    I don’t think they are a waste of time at all. To your point earlier in the video, if it gets you excited again about your camera, your footage, your accessories - if it gives you a motivation to film then it’s a great investment. For me, it made sense and it improved my want to film. But, as you said, every person needs to figure out his or her own use case. For some it might not make sense to build a rig. For me, it definitely did.

    Not only a fun activity, it does pay for itself in situations like weddings and Eulogy recording, and people simply go "wow" when they see a rig like this. Plus, if you are into the art of photography and video, it is just a joy to learn and experiment with the innumerable possibilities on offer, which with technology on the move, is constantly changing and channelling.
    Great video, I've subscribed, and very much learning from it.

    Building rigs is super fun, but one thing keeps bringing me back to cine-style bodies like the FX6 - built in ND filters.

      built in ND's are lovely, the c200 has been a favorite of mine for a long time, kinda outdated now but it was my work horse for years!

      @jmcclure It's pretty neat that we have so many great options available, and even older cameras like the C200 or even the C100 can still be relevant. Another thing to consider is that so many factors matter more than camera choice. That said, I'm driving myself crazy trying to decide which camera to buy for a new project.

    Built my FX30 out as an ENG rig with EVF and SDI outputs. It means as well as all my other corporate clients I can use it for broadcast News and Doco work in a way that fits their workflow... it means I paid everything off, rig, tripod, camera, lenses, radio mic's and lights, in 3 months.

    I think for my camera (xs10) this even improves the filming. an external recorder would help me shoot in 10 bit 4:2:2.
    external battery would let me shoot all day without anxiety.
    an ssd would let me shoot for longer hours and also be quicker to switch i think
    ofc as you said, do this only after you have the lenses and have the skills that have exceeded the camera's capabilities

    i 100% completely agree with your 1st opinion
    since i'm coming from PC builder enthusiasm (sometimes making money from it) + some model plastic toy that need to build from scratch
    seeing i can do same on my another hobby in this case Photography , Videography etc. made me feel satisfied.
    also i had confidence on charge money on client.
    downside, when i shoot on street i need to chop off everything to avoid "authority" people come and ask for legal permission lol

    The biggest misconception that the TH-cam filmmaking ecosystem buys into is the idea that clients care about the rig. In my experience on film sets and in working with corporate clients, the camera is the least impactful piece of tech on set. 9/10 the boom is the item that makes the client go, "Ooooo!" lol! Having said that, I LOVE rigging out my camera and doing so for as cheap as possible. Great video, mate! ❤

    • @thomasjmcclure
      @thomasjmcclure  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it’s a combination of all the things. A boom is always an exciting one, or a good lighting rig.

    • @filmandframeca
      @filmandframeca 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think on film sets where the expectations are much higher a rigged out camera may not be as exciting.
      However, dealing with local business or events/weddings most of them are probably more so used to the look of your regular mirrorless camera. When rigged out it probably makes them more confident that you are not just an amateur. Great to start convos too!
      I can definitely understand why the boom would be the thing to impress clients. I think with the average clientele I mentioned, a C-stand and a light will immediately make you a pro in their eyes 😂

    • @Kadehr
      @Kadehr 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      100% correct! 99% of the clients don't give a poop at the camera rig. And you can't charge more if you have a camera rig, but a "real" cinema camera (big body camera)
      I'm wondering when this mirrorless rig fantasy will end lol

    New media production guy here that just started not long ago... NEVER a waste of time by any means. I couldn't get past $100 not having one and despite it looks awesome, it simply unlocks soooo much more that you didn't know you could do or even had. My early videos sucked! Building my rig yes didn't change quality but it sure as hell motivated me to go harder and now my videos don't suck and I'm actually close to closing a $2,500 DIRECT CLIENT video deal because of what I got. Guess what, I don't own an FX3 or 9 or any overly used word "cine" camera. I have a Sony A7Rii that can shoot like a some b**tc and really holds it own. LENSES as you mentioned makes the bank. Also just the fact of having my rig I still use it for photography, it's ben keeping the cheapskates from contacting me for influencer exchange crap and such. If rigs was crack, totally call me a righead I love seeing different builds and stuff.

    You can buy bits and bobs that will improve your work ie a good monitor/phone with monitor plus app, makes a massive difference to performance. A quick release handle to alleviate the shake, usb powerbank with a small rig holder will stop you from searching in your bag all the time for batteries. All those things are relatively cheap and will improve your work definitely. The cage allows you to put a rifle mic then you can just use the hotshoe mount to keep your wireless receiver. All of those things ive mentioned will make you a more efficient and better videographer

  • @agentromanoff5141
    @agentromanoff5141 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I’d say its not necessary to buy entire set up all at once, its better to prioritise most useful component in the rig and build one by one, first thing I bought was the cage, then a top handle, and then a monitor, now planning to buy the vmount battery and base plate.

    I can understand why you enjoy building up a rig for a camera. Personally, I just want what it takes to get a job done. Usually it doesn't involving a rig. I am more interested in having a camera that has a low chance of failure. If a failure does occur, I have the gear to ensure I can recover from a failure. I keep spares of everything in my bag. Guess my hobby would be redundancy ...haha. Enjoyed your production, was interesting to see all of that gear being used, I never would have the opportunity to do that. Cheers.

    Hi Thomas! Hope you're doing well. I'm looking to buy my first FF camera and was hoping you could help me out, if it's not too much trouble. I was thinking of the Sony A7 III, but I stumbled onto a video of yours advising to go directly for the A7 C. My hesitation with the 7C is the dual slot for the memory card, do you think it's worth to "downgrade" with the 7III for that reason? Also, you recommended the 6700, and kind of the same question, do you think it's worth "giving up" the FF?
    I was looking for a hybrid camera, since I mostly like shooting video but will probably need photography for work as well.
    What I was thinking is buying the a7III and some good lenses (recommendations appreciated), but wanted some external opinion (from anyone reading this comment).
    Thanks!!
    PS. Ideally I would buy the A7 IV, but I think it's too far out of my price range

    • @thomasjmcclure
      @thomasjmcclure  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      good questions! the a7c and a7iii are basically the same camera, i prefer the form factor of the a7c, and its just a touch cheaper. although used a7iii's have become a lot cheaper too. if you think the a7iii would be better for you than the a7c then go for it!
      I do think the a6700 is going to give you a better image for video than the a7iii, 10bit color, better ibis, better colors, 4k slo mo etc. but it only has 1 card slot and if you really want a "full frame look" then id look full frame.
      depending on your budget, you may be able to snag a good deal on a used a7iv, it may take a while and a bit of hunting, but sometimes they go for a decent price.
      No camera is a bad camera these days. you just gotta get the best one for you

    Zcam is an option as a cinema camera, considering you can mount e mount lenses. Every attachment on a camera should serve a purpose. Add things to your camera to solve a problem. Some people like aesthetically pleasing things and that's ok too. Only you as the individual will know what works for you.
