Eating Classic Burger Sliders at White Manna and Exploring Hackensack, New Jersey

  • I eat and review the slider style burgers from White Manna in Hackensack, NJ. The restaurant was originally founded at the 1939 New York World’s Fair and later moved to Hackensack in 1946. Inside, White Manna is a classic looking American diner. After my lunch, I explore the city of Hackensack by first walking along the Hackensack River and then stopping at The Shops at Riverside Mall. Then, I have coffee at STIMULATTE by Bond. Later, I enjoy ice cream from Cranberry Junction and then sip a beer at Alementary Brewing Co. Finally, I check out the old Sears building in downtown Hackensack before heading back to NYC.

    Born and raised in Hackensack and am 76 and ate in the Manna an extreme amt of times. It was the last place we ate before moving to Fl in 2001 just a few days after 9/11 and of course that is what everyone was talking about. I miss my town soooo much and the White Manna.

    Thanks for introducing me to a new Spot. I was always fan of the classical White Castle Sliders. But these ones actually look a lot better. More bang for the buck. And I love traversing through all of the different areas of North Jersey and Bergen County. Thanks James!

    White Manna rules due to the suppliers! Meat comes from a local butcher. Onions from local farmers during season. Lastly bread from the local bakery!

    Nice video. Lived in Jersey City for awhile so I've eaten my weight in White Mana, not to be confused with Hackensack's White MaNNa. The Jersey City Mana is a round space age building which was actually used at the World's Fair and it's open 24/7 so that location gets the edge. Definitely a cool joint to check out for those looking to explore.

    Hackensack....Reminds me of Brewster's Millions. I believe Richard Prior plays for the Hackensack Bulls Minor League Team. So brings back good memories!!! And it's cool that Hoboken is where Baseball was Born!!! The White Manna sliders are kinda round, whereas the White Castle Sliders are kind of square-ish. But definitely looks very filling and satisfying. The onions/pickles add a nice touch for sure. Thanks for the wonderful review James. Always enjoy and appreciate you videos!!!

    If you went to Cranberry Junction, you were right across the street from 2 other Hackensack institutions that are right next door to each other. One is Lido Restaurant who makes a solid NJ bar pie and the other is Cosmo’s Salumeria, and awesome Italian deli that makes amazing hero’s and a pretty solid roast beef and mutz with gravy on Wednesdays. Two of their go-to sandwiches are the #1 which is basically their version of an Italian hero (ham, Soppressata, prosciutto, gabigool,, salami) with homemade fresh mutz and sharp provolone…they make a spicy version of it on Fridays. Hackensack is low key a solid food town…but I prefer MaNa in JC🤭

    Just loved this video! Thank you for a trip to another unique restaurant that's off the beaten path. I've been to both White Manna places and they are equally great. NJ has some terrific spots.
    I live in Manhattan and have a car. Most of my grocery shopping is done there, at half the price. One place you need to try is Hiram's in Fort Lee, just over the GW Bridge. Incredible hot dogs and chili dogs. Prices are low too. Their hamburgers are alright, nothing to write home about. But the dogs are superlative.

    Hi again, James. What I find amazing about your reviews is that almost all of them are of places that I've been to and liked, or at least have heard of... and you're from Chicago. (No knock against Chicago; I've been there many times and like the place.)
    I did not know, actually, that Hackensack was the original location of White Manna... and Hackensack is familiar territory for me: I've spent a lot of time in and around Lodi and Hasbrouck Heights, beginning almost 50 years ago! (Also see "Movin' Out" by Bill Joel.) Now I've driven past the Jersey City location many times, but never stopped in. That location, of course, is on Tonnelle Ave, which is used to get between the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel, among other things. As far as I know, the name Tonnelle Ave. is pure coincidence, but you pretty much have to have spent time driving around this area to know where it is.

    • @Jamesnu
      @Jamesnu  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching! It makes me happy to hear that you've liked a lot of the spots I've visited. I really enjoyed White Manna and I really have to go to the Jersey City location sometime. The story of the two restaurants is definitely pretty interesting. I was amused to learn that the reason why the Jersey City restaurant only has one "n" in "Mana" was because of an error when their sign was serviced. Both restaurants however, seem like iconic establishments!
