Galfond Breaks Down INSANE $150,000 BLUFF Vs Businessman W/ Phil Galfond

- Phil Galfond joins me to go over a hand he played on High Stakes Poker against recreational player Bill Klein. This is the most/best Texas Hold'em poker strategy maybe EVER on my channel. We recorded a few Pot Limit Omaha videos and also this Texas No Limit Hold'em hand. I find this hand fascinating for a few different reasons. If this hand is played standard by the three players involved, it probably never goes down like this. Most of the time it will go - check to Phil who continuation bets and then two calls. The turn probably goes - check to Phil who bets the turn, then Klein might check/call with his flush draw/straight draw. When the river pairs, Phil can still have full houses/trips in his range and Klein most likely would not have bluffed. As played, Phil's hand looks very much like the nut straight and this river leaves the door open for Klein to make a move! I find it incredible how you can change one detail of a hand, in this instance the initial lead + raise by Klein, and it can result in something we rarely get to see happen.

Galfond is so collected in his words. Each sentence is bursting with wisdom. Such a crusher!
Poker aside, Galfond strikes me as a guy with a 160+ IQ. I hope he doesn't kill himself, he's my hero.
Bill Waterson nothing to worry about. His high IQ is balanced between self aware emotional intelligence and raw logic. People like that don't crack or do crack, because they always have an inner dialogue going for them.

What an f-ing boss! Not just Bill Klein (his play was awesome), but I’m talking about Phil Galfond and the way he handled getting bluffed out of a huge pot while televised. Handled it with such class and even said he was happy to be a part of such an entertaining hand. Class act poker pro.

Thank you Phil. I've always struggled with live play and the fact you can't see how much is in the pot easily and how much you should bet etc, I always wondered if it was a common problem and I'm glad you talked about that. I guess it just takes more live experience?

Dwan offering the HU challenge to anyone but Phil Galfond must have done wonders for his image too. I was just getting into Poker and had never heard of Galfond but when I heard that I was like "Oh, shit. That dude must literally be the best player in the world."

I think it was more that Dwan and Galfond were really good friends. Dwans ego is too big to not include someone out of fear.

There's a HUGE factor being overlooked in this analysis. The game is commentated by Norm MacDonald. The implied odds of having Norm MacDonald announce your awesome play is 100% every single time. The money is irrelevant.
Norm MacDonald was really bad in "High Stakes Poker". And I'm not even comparing him to Gabe Kaplan.

I thought Phil was a donkey for folding when it aired, but now re-watching it (with many years of playing under my belt) I fold there 100% of the time, too. Hell of a bluff by the business man.

Joe, I'd be curious to know if there would be a combination of Q10 Phil would call there. All the math aside, I think you make the call all day with a q10 suited hand? Thoughts? I didn't pick up that point in the pod. I only say this because a guy like Klein makes that bluff all the time. Missed flush draw fake the boat is a very common play.
I'm a simple man, I see Galfond I click and listen.
Preflop is almost irrelevant because the raise was so small for being so deep that the BB and UTG straddle are going to play a lot of hands against Phil who admitted he was opening wide.In order or possibility I would give the boated hands J9,22,J2,,99,JJ,KK (discounting 99, JJ and KK because I think they would be 3bets pre a large percentage of the time, but still possible).
Looking back at the hand it's possible a recreational player might make a value raise on the flop in Klein's position the same with JJ,J9,22,J2,99,AJ,KJ,QQ, KK, AA and "bluffs" combo draws 8Tss, KTss and possibly Axss, some baby FDs and QT. Not sure if TT would raise here but I see it often for players to "find out where they are" at lower levels. Klein would flat sometimes with sets and two pair hands, but more likely he would flat with JJ and 99 than 22,J9 or J2. Phil's flat on the flop is perfect and gets Croak along which improves the pot for the OESD and leaves the option to fold to a 3bet/4bet situation.
Klein's turn lead is small (~1/3 PSB) so it's hard to gather too much info on it - but it is in to two people. It almost seems like a blocker bet or from a rec a "please call me" bet. But in terms of hands that improved you obviously have KK and KJ but also combo draws like 8Tss,KTss, AKss and ATss along with QT and hands that picked up a gutter like QQ and TT.
Phils sizing mistake on the turn here is huge because even the hands that made the blocker bet such as combo draws and two pairs have odds to make the call to improve on the river to a five card hand. It also looks like a spot where Phil can't have too many bluffs because he has two people behind to act. If I were Bill I would range his value hands at QT, KK, JJ and possibly KTss and KJ, but heavily weighted towards QT - but it's also possible Phil could have AA at this point and definitely could have AKss.
Given the river and the way the hand was played Klein made a great bluff. Phil's hands are weighted heavily towards QT, Kxss and Axss. More importantly postflop Klein was very aggressive. Klein raised the flop and lead the turn. Klein knows that his hand looks strong and he also knows that he can't win without putting in the last barrel. Add in all of the allure of making a big bluff against a poker internet pro on TV and how could he resist? Perfect spot for the three barrel. If he gets called he knows that it brings him a ton of action in the future!
I'd be interested to find out what Klein's read was of Phil and if he was putting in the third barrel on many other rivers.

Would deff have preferred a larger turn sizing as well, not sure if Bill would still ship it on river if he saw a much higher strength from Phil on turn. Interesting hand for sure, I'd fold too with no given history on Bill. Congrats on the tourney you recently binked Phil.

It's funny how most recreational players are not using this strategy ever, but it's the best bluffs they have in their arsenal. Every single regular have faced this situation where the 4 to a straight comes on the river and said out loud "just donk bet shove, so I can fold this set -_-".

Tell me why at the end when he says “the only reason I did it was because there was a 9” and Doyle is concurs...is it because pocket 9’s and jack 9 and hands that would fit bills range given circumstances of the hand?
Bill had mentioned at another point in this episode that 9s are lucky for him that and likes playing them; he would have expected that Phil remembered and then weighed 99 as a more likely part of his range.
That is a "sounds crazy, but you have to" fold.
It is obviously a good play by Klein, and no question Galfond has to fold. i am just wondering if Klein is betting the river just because he did not hit, so he has to bet. Or he is processing deeper things like 'you can never have a full house, but i can'. Cos that will make a big difference on how good Klein is.
He played it like J9 22 99 JK. Thats 13 combos( J9s ) great odds of calling turn. Im pretty sure that he is aware he can lead bluff a paired board in River, or a spade for value. Thats almost 19!! cards.. his pot size river bluff should mainly contain combos either combos with Ten of spades.( Best card.to bluff with as it blocks straights QTo QsTs. ) Holding 6 plays also a small role here unblocking 9T 98 97 for galf. So if you are looking for 6-7 bluffs combos for a 2:1 value to bluff ratio ( as the odds od calling) you need to add Ts8s-Ts6s Qs8s-Qs6s . I think.this range construction if fair enough.
Galf holding Qs played s significant role to his fols as he blocks a lot ofcombo draws for his opponent that miss the river. Without Qs i guess this might be a close call.

Only way Phil can reason a call out of it is if he thinks about how if Bill is obviously repping a full-house by betting $150k and is aware his image is OMC he should never expect a call -> must be a bluff.

What’s the big relevance of there being a 9 on the board that Klein and Brunson reference that made the bluff so much stronger?
They play a side game where if you bluff the river with a 9 in your hand or on the board and get it trough, you win money from all other at the table. Like 5k each or something (other exampel of game is the T2o/doyle one where you win with it or bluff with it you collect.
lol - at 14:38, Phil says "I don't want the river to be a Q of spades" and Joe points out that he has the Q of spades in his hand. Phil then corrects himself and says "Ten of spades"... which happens to be in Klein's hand. =)

This is an easy fold (assuming you're playing deep stack, and you're not pot committed.) EVERY ACTION Klein made signaled serious strength. Also, This is actually a VERY GOOD example of how well-timed aggression can be the single-most powerful tool in a poker-players arsenal. If Klein check-calls flop & turn (like many players WOULD) then this bluff MIGHT not have went thru...I can't TELL you how many times I've called huge bluffs after a flush-draw bricked-out.

Galfond is a much better player than me.. but I still think if he read his opponent for a set why did he only raise to 67k on turn? Why not 80-120k with a more pot sized raise? He must have really believed he had a set as he priced a flush draw in with that amount for an easy call. Edit: He corrected that in video and said he should have raised more. Phil is great player!

Either hes bluffing or has a full house when it comes to calling that riverbet or not. Its one sentence on that one. Preflop and turn, he had straddled so he would be calling a preflopraise like that with any hand being Klein. So narrow it down, two small spades, like he had, comes in to mind, result bluff on river. Two pair like K9 is possible in that thinking line. Bet on flop if you believe it is in that thinking line. Turn, that bet and then the raise gets a call. I dont know how big of an amateur Klein is but he just called the raise. To a pro vs an Klein maybe a hint of a draw hand? If you add it all up, straddle, con bet, bet, raise call....well then the raise call is more likely to be a bluff and therefore call with a made hand like that. But its easy behind this screen, sitting there in that setting with this kind of money....we all should not judge a decision like that

Why is Phil even thinking about it on the river if he was so confident Klein had 2 pair starting on the flop and especially on the turn? It seems like an clear snapfold on the river with QT given the reads and the logic of the hand.

AA or QQ would have check/called - no way he turns this into a bluff with a 150k bet...the only thing that is left is some sort of busted draw.
So which busted draw would he have raised pre? AsKs? That would have check/called after hitting the K on the turn..which leaves AsQs or KsQs...but Galfond has the Qs in his hand! So there's really only the A-rag or the any-two-spades-because-what-the-hell-combo left...and back when this was played raising with that type of hand was extremely uncommon.

Probably not. Doug plays super GTO and relies heavily on blockers to make his decisions. The Q spade is probably even worse than having the 10 of spades (only worse combination being Q10 of spades)... there really aren’t that many combinations of bluffs and that’s assuming he bluffs here a lot. Remember it’s like an 80% pot bet. Gotta be good there a lot. His value range is any set rivered full house and all J9, KJ, and maybe Q10 once in a blue moon. His bluffs when we hold the Q of spade are basically only 107 of spades, 108 of spades, and A10 of spades. Maybe some pair + spade combos that turn their hand into a bluff but again, that’s not happening much.
I think Doug would come to the conclusion that you have to call with Q10 without a spade and fold with it.
It's not 2 cards Omaha Joey. 2 card Omaha means that you have to use both cards and 3 from the board.

How can you put the guy on everything BUT a flush draw.. It should have been one of the first things that come to mind, (a busted flush draw).. Klein knew that Galphond would stereotype himself as being a tight old guy, which is why Klein made the big bluff in the first place.(in my opinion).

Bad donk, if Klein really has boat, why wouldn't he wait for Phil to bluff/value-bet himself since he's raising the turn.
He most likely puts Galfond on Q10. Everything in Phil's play points to that hand. With a set or J9 he definately should raise the flop and don't let two players get there on the turn. With this in my mind trappning with a house in the river is just not gonna work because Galfond will just check behind.
Galfond bluffing in this hand is not so likely.

I'll save you the 26 minutes: Galfond incorrectly stereotyped Klein as an older, tight player so when he made the big bet on the river, he thought he had the nuts.
