- Are you looking for the best burger in New Jersey? How about the best burger across the pond in NYC? In either case you should make a short trek to White Manna in Hackensack, NJ. White Manna serves hands down the best burgers in NJ and some of the best burgers in the US. Maybe even the best burger in the world. It also has another location in Jersey City called White Mana Diner, but this is not a White Manna vs White Mana Diner video, it is focusing on the Hackensack location. The Hackensack location is one of the best cheap eats in New Jersey and one of the best sliders you will ever have. After eating here you will never want to eat White Castle ever again!
White Manna cheeseburgers and White Manna sliders are so good that Anthony Bourdain visited White Manna once and raved about it. This place has been around since the 1930s and they still cling to their old-fashioned burger recipe. If you are looking for one of the best eats in New Jersey, and one of the best eats near NYC, you have to make the trek to Hackensack to try this place! You won't regret it, trust me! It is one of the best burger joints in the US!

I used to hang out in Jersey but it was mostly south Jersey. It’s arguably the best states due to the convenient location of the northeast corridor of the U.S.

@@uaeats Yah the origins of the burger come from the great depression. They used to smash onions into the patty to cut down on costs. Ended up becoming a staple

You always kinda hint that you lived in a lot of places. I know I’d love to hear a little behind the scenes but maybe you like the mystery. Either way it’s aaaallll good. Just eat 1. 10 lb bag or raw yellow onions a week and you will love onions.

The burgers look delicious! 😋 If you’re ever in West Springfield, MA you have to try White Hut. They serve cheeseburgers with fried onions, hot dogs, and fries. They’ve been around since 1939. Another place about 10 miles north in Holyoke, MA is Nick’s Nest. They’re known for their hot dogs and have been around since 1921.

I’m pretty sure there’s a hidden great burger place in California. California is an above average food state. A lot of really good delicious places are kind of hidden.

Next time I'm in NJ, I'll try! If you ever make it out on Long Island, check All American in Massapequa! I drive out there from Queens when I have a craving! But don't knock my White Castle 😉

I grew up in Hackensack and loved that place. Cheese burgers the best. You have to get at least 4, I usually picked up a dozen, even good as left overs.

I'd love to see a review of All American in Long Island. I'm not sure if they're good burgers but as someone who grew up on public school cheeseburgers, it's quite the nostalgia trip going there.
I lived in NYC for four years and ate here weekly. To this day, they are still the best and I always stop in when I travel to NYC. A crab and pork soup dumpling, a Shanghai fried rice, a Shanghai fried flat noodles, a sesame beef, and pea shoots is my ultimate meal. I’ve tried every where else and honestly can’t find better or even remotely as good. 🤷🏻♂️
Atillio's Italian Family Restaurant in Wilmington, DE! Make sure you get the fried smelts as well as the dried/roasted peppers and eat them on top of a slice of bread with butter, parmesan, and a pinch of salt!
They are very unique and worth the trip!

I once worked for a political party that sent us all over NY/NJ to knock on doors... one time I ended up in Hackensack with my boy the weed man Duncan and blew off work to come to this diner. Have been searching for it ever since.... these are so good.

An interesting bit of history: there used to be a few "White Mana Diners" in the area, but only the two you mention remain. They're also now separate, each operated by separate owners. And if I may editorialize: I definitely prefer the sliders at the Jersey City location!

Spot on, I agree and prefer the JC location too. Fries are different in JC for some reasons, but usually get the cheese fries.

Agreed, way overrated. Went as a kid and went again as an adult after playing games at Icehouse. Same as I remembered as a kid and not worth going back. Although they are cooked on a griddle, the flavor and texture of the burgers resemble more boiled ground beef than something that came off a griddle. Passed by many times after late night hockey games with a huge appetite not even considering making a stop there.
Did he seriously say that these these 2 are related and say the Hackensack location is the superior one…yet he never tried the one in JC? Also the one in JC is White MaNa(one N) and there is no relation, their burgers don’t even resemble one another.
I don’t think the White Mana in JC is anything to write home about either, and definitely not worth the drive from south Jersey, but their patties are definitely superior(although they do not use potato rolls). They’re sourced from Pat LaFrieda(like his favorite Shake Shack, albeit a different blend as Shake Shack’s is proprietary and splurges for dry aged) whose warehouse is down the street on Tonnele Ave in North Bergen.
Those are NOT sliders! There's one on Tonnele Ave rt1/9 and I went there all the time! Never went to the Hacky sack one! The Jersey City one is as good as I need them. A meatball smashed with onions and grilled with the bun on top. IT'S NOT A SLIDER! That's always what the size was when it was 25 cents each!
Honest review here. I personally did not like them. I found them overly greasy and under seasoned. Fries were forgettable. When combined with the 40 minutes I waited, I wouldn’t go back. Judging by their longevity I guess I’m in the minority.
It's like Pat's and Geno's for a cheesesteak in Philly. Both locations are well known, but pure tourist traps. The reality is they're serving sub par trash

Ok, it is a good burger and always hits the spot. BUT? Let’s be honest, this is extremely overrated. They use Martin’s potato buns, regular deli cheese, and frozen patties. The cooking with the onions is what binds the flavors. Nothing special. Good but not worth a trip or a wait. Now, whenever I drive by and don’t see many people, I go in and get 3 doubles with onion and cheese.

Have you been to every burger joint in New Jersey? If not, cut out the hype nonsense by claiming that this is the best burger in New Jersey. You have no idea and you know it. Also, the best burger in any state is not going to be some greasy griddle burger.
How about providing some recommendations instead of critique?
You should do a hot dog tour of CT. Capitol Lunch, Riley’s gourmet, Doogies, Blackies, Super Duper Weenie, Chefs, etc. there are ALOT of iconic dog spots in CT!!!
In Hartford there was a great hot dog place it was called Woodies. Sadly the owners retired and moved to Florida.
i tried this 4 times, and disappointed every single time, i think it is a stupid hype. meat is blank, cheese is cheap and plasticky it is seriously mediocre at best
Ah thanks for sharing your thoughts. I really enjoy it. It's an old-fashioned no frills burger but it does that better than almost any other burger I've had. The meat is juicy and has great onion flavor as the onions are kind of steamed on top of the patties. The meat itself is very fragrant partly by absorbing decades of residual flavor from that grill. The cheese is typical American cheese but I like American cheese on burgers since it melts the best. All good though if it's not your cup of tea. There are more creative modern burgers, with a unique meat blend, fancier ingredients, and a more trendy atmosphere. To each their own though!
