Finche’s subsequent body of work pretty much vindicates his decision-making throughout the state of flux that existed whilst Alien cubed was being shot. Nobody’s celebrating the stellar careers of suits at Fox - I hope that some of them learnt something about delegation and interference from the way that the final film came about. Great vid.
"Alien 3" is very underrated. It does a couple of flaws, but it's still pretty great in its longer version (though a few things are better in the theatrical cut, like the Queen bursting out of Ripley at the end). The characters are so well-written, with some great dialogue exchanges, and the movie looks gorgeous: the idea of going the exact opposite of the previous movies and indulge in warm colors was just great. It also has an amazing soundtrack, probably the most distinctive in the series. I think people were too harsh on it because it wasn't a shoot 'em up like "Aliens". I remember in the late-90s somebody telling me "It's bad! There's only ONE monster in the whole movie!" and I was like "Well, that's the same as the first one...".

Poorly done cgi though and they chopped the hell out of it. Can you imagine how good it would have been had they gone with the Gibson script? And speaking as someone who knows just about everything about ALIEN... you did an awesome job on this. Lots of little things I rarely hear from other youtubers. And Fincher is god. Screw Cameron. ;)

It's the first time I've known specifics about the script and shooting process. I love Alien 3 as it is, I can't wrap my head around the idea that it was made in these circumstances. If only it could be possible to go back in time and have Fincher do exactly the film he wanted... That would be incredible.
Agreed. I'm a huge fincher fan and I'd have loved to see the movie he wanted to make. It scared him away from big budget movies for a long time and almost made him go back to music video production. What a loss that would have been
Crying shame what happened... perhaps Alien and Aliens were just too damn awesome to follow up on. Maybe the only way to successfully create a third instalment would have been a sincere focus on creativity, not money. I guess we will never know.
i agree with that assessment, too much studio interference, conflicting ideas, completely profit driven without merit, they didnt know what they wanted to make.. but make it now, its gonna be a hit cause its out and we made it
I would love to see David Fincher make another Alien film where he has more creative control while subtly flipping the bird at FOX. Although that would likely never happen
Fabulous. I knew the production of this was a nightmare but JESUS. You should look into Once Upon a Time In America for video, it’s so fascinating how eviscerated that wound up being.
As long as the videos perform well I'll make more in this series but I'll be having a little break from long content for a month or two now. I've just done two 30min+ videos in quick succession
I liked Alien 3 a lot. And I am a serious Alien(s) fan. Even own a pulse rifle. The cast in Alien 3 was fantastic. Brian Glover, Charles Dance, Pete Postlethwaite etc. The special edition really adds a lot to the film. CGI was used and, back then, it wasn't too convincing. I would still always prefer a dude in a suit, like in the first 2, over CGI even now. I've listened to the Gibson full script, too. It's available here on YT. Pretty good. Alien Resurrection was absolute garbage. Fantastic video, by the way.
20:57 What do you mean by "its the only film of the series with its own individual look"? The original has a very unique aesthetic we had never seen before.
Industrial space had been done a few years before by John carpenter in dark Star. Scott refined the look and drastically improved it for alien but it wasn't new. Also I was referring to how its colour graded and lit too
@@PeakedInterest Thats what I was referring to, not that it was on space ships, but the colour and lighting, it was like a complete re-vamping of film noir aesthetic, a film that would define the 80s BUT made in the late 70s. The use of thick atmosphere. Scott was really the first to put a certain stamp on cinema with that glossy advertising-influenced take on film noir. Part of a school of "British Visual Stylists". Fincher's film, though lacking that high contrast and having its own unique muted colour palette, must also be seen as being visually dirivitive of the original Alien. For the record, I quite like the Special Edition cut of this film, its just that the third act drags on too much. Everying before that is very interesting. I actually prefer it to Aliens, because it returns to a more serious tone, pristine and perfect cinemascope attack on the subject matter. In that sense, its more true to the original.. Aliens with that goofy car looks like it was designed to sell toys. Good video overall, I had just watched all the extra features on the Alien 3 special edition... This covered much of that, but with some new angles and information they would never include. So thanks for putting it together.
If 20th century fox rekindles relationship with David Fincher, perhaps we could get a David Finchers Directors Cut of Alien 3 but that’s just wishful thinking.
Damn. Alien 3 Assembyl Cut has so many new scenes. Like the one with Golic... I completely dont understand this hate !!! The movie was supposed to be sad, dark, depressing... The first hit in the face is Newt's and Hick's death. And that's good. Because you are devastated during Newt's autopsy. The conversation with Bishop. Makes you feel really bad. Then the end. Ripley with....inside. Her death. Youre done!!! This movie is a perfect ending of saga.
I've always loved Alien 3, thought it was a perfect ending to the Ripley story. Wasn't until I got online years later I realized so many people hated it.
A lot of people hated it because it's not aliens. They just wanted more of Cameron's aliens. With a decent budget if alien 3 came out today it would be much better received
Wow! What another very interesting video. I do very much like a couple of David Fincher movies I've seen, (and in particular 'The Game'). I am very saddened he has quit Film making.
Cold and calculated criticism. Love it. Really good. Work on your audio leveling and consistency which I'm sure you thought of in the intervening 9 months.
Very much enjoyed this. I knew when I used to live in Scotland what a mightmare Alien 3 was for David Fincher. Its always put me off making films in America. That's why I prefer films in Europe or the UK. Though our industry is suffering more so now in the Uk because of bloody Hollywood.
It's a very difficult industry in which every person in the chain thinks it's "their" movie. If you ever saw the doc the death of superman lives it perfectly illustrated this problem. Also it's a great watch
@Filmmaker809 no it's called the death of superman lives and it's the development hell documentary of the movie Kevin Smith tried to get into production and was just met with ridiculous producers the whole way. It certainly reflects my experience of the industry anyway
Alien 3 is hands down my favorite Alien movie. That assembly cut is something else man. Just makes it a more cohesive piece of cinema. Although I still like the dog from the theatrical cut as the host rather than the ox from the assembly cut. I feel like critics have proven themselves as inconsequential to the perception of movies. The audience always knows. And I never hear your average Joe hating on Alien 3. Great fuckin movie, man.
@@PeakedInterest If you ever do, take your time, make it a redemption video for Fincher (Just an opinion but I trust any direction you take) this is my 7th time I’ve watched this vid, along with your other videos. Would be a shame not to have like a sequel to finchers story arc.
Alien 3 is gorgeous, it has its flaws, but this heavy nihilistic atmosphere and religious references make it much, much better than Aliens, which for me with its ideas destroyed this mysterious, miraculous figure of the Alien.
I liked the film being set in a prison, it gave a gritty quality the first two didnt have. Overall I liked it. It must be incredibly stressful to take on the project that follows the two best sci-fi films of all time. I mean how in the hell do you surpass Aliens? It did manage to provide one of the top iconic scenes of the entire series, the part where the alien and ripley are face to face, she winces and turns away in fear as it very slowly gets closer and closer and all we hear is it breathing before it retreats. You watch this almost exclusively for Sigourney who in my eyes can do no wrong and is the most versatile actress in Hollywood.
Are you insane? This video is really good and well made but you only made one of these? I went to your channel ready to binge watch like 5 more just to find out you only made this one? I watched one of your murder mystery videos but I’m not sure it holds up to this. Your style, your pace, and narration is perfect for his concept. You could dedicate your entire channel to it.
I used to make more movie videos, there's one of the same type about the crow. I get bored staying in one genre and moved away from movies, ill be moving away from crime soon too
@jrapp1468 thanks. I appreciate that. Might be worth finding my video on the crow because it's the same type of video looking at why the movie had so much trouble
I see Alien 3 as basically a polished turd of it's time which has aged well because of how well polished it is in spite of what it is. We were coming out of the 80's with some pretty massive, well fleshed films with big budgets that did well. The year before Alien 3, Terminator 2 blew audiences away and the hype and hopes for the third installment after Cameron's action masterpiece were going to be nigh impossible to meet. I like Alien 3 as my 2nd favorite in the franchise. It's flawed but there's something there that makes up for those flaws if you give it it's fair shot.
IF studio execs are so creative and love to interfere so much in the original vision of movies, why don't they don the director's hat and just directly make the god damn movies themselves?!? BUT that would mean they would get the credit AND the blame.
Okay, I have to weigh in on this. The whole Alien 3 production saga is one of the most melodramatic Hollywood behind the scenes facades of all time. Thousands of movies have gone through countless script re-writes, heavy editing and changing directors. Fincher was hired to take over for another writer/director who had been fired, Vincent Ward. HE is the man who's "vision was compromised" NOT DAVID FINCHER. Fincher didn't have "a vision", he was not the writer, he was a director for hire, and came in when the majority of the story had already been decided on by the producers. People did not like the move for those decisions that were made. You cannot blame that on the production. He was clearly VERY ungrateful to be in the director's chair, and he clashed with the producer's over money...That's it! Audiences didn't like the bleakness of the story, killing of all the major characters, and poor story continuity(the unexplained egg for example). And on that matter, I read that Fincher's response was "The audience was just never suppose to question it". I strongly object to him washing his hands of it and pretending he was wronged just because his ego got hurt. HE was a huge part of the problem. And considering he walked away from the film before editing, any complaints in that department by him are also void. There is not one single scene or element that can actually be named that he didn't get to do. There was even a story about Fox refusing him to film a scene, so he grabbed a camera himself and filmed and yes..it is even in the final film. Jesus, people. How can so many people misinterpret what actually happens? Sorry for the rant, but this was a long time coming.
As a writer, all the staffing stuff aside, your story is doomed when you kill off most of the characters you spent time getting fans to care about. It's basic human psychology. It wouldn't have mattered what they made after that, it would all have been a flop...
The fact that Fincher could take such garbage input and put together a serviceable film is commendable. I enjoy Alien 3, and while it's not as good a watch as the first two, it has its charm.
As a big fan of Alien franchise, inlcuding novels and comics I hated alien 3 when released. Now in perspective I have learned to apreciate its value. Its not my favorite, but is a good closure to the trilogy. Prometheus and coventant are not cannon for me. And Alien 4 its a funny experiment.
I want the dramatised audio series sea of sorrows River of pain and I can't remember the rest but they got hicks and nute, hicks was in 2,and Ash was still.... about....in 1. they would of been amazing I got every audio and love listening to the actual movies and the dramatised audios in order its like one massive movie with a bonus on the 3rd they wrote another short version read by Bishop 😃
Everything needs more pulse rifle! Honestly I do not know what would have made a better Alien 3. Maybe nothing should have been done with it. The egg/s and facehuggers issue always bugged me. Where did it come from? I ended up blaming Bishop for it. Many do because it is the only explanation. Colony room full of samples and Bishop being off screen and away for a significant period of time. That line of thinking though tarnishes Bishop’s character, but it does give the only explanation for where the eggs or facehuggers.
Please don't forget to like the video

The Wooden Planet script was the best idea.
Only if termites were involved and turned into aliens
Finche’s subsequent body of work pretty much vindicates his decision-making throughout the state of flux that existed whilst Alien cubed was being shot.
Nobody’s celebrating the stellar careers of suits at Fox - I hope that some of them learnt something about delegation and interference from the way that the final film came about.
Great vid.
OMG Sigourney at 15:57!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥😍😍
wow. criminally underrated channel. this shit rocks dude, keep it up
"Alien 3" is very underrated.
The crazy thing is that at the end of all this lies a pretty damn good movie, somehow
probably thanks to Fincher
and Elliot Goldenthal
Okay, Alien 3 isn’t that bad. It’s too bad the studio got involved. Alien 3 had that potential a great film.
Alien III, the Adult version of the Franchise, and the most atmospheric and intelligent.
Zero atmosphere compared to the earlier films.
Can’t tell you how many times I go back and revisit this video, once again listening to it right meow.
The mood and music inside that space monastery is unrivaled in ANY of the Alien movies, including the first one.
The problem starts at the end, with Ripley's death.
That fact, condemned economically that movie over any other.
Every premise about this movie starts with a recount of its troubles, probably because of Fincher's known frustrations about it, but if looked objectively, its evident is one of the grittier, coolest movies of the genre.
It's The Name of the Rose from outerspace.
This was my first Alien movie and will remain my favorite ever...
I am really impressed. Great work on the Video!
Thank you. I try to make sure I give full effort so the positive feedback is nice
I liked this much more than ALIENS believe it or not. The characters, the actors, the music, the cinematography, and the mood of the movie were incredible. Screw Cameron. ;)
Thank you. I treat the research portion of my videos very seriously and I fully believe there is not a piece of material about this movie that I didnt see. I like to be thorough
I agree. Though it wasn't poor CGI, it was a rod puppet. It just wasn't imposed into the movie well.
@@darkwoods1954 Not all rod puppet was it? I know close-ups were real. The running alien was rod... yeah... your right. Maybe they SHOULD have used cgi! LOL
@@Alienmojo I think the only CGI moment was when the Aliens head cracks. CGI to clean up around the edges of the rod puppet would make a lot of difference.
@@PeakedInterestSorry, but you left out the biggest behind-the-scenes piece. Rex Pickett.
I've always thought Alien 3 was a great ending to the Ripley story. Especially if you amalgamate the theatrical and extended cuts of the film.
Good video. I enjoyed all the interesting details.
A pity that the David version can never be assembled
Your assesment of Alien Resurrection and it pissing on the series' legacy is spot on and hilarious😂.
Great video man. Can't stop laughing at the whippet though 😅
I guess we will never know.
i agree with that assessment, too much studio interference, conflicting ideas, completely profit driven without merit, they didnt know what they wanted to make.. but make it now, its gonna be a hit cause its out and we made it
I think if they'd just let people do their job and stop dipping their fingers in the cookpot maybe it would have been good
I would love to see David Fincher make another Alien film where he has more creative control while subtly flipping the bird at FOX. Although that would likely never happen
Be cool if he came back to recut the film, maybe film more of what he wanted originally. Maybe someday
Thanks. Totally agree with everything you said. The first version of the script is the best one. Didn't care for any of the revisions at all
I remember Alien 3 as different from it's predecessors and still a great movie!
No problem at all, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I think that's fair what you said about the revised film noir look of alien.
21:28 I'm happy that a Lannister approves 👌
Wow! What another very interesting video. I do very much like a couple of David Fincher movies I've seen, (and in particular 'The Game'). I am very saddened he has quit Film making.
Thank you. I'm a huge David fincher fan and it probably shows in my defence of the movie.
@@PeakedInterest Thanks man. Death of Superman? Is it something to do with Superman with Christopher Reeve?
@Filmmaker809 no it's called the death of superman lives and it's the development hell documentary of the movie Kevin Smith tried to get into production and was just met with ridiculous producers the whole way. It certainly reflects my experience of the industry anyway
@@PeakedInterest Thank you so much. Love Kevin Smith.
@Filmmaker809 me too. Genuinely worth a watch. Really good doc.
It made me want to riot when I saw it on the day it was released...
FIncher done a great job, i really like alien3
Alec Baldwin...that went so wrong. Looking back to find your shows. LOVE all you do.
This explains a lot abut why this movie was so much less than the others in so many ways.
So good. Thank you!
And despite it all, Fincher made a very good movie.
I don’t dislike none of the Aliens films love them all…
That's the spirit! You seen Romulus?
@@PeakedInterest not yet looking forward on watching it..
@dennyperez3872 it's a decent movie. Sits between 3 and resurrection for me
Hey! Happy holidays, are you ever planning on doing a video on fincher’s comeback? Would love a video of him doing Seven.
Se7en is my all time favourite movie. I'm a bit scared to make a video on it 😅
@@PeakedInterest If you ever do, take your time, make it a redemption video for Fincher (Just an opinion but I trust any direction you take) this is my 7th time I’ve watched this vid, along with your other videos. Would be a shame not to have like a sequel to finchers story arc.
Well, apparently you can also blame Sigourney "No Guns, Clone Me" Weaver too for ruining it...
Nah
Fox Studios is Weyland-Yutani.
“Crew Expendable.”
damn this is quality content and great editing!
Anchorpoint would have been much cooler than what we eventually got.
I agree there could have been better concepts but a rehash of aliens would have been pointless really. Nobody is outdoing Cameron there
Alien 3 is gorgeous, it has its flaws, but this heavy nihilistic atmosphere and religious references make it much, much better than Aliens, which for me with its ideas destroyed this mysterious, miraculous figure of the Alien.
This is the reason why Fincher is kind of annoyed by studios like marvel .he despises studio interference
I think that's pretty accurate. I don't think he'd be too impressed with their extremely tight schedules either
Amazing video nice job
Thank you. I put a lot of time and effort into my videos so it's nice to hear that's reflected in the final product.
Good info
Let Fincher finish it
Are you insane? This video is really good and well made but you only made one of these? I went to your channel ready to binge watch like 5 more just to find out you only made this one? I watched one of your murder mystery videos but I’m not sure it holds up to this. Your style, your pace, and narration is perfect for his concept. You could dedicate your entire channel to it.
I used to make more movie videos, there's one of the same type about the crow. I get bored staying in one genre and moved away from movies, ill be moving away from crime soon too
@@PeakedInterest Gotcha. For what it’s worth I thought this was really well done.
@jrapp1468 thanks. I appreciate that. Might be worth finding my video on the crow because it's the same type of video looking at why the movie had so much trouble
Wait, 4700 views for such a quality video ? I guess youtube algorythm isn't giving you the fame you deserve
My favorite Alien movie. Hope Fincher will come back someday and recut the film.
I actually watched the assembly cut last night. It's about as close as we will ever get to his actual movie. It's a huge improvment on theatrical
Somehow, It's still good. And the music of Elliot Goldenthal is among the best sci-fi scores.
I enjoy alien 3 for what we got
Poor Finchy! Sounds like a really crappy time
Alien 3 is my preferred movie of the trilogy.
The best closure to the Alien trilogy…
until resurrection and other movies related to it destroyed it
IF studio execs are so creative and love to interfere so much in the original vision of movies,
why don't they don the director's hat and just directly make the god damn movies themselves?!?
BUT that would mean they would get the credit AND the blame.
As a kid, Alien 3 was my favorite one.
First sensible and accurate response I have read. London film industry was awash with reports of his behaviour at the time.
The fact that Fincher could take such garbage input and put together a serviceable film is commendable. I enjoy Alien 3, and while it's not as good a watch as the first two, it has its charm.
alien 3 rocked.more scary than aliens.
I like 1 2 and 3
@@PeakedInterest 1 is my favourite
I fell asleep during 3.
In the theater.
I've seen scarier stuff in the back of my fridge.
@leesheppard6043 there's always one....
Everyone has their preferences. I didn't find it scary either but I do enjoy the movie.
I didn't know Fincher directed Aliens 3.
Actually the first two films were nominated for visual effects
You're right, aliens even has it's own funny story about the nomination too.
Say man, that was real cool.
Thank You.
Thank you for taking the time to watch
It never occurred to all these studio apes that Aliens was the end of the franchise.
Anything for a dollar.
He is a franchise killer. Both for Alien and Star Wars.
Weaver clause: "No guns"
Patrick Stewart Clause: "No TNG cast"
Whenever actors get involved in the creative process, they wreck things.
😂
I want the dramatised audio series sea of sorrows River of pain and I can't remember the rest but they got hicks and nute, hicks was in 2,and Ash was still.... about....in 1. they would of been amazing I got every audio and love listening to the actual movies and the dramatised audios in order its like one massive movie with a bonus on the 3rd they wrote another short version read by Bishop 😃
Alien 3 is my favorite. Followed by Alien then Aliens and then Alien Resurrection.
Aliens did paint bishop as shifty at times. I always felt that was a misstep by Cameron
@@PeakedInterest it's a red herring, a deliberate technique that gives his arc in Aliens more impact.
It was an emergency egg layed by the Queen inside the Drop Ship undercarriage. Thought everyone knew this by now, apparently not.
I like his movies but was never keen on his screenplay
Which screenplay lol there are about 17 different versions just that I read
Better than nolan
I think fincher is better than Nolan in every way.
@@PeakedInterest technically better that's for sure.
