My best tip is to stop meandering through stores for entertainment. I’m retired now but had a lifelong habit of going shopping to relieve stress when I was working. I actually didn’t realize what I was doing at the time. It was a habit, like smoking. Now I just don’t go shopping unless I really need something and I take a list. Impulse buying will break the budget in one haul. I have enough, that’s my motto. I’m still trying to pay off the credit card from my impulse buying. It’s a hard habit to shake. Same problem can happen with on-line shopping, just try to realize your problem and talk positively with yourself.
Great tips. My tip is to never stop. Don’t stop the budget when you’re out of debt. Don’t stop the sinking fund, don’t stop the debt repayment even if it’s so hard and it’s only a couple of bucks! Don’t stop going! You got this!
I only shop once a month major. I stay home and am retired, I just don't like to go anywhere if I don't have to! I cook and prepare meals for me and my grandson every day!
Thanks, Dana. I would add that once out of debt, staying out of debt must become a lifestyle and a discipline. Money that was used to pay off debt should NOT then be used to create more debt nor should it be viewed as a "cash cow" for free spending. Must be intentional on NOT using that "freed-up" money to create another cycle of debt. I have experienced this first hand...not good. Thank you again for your very helpful videos every Tuesday 💰☺. ️ God bless you and your family!
Years ago I stopped going to shopping malls or buying online. I try to only go to the grocery store once or twice a month. I plan my meals and cook at home. Years ago the Frugal Chef recommeded, planning you menu, buying the ingredients and then dedicating two hours on Sat. morning just for cooking. This has worked for thirty years for me. On Weds. I plan my menu and make out the shopping list. On Friday right after work go directly to the grocery store, (no one is there and I can finish in 15 minutes). I then cook on Sat. mornings pack it all up for the week and I never cook during the week. I just reheat. :) I also have shopped for my groceries at Aldi's for over 12 years excellent food at the best price. :) I just discovered your videos thanks for the inspiration. God bless you.
Because of you I have a budget and got my husband on board. We are starting to change our perspective on spending already. Thanks for your videos (I’ve been binge watching). You keep it uncomplicated.
I looked up “Ways to Save” and “Frugal Living” , etc several years ago-but the tips, hints, and ideas were only So So...but your channel is Really Good, and I appreciate your work. I really feel like this type of thing is very much needed in today’s society where no one seems to want to take “Home Ec” classes anymore.
Dana you are one of the key reasons I got started on my debt free journey. You simplify things and I feel like I can identify with you as a mother and wife. Thank you and keep at it.
Great video. The real work begins when you are debt free. To make sure we are prepared, we have to save a lot each month to make sure we stay out of debt.
I just found your channel and I'm loving your advice. Also, while binge watching your videos, I realized that we are leading paralell lives. I am also Dana, married to (bald) Jim, in the Philadelphia suburbs, following Dave Ramsey. I have only 3 children though. Just found all the similarities funny 😊 Thanks for your wonderful videos! I subscribed!
I love your videos, I’ve been watching your videos every day, you’re keeping me very motivated on my debt free journey! I was spending way too much money on fast food, especially when I work overtime. My sleeping and eating schedules were so off, and it was so easy to stop on the way home or when going back to work. I haven’t been doing that or buying alcohol and I’ve saved a lot of money!!
We went a little out of order we have a $5000 credit card, HAD $14,000 left on our car payment and then $25,000 in student loans. We paid our car off completely decided to do that because our credit car doesn’t Gain interest until next June, the card is now down to $$3,500 yay! It will be paid off by October then we will be putting more money into our savings for 2 months then January of 2019 we are going to begin tackling the student loans. All on one income
Just started watching your videos and you have a lot of great content. I would just add that I needed to overcome my FEAR of the "what ifs". For example, I had enough in my savings to pay off my student loans but I was reluctant to do so because I was afraid to let go of this money because "what if" I need it in the near future. Then I started listening to you and Dave Ramsey and I just paid off my student loan. I can't tell you how great this feeling is not to have any student loans now. Now I am focusing on paying off my mortgage early. Thanks so much!
I think the first key for me was to realize what I really need and what I just think I need. To learn what "enough" really is. another one sounds weird but it is so true... it is to start creating instead of consuming. it fills that hole I used to stuff with stuff and it also makes me come up with cool ideas that are cheaper than buying. honesty with myself was big. Like being able to tell myself that, honestly, it sucks that this is true but I can't afford some things. and then being that honest with friends too, so I don't have to talk around it every week when they go out for fun. we just can't live in a fairytale world where we lie to ourselves that everything is ok. can't live without the budget.

Our secret was learning our spending styles. I husband is a swipe her. If he has a card in his wallet, he will go crazy at the convenience store. I am a balance checker and I hated seeing the balance go down so I became thriftier. Worked for us!
My secret is that BEFORE payday I work the budget and electronically schedule bills and snowball freedom payment for the day after payday. I know to the penny what is allowed for gas and cash purchases. on payday cash is withdrawn and I know the bills will be paid as scheduled. It's already a done deal.
There was a random sentence in one of the out of depth reality show adds that actually helped me the most when I was trying to get on top of things: pay off the smallest, then use that amount to raise the input for the next dept. When that one ends, use that amount for the next, etc. It doesn't give me extra to spend after it gets payed, but it often doubled the other input and it has ended them faster. Snowball effect it was, maybe? I'm now 3 months away from ending my student loan, so yeah, it works for me.
Hi Dana, really enjoy your channel and I follow all but one of your suggestion categories. I would like to hear once and a while a caveat or two regarding food. I say this because if a person has any health concerns, we can't eat certain things - and usually those things are beans, rice, potatoes, gluten, pasta, breads and heavy starches. Like my hub is 77 and has a heart condition. His Dr put him on the KETO diet which consists of a small amounts of carbs mostly generated from vegies. So our food budget has to be made up with lots of grass fed, hormone free, antibiotic free meats; omego 3 pasture raised eggs and dairy. So all my hubs numbers improved so much the Dr was stunned - and I lost 6 sizes in 9 months - and I am nearly 70! We have never felt so good. But eating sugar and carbs adds weight and often times contributes to many of our larger diseases. My other Dr says, "pay for it now or later" meaning we should buy hormone and anti-bitoitc-free, organic foods, non-GMO - now - so that we do not get plagued with diseases later. But anyway, It is a budget challenge - but we go to a local butcher and local farms instead of health food stores which helps. Anyway, here's to everyone's health!
We have a nice savings. However, our ducting and AC/furnace needs to be replaced before winter. That comes at a price tag of $11,000. We have it but, it breaks my heart to spend that much money.
Invest in home warranty insurance it will pay for it self so when items like your Air conditioner, water heater. other appliances need to be replace all you pay is about 100 dollar deductible. My water heater had to be replaced all I paid was 60 dollars and the warranty insurance paid the rest.

thebestwillow But if it was just math, then no one would be in debt, right? No one in their right mind would pay interest or use money that's not actually theirs? But the truth is that MANY people actually do these things. It's not just math. It's learning better behaviors regarding money and things we buy. It's learning how to set and accomplish hard goals. It's learning how to work and communicate together going the same direction with your partner. Getting out of debt is a lot of things, but it's certainly not just math. Maybe for a computer or non human it's just math, but for humans it involves a lot of thinking and behavior changes.

Cortnee Muhlbauer preschool isn't really necessary. .kids don't really have to start school until 5 yrs..however if you can afford to send them why not?..if you're a stay at home mom then you can keep them home and teach them preschool things and take them to the library and playgroups and things like that
Cortnee Muhlbauer just because everyone is doing it, it does not mean it’s necessary or even effective. Or just because ‘it’s for the kids’ it doesn’t mean the spending is justifiable. IMO. You can also always teach them basic things at home or on your drive to the store.
