Nice job! I agree, ebony is really nice to work with. Just one comment re the sheath, stitching is really what stands out on a sheath and getting the tension on each stitch takes practice; I find that by wetting the leather and then stitching leavers a nice tight finish. Also getting the stitch holes uniform and angle flowing in the same direction gives a better finish. On another note, your blade work is first rate!
I started leather work in 1976, my best source for leather was Leather unlimited, find on internet. All my sheaths were hand tooled a d stitched, I never tied a knot, at the end I would back stitch 3 1/2 stitches so the ends would be on the back, never had a failure, also made the sheaths with with a kydex liner for safety. Never cared for the fork tool for most jobs, I used a fig.. good job overall
Z: Finally! A channel and a guy who knows how to create and build anything! Now I know I'm not alone : ). Your high-speed videos with narration are fun and a pleasure to watch. Thank you, see ya in the shop.
Interesting video. A few observations. I think the sheath is too lightweight at 2oz for knife sheaths. . It is best to recess the thread into the leather to avoid it being abraded, as it will when it is on the surface. Having heavier leather will also allow you to recess the stud into it. Starting and finishing the stitching should use one or two backstitches for strength. Take a look at Ian Atkinson's channel on hand stitching leather sheaths. A very good resource.
Nice video: How do you keep the sharpened edge of the knife from cutting the sinew/string without a spacer of leather between the front and back flaps of the sewn edges of the sheath? During rendezvousing days I made some sheaths like yours. An old timer leather maker set me straight. I started using those knives/sheaths for camp work. Those sheaths have separated from being cut by the blade, however the ones I made with the extra piece of leather (spacer) have never separated?
mostafa hassan different knife steels have different quenching requirements. In general, stainless steels (like cpm154) Cant Be oil quenched. Most of the time the knife steel your using will have specific instructions from the manufacturer as to how to quench them properly. Hope that helps!
