At home we had an Olivetti daisy wheel typewriter and it was fine. At my first job I used a Selectric and it was totally different. The hum when you turned it on. And the light vibration you could feel at your fingertips of something spinning away in its steel belly. I miss my old Olivetti but I don't miss any of the Selectrics I've used since, often at Kinko's. It was from another time.
STILL LOVE the IBM Selectrics!!! Grew up with them and they were freakin' bulletproof. The correction key was/is a GODSEND. I'd be totally comfortable and happy composing a personal letter on one today.
Ah , that selectric sound. it was also be the typewriter of choice on law and order, not to mention so many government offices like Social Security with my sister used to work
You know, you can center the page in the platen. Those upside-down "staple" figures with 4s over them represent the edges of an 8 1/2 by 11 page. If you do that, 0 on the correction table and the dot on the ruler in the front represent the center of the page. Also, the page is centered over the keyboard. They designed it this way on purpose.
I'm hoping to get one of these someday. Im torn between models though. The original Seletric was by far the most aesthetically appealing but that erase feature in the II and III is soooo good. But they're just so boxy compared to the I
I've been talking to some old techs about fixing them. The 1 is just getting too old to keep going now apparently and the parts aren't available. The 2 and 3 are similar enough that they still have a wealth of parts. Not so for the first model.
I was an IBM TECH for almost 8 years still have a blue selectric 2 golf ball typewriter model 895& still do have few parts that humming sound ca be reduced but the golf ball stricking the platonic sound is normal.. there are only a few repeatative keys index key , underscore on lower case & upper case key, space , carrier return key. This machine is marvel the mechanism is super genius design❤
Many of this selectric typewriter writer problems such as the golf ball striking velocity /speed which is controlled by the speed the cycle clutch that is driven by the motor belring located directly below the left hand side black plastic shield towards the middle section & the the shift key slow to activate which has a shift spring located on the right hand "side" of the machine where a few parts like the shift arm that rides on a large "cam" with a velocity sprinp/steel string that controls the impact of each strike so that the paper does perforate certain characters after printing all these can sometimes be easily fixed simply by flushing these mechanisms while in operatiol/while spinning.. no big deal actually & no need to replace any parts even the express back space pinion but only when this fails will l perform a teared down of the mechanisms & replace the cycle clutch spring or simply adjust the white plastic cam using special IBM Tools.. Even the IBM TOOLS ARE SUPERBLY DESIGNED GENIUS INDEED SCREW STARTER, TWIZERS SISSOR CLAMP, FILLER GAUGES BOX SCREW DRIVERS CUTE MINI SPANNARS JUST TRESSURE THESE TOOLS INDEED..JUST NOTE THAT THIS MACHINES USES A SPECIAL IMB MANUFACTURED GREESE THAT COMES IN SMALL TUBES & THIS GREESE HARPENDENS THROUGH TIME & CAUSES MANY PROBLEMS THAT CAN BE EASILY FIXED BY JUST FLUSHING ( I USE PETROL ONLY) & IT WORKS FINE FOR A LONG TIME BUT IF YOU PUMP NEW GREESE INTO THESE AREAS IT WILL LAST A LIFE TIME ACTUALLY.. IM IN MALAYSIA & WOULD HELP ANY ONE IN NEED OF MY SERVICE ANYWHERE ACTUALLY JUST ALSO TO KEEP MY MIND SHARP ON THIS MAGNIFICENT MACHINE.. CHEERS MATE
I have the same colour one but it’s not working at the moment and there no one in my city (maybe all of Australia!?) who can service and fix these beauties 😢
70s it was a fantastic electro mechanical well thought out system, “engineer guy” I think his TH-cam name is made a short simple video about it that’s worth a watch
This is how even modern computer keyboards should always sound. Heavy, powerful, majestic...
Majestic...YES! Something very Regal about the sound.
Yea, and deafenig to everybody in the office.

This is my dream typewriter. They are as rare as rocking horse sh*t in the UK though.
Really? They were extremely popular. These things had 80% market share. There have got to be machines there.
The memories.

I think it does not help either party. Roman sexual norms are not how we judge people today. No one should want to be lumped in with a pedophile.
