    Tony Todd is an amazing actor, and he doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as he deserves.

      Maybe not “officially” but anyone that knows the name Tony Todd knows it for a very good reason. Be it Candyman, Night of the Living dead, Star Trek, he made a deep impression on so many people and he’s recognised for that.

      If he is such an “amazing” actor, then why is he mostly only been doing small supporting roles in action or horror movies?
      I’m not taking anything away from the guy, but you’re using that word way too loosely to describe his acting abilities.
      He’s had a nice career playing it hammy.

    I don't know why people hated the remake. I mean the original was excellent but I really loved the remake. The acting was more realistic, and it was nice too have Barbra evolve into a more strong character and survive.

      I agree. And i don`t know why, but i really had unbelivable urge to hug Barbara whole time i watched it. In original- i wanted to slap the shit outta her and whip her into shape.
      And i`ll just say this- young Patricia Tallman is freaking hot. I first saw this movie when i was 8, and i already knew, she is freaking hot. I just wanted her to show her legs all the way :)
      Also whole reasonig behind why said character is behaving like he/she is behaving is more logical to me for some reason, than in original. McBald Jerk just sort of came like he is an asshole , and that is the reason, why he behaved like he did, while in remake i sort of understood some of his antics. First it was survival of his family, and so he was pissed that even his wife didn`t see that, but later- he wanted to live, and why would he care or help others? Kind of best survivor, if you ask me, in a way. Of course i was glad when karma turned and bit him on the ass, but still...
      And young pair- i also get them more. In original- i dunno if it was because of time it was filmed in- but guy never came across, like he was scared and naive. More like young buck. In 60s 18- 20 year old guy was already a man, often with his own family. "Yeah, move yer ass and do stuff"... Here? These are kids, and not too bright- of course they will do what some older guy with more authority in his voice will tell them. When i was 18, i never considered myself adult, and in situation like that i`d be just sitting somewhere going "let`s adults figure this out", or i`d go insane and get eaten on killing spree, trying to kill all the rotters, but i would never just go out like "we need to sort things out, first- find water, food and weapons..."
      Just makes more sense to me

      New Barbara's the weakest part of the remake, honestly. Because she's our POV character, and when she seriously loses her mind, it's like we've been abandoned as the audience. Or even worse, like we've lost our own minds.

    One of the best Horror remakes ever!! I actually watched this before the original on TNT and I was terrified of leaving my house that night to get something from the store. Watching the Original scared me even more because there were moments I didn't see in the remake. It made me appreciate both versions a lot on what they were saying during their time. The make up and the characters were well fleshed out from the original and love Barb's transformation in this version. Goes with the best Horror remakes with THE THING, THE FLY, and THE BLOB.

    This is one of the few remakes that, in my opinion, is exactly as good as the original. Usually it's either one or the other that's better(more often than not the original), but not here.

    • @devilzdandruff9199
      @devilzdandruff9199 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with that is that the original came out 22 years prior. That alone puts it a cut above the remake. I like the remake but the original did some things better. The black and white added to the dread. The originality was unlike anything to come before it. In 1990, we had pretty much seen it all by then.

    • @aaronjustice9020
      @aaronjustice9020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devilzdandruff9199but it's a remake so of course the original did it first and earlier.
      I personally like this cast and aesthetics better and I think it fits in the trilogy better with Day.

    • @devilzdandruff9199
      @devilzdandruff9199 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronjustice9020 The original has a smarter script, screenplay, better acting and camerawork.. the pacing was also much better. the black and white gave it an almost film noir like look. The only thing that the remake did better was special effects. I’ll give you an example.. when the woman first comes into the house in the beginning of the remake, after all that went down outside, she doesn’t even bother to close the door behind her. The remake is a far inferior effort.. I like it as a fun flick.. but it is far from a classic like the original. I can talk about why this is the case all day long since I am a big fan of Romero’s trilogy. The remake of the Night of the Living Dead fits better than Romero’s original? No offense, but you need to pay attention to what you are watching a bit more closely. Give the original another watch when you can give it it’s due attention. It’s an intelligently written, brilliantly shot, paced and acted horror film.. deals with racism, isolation and character. On a short list of the greatest horror films ever made. Without question.

    • @aaronjustice9020
      @aaronjustice9020 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@devilzdandruff9199 I'd disagree.
      I don't see why she'd need to close the door at that point yet.
      You should read Savinis book on what the remake was supposed to be.

    • @devilzdandruff9199
      @devilzdandruff9199 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronjustice9020 Savini doesn’t have an eye for directing films. He never has. She left the door open and then acted surprised when more zombies came in. She is screaming outside, just went through pure hell and her natural reaction is to come into a house and not bother to close the door? You’re making excuses for a poor screenplay. She also learned how to use a rifle to the point that headshots were a dime a dozen. The zombies do not have half of the desperation and vigor of the first film. Early on, the main character walks past a zombie that is just outside of the frame, yet she would clearly see it just to her side with her peripheral vision. She gets startled as he appears in the frame like she only then saw it. This is an arcady movie done as a goofy and gory flick for fun.. not to be taken seriously as a horror movie whatsoever. Savini either didn’t care about things like this, or couldn’t do any better. Plenty of scenes from the original film completely tear the remake apart when it comes to setting a creepy and unsettling tone. Some of which.. when the electricity goes out and the people look at one another with genuine fear not knowing what to do next. The zombies deciding to circle the home trying to break in together. The excruciating scene with the daughter in the basement and the building up to that scene. The shift in music and how the cannibalistic scenes shown from low angle shots. In your face close up low angle perverse scene.
      The remake has good effects.. which is to be expected, but it is inferior in every other aspect of filmmaking. It’s more of a cartoon than a film. Savini himself would agree.

    To me , the connection of this movie is Patricia Tollman and Tony Todd were in the ST:TNG ep where Riker is transferred to a Klingon vessel. I didn't know about the house owner and the Zombie choreographer. Great info. This movie suffers, in my opinion, because they make Ben and Cooper way more aggressive with each other. The original had Ben much more focused. I think that was a director's mistake.

    This movie actually gave me nightmares as a teenager about seven years after this came out, because it's so claustrophobic and atmospheric, which is just so perfect given the circumstances the characters find themselves in. In its own right, the remake is strong for its own unique reasons. Yes the racial examination is lessened in this, but the interaction with the insufferable father in the basement does it in a more subtle way, which is often the most experienced by people like Ben or even Barbara.

    In my opinion the 1990 version is the best zombie movie of all time. I know there are a lot of people who were more into other films for the gore or whatever reason, but I think they did such a good job that the zombies look like actual dead people walking around. That can’t be stated enough. It looks far better than the CGI garbage everywhere today or overdone makeup. I like it more than the walking dead, resident evil, you name it. I also love the simplicity of the story yet how powerful it really is. I saw it when I was 7 years old before the original and it gave me nightmares for years. This film deserves to be continuously promoted until it gets the recognition it deserves. Great review!

You even brought it up earlier in the video when Barbara say “ They are slow. Why don’t we walk past them.” And Ben says no. She is actually testing her theory and when it occurs to her she was right she sees the ghouls eating the gas pump morons, it shows on her face what a waste it was for them to die when if they would have just did what she asked they would have all been ok. That is why she kept walking in a circle around the ghoul and pushing at it. She completely had all of her faculties.

    You could say Barbra was too helpless in the first one, but it's not because she's a woman, it was set up that she had a phobia of the dead. She represents a character trapped, and drowning in fear and isolation. Let's be honest, a lot of armchair worriers would probably shit themselves and go catatonic in real life, so I don't blame Barbra, and this is one time when you can say it wasn't all about the trope of 'woman weak', especially when you consider Helen opposing her husband and being fairly strong and outspoken, while Judy is brave enough that even though Tom is trying to protect her, she still runs out against his wishes to face the ghouls. Further, if you can say Barbra was the weak woman, you can say Harry was the weak man. I can understand people wanting Barbra to be more proactive like she is at the end, but that's part of the frustration; These are human beings in an incomprehensibly bad situation.
    As far as the re-make goes, I fear there was so much "why does the woman have to be so weak blah blah blah" that there was an overcompensation with Barbra and a weakening of Ben. As if that wasn't bad enough, Tom is played almost for laughs as a complete moron by blowing up the gas pump when he shoots at the lock. It's a Hollywood trope that any spark is going to blow up a gas tank, as if this shit is nitroglycerin. You can see videos of nozzles catching fire (but not blowing up the car or the pump) due to a spark as the metal end touches the metal car, but even then its just the end of the nozzle that catches fire, because it's the fumes that catch fire, not the liquid. The way it was done in the original film was more realistic with the gas spilling all over and the torch catching it on fire because everyone is so frantic. If the bottom of the gas tank catches fire, it can vaporize the gas and cause it to blow up. But anyway, beyond that, Johnny is an even bigger douche while Harry is practically a mustache twirling villain. Long story short, all the men, and I mean ALL the men in the remake get knocked down a notch while Helen and Judy are more or less the same and Barbra gets raised up about 5 notches. Btw, don't even get me started with the rednecks at the end who's sick shit is cranked up to 11. Personally, I feel the original is more even-handed and realistic. Also, where the fuck are the zombies that use tools? The quality and makeup may be better, but ultimately, without Savini's gore to bolster the realism as it could have, I find that the remake has next to nothing over the original.

    Savini’s remake gets no respect - its better than the original! Tony Todd is amazing as Ben and Patricia Tallman was awesome as Barbara

    Yesss. This is one of those rare remakes that not only matches but in my opinion surpasses the original in most respects, although the 1968 version will always be THE classic of classics not just for the zombie genre but horror in general *:)*

    Never watch the original but this is my favorite zombie movie of all time. I guess I will have to watch the original now! I will also need to watch the original Dawn of the Dead, I only saw the remake and... thought it was just too much. The zombie baby just destroyed that movie for me.

    The original first seen zombie didn’t sprint, but he was fast enough to catch up to a rolling car, and tembeeed enough to use bricks as tools etc. The fast smart zombie isn’t a new era thing.

    34 :59 the Blood being splattered on the hung up Trowel is a , i think , obvious nod to the first original ones Daughter kills her mom with a trowel scene.

    • @markpugh6808
      @markpugh6808 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That scene makes no sense at all why the girl murders her mum with a trowel instead of eating her it isn't usual Zombie behaviour unless you go by other films where it is mentioned they still have human memories so I'm guessing the girl hated her mother when she was alive
