cost?
But last paint job was screwed up and it's more orange red
Do you have batteries with more horsepower?
The limiting factors are the inverter and the motor.
Not super practical but way cool. Awesome car for a windows-down quiet cruise up the PCH.
How much do the components to make such a conversion cost ? (motor+batteries+extras)
Please check our website for more info zelectric.com/the-build
It's easily got $15,000 worth of batteries in it, so not cheap.
You have to do everything classic.
Don't use plastic & digital electronic meter gauge.
I have some rusty movement on body work.

What is whith the VW you guys are allergic to pintos ?
I'm confused. You say this is built by Zelectric but the vehicle looks very much like the EV West built Karmann Ghia, in fact you show clips of that build throughout this video. What gives?
I was going to ask the same thing......any response , Zelectric?
Same car. We've been working with EV West for the past 8 years or so. They did the HV wiring on this build.
Here's what I want for my FIRST Electric Car: BASIC Car ( K. I. S.S.) ~ Charge on 110vac~ No Computers ~ Digital Read outs ~ 100
You're not going to be able to do this without computers. Even this build uses a few.
There's no place for luggage anymore though :-/
Plenty of room left in the rear jump seat area. Our client carries her golf clubs back there. -db
Never was ha ha
I've owned two Ghias , there never was room for baggage lol

Back seat (jump seats) are still present.
The gas tank was in the front with the spare Omega
@@fredreinhardt615 There was space above the tank in my Ghia. Plate # 1STGHIA.
KILL THE MUSIC OR ENUNCIATE. HARD TO HEAR LOW KEY VOICE WITH MUSIC DRONING ON.
the speaker narrates very low ..
lack of enthusiasm seems to be sick
That’s my favorite part. He’s the chill guy at the coffee stand by the beach that you want to talk to all day about life and philosophy.
Try to speak more clearly...
How to ruin a car
Step 1: Keep its pitiful 35HP gasoline engine in place.
