  • I caught my crickets mating. I caught the cricket mating process from the cricket mating call, the mating itself, and what happened after.
On a Facebook Reel, I shared how crickets got into my indoor garden. I caught them but since I caught them making cricket noises, they're both male crickets.
When we went to Al Mojerma, I caught a female one. And as soon as I joined her with the male crickets, mating ensued immediately.
Here's a link to the Facebool version of this short clip.

Fall field cricket aka Gryllus pennsylvanicus found in the U.S. can be easily be bred in captivity. All you need is a 10 20 gallon terrarium filled with bio active substrate. This is basically damp not wet organic soil if possible. Add at least 2 3 inches deep substrate to tank. You can add some mulch and places for crickets to hide in. One can add some compact live plants or seeds. Let the tanks settle for a few days.If possible let live plants acclimate or seeds germinate. After that go out and find some live field crickets. Best time is between July/September especially in the Northern part of U.S. Don't overcrowd your new pets. Make sure you get an even number of males to females. You can start with two to six individuals. Once you release them into their new home they will settle in. The males will establish their own small territory and chirp to attract female and keep other males at bay. Eventually they will mate and you can observe the females stabbing the soil with their needle like ovipositor. They don't sting by the way. They will eventually die of cold or old age. If possible keep the terrarium in a cold space throughout the winter. The eggs will take a long time to hatch os have patience they need to hibernate. Do not leave your pets in long term direct sunlight. The first tiny baby crickets or nymphs will appear late May thru June. At first you won't notice much but as the weeks progress you'll notice them more as they grow and more will be visible. Eventually you will have separate them you can use them as feeders. Let the left overs live their life cycle and next summer you'll have another generation. Think of the money you can save on feeder insects. Field crickets are omnivores they will eat some plants, fruits and some dead or dying insects. They will eat each other if given the chance. It's a buggy bug world. This would make an excellent science project or just as a hobby.

I started in 2008 and had generations for at least six years straight. This summer I collected a male and female.Same technique. Let's see what happens next year. Funny coincidence my name is Noel as well. 🤣👍@@NoelCabacungan
