- "Song for Jimi" was done as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix on the Tenth Anniversary of his death in 1980. Phil Lynott got back together with Eric Bell to record the track. Brian Downey played the drums on the track, essentially reforming Mk. 1 Thin Lizzy. Enjoy!

Downey could certainly play this. He is a monster drummer when he wants to be.
What the hell does that mean ??...he’s a monster Drummer !,..end of story !!!
Great Downy ‘jazz touch’ drumming
WOW! Never heard this one before!
Great vibe.
PEACE
Sorry I'm late to the party, but listening to the drum fills on the end, that's Brian Downey (The Man) they're basically a different variation of the fills he did on "Bad Reputation" Great song! Thanx for sharing this
I was just listening to this song on the fourh disc of the mega album (Kings, warriors, vagabonds, Angels) When I realized I reconized the lyrics from Jimi Hendrix. I was so thrilled to see it was actually a tribute to the man himself. Made the album even more awesome.
Downey on drums and Nauseef on cow bell.
The track is an absolute belter
🍀Fucking awesome tune, I first bought this record single on a Flexi-Pop Disc.from some Rock & Roll record magazine @Mod Langs Records in Berkeley, the second time I bought this song was on a cd series entitled "Phil Lynott The Man & His Music" from the same record store & the third time was in this official cd boxed set!🤘
Great to hear this song again. Badass!!!!!!!! 🤘😠💪
The best simple 👌
this is a really cool song. I didn't care for it at the first listen, but I really like it now...
I have this song on an orange flexi disc that came in an old magazine with 3 other bands.
Eric Bell, Philo was AWESOME!!!!!
Belle hommage à Jimi....
Such as shame this version on the box set is missing Eric Bell's lead guitar, because he rips this song up on the original flexi disc!
Yep. I have a copy of the original flexi disc single that this came on and Eric Bell plays some killer lead guitar licks throughout the song, including a lengthy solo in the middle (starting around the part where Phil says, "Lead on, brother..." all the way through to the next chorus, where he keeps going in the background). Just about every break in the lyrics features him soloing on the original recording. All that's completely missing from this version.
Yes, that version is class! It's on YT if you search for it
Salaam Hakarat Hyaat Alsuwd Muhima! Swart Lewens Maak Saak! ❤
The lizzy boys 🤌🤟
PHIL COULD SOUND LIKE JIMI
Downey Downey Downey
Credits. As Lynottfan4 says below. Peter Neilsen's Thin Lizzy Guide says the same thing. I'm just going by what I see elsewhere. I'm not a drummer so I don't really pick up on drum styles unless its blatantly obvious.
I've never heard the flexi disc version, but it's on the Philip: The Man and his Music 7 disc bootleg set. I'll have to see if I can get that track and listen to it.
Yes, that version is class! It's on YT if you search for it
Its Downey !!!!!
Been listening to Lizzy from the early Stuff to the End but never heard this its dam good love the drumming. Could be Cozy 😂
As to whether it's Nauseef or Downey: listen to the fills on some of the later Lizzy records, which are closer date-wise to when this song was recorded -- especially "Romeo and the Lonely Girl"...sounds like Downey to me, even down to the tone of the snare.
@DeluxeReissue released in 81. recorded in 80
and one more thing ( this is just because I wanted to say this ) HELL THAT COULD BE FUCKING MITCH MITCHELL PLAYING THE DAMN DRUMS FOR ALL WE KNOW LITSEN TO THAT CRAZYNESS WHO EVER IS PLAYING IS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!
Nauseef cloning Downey. Busy and in the moment. Sweet. Nauseef could never do bad reputation and Downey could never do this. And we are lucky to be listening.
If he emails back, be sure to let us all know.
blacksabfan si is this definitely Brian Downey on drums ?
Thin Lizzy first line for Sure!!!!! E.B.!!!!!!
im the biggest thin lizzy fan in the world..theyres no disputing that..( -:
Um, I'm not sure. I know him and Lynott redid "Dublin" around the same time...someone else probably knows better than I do.

No offense, but Bell had said that Downey played drums on this, so why is it so hard to believe that a drummer with Downey's skill could play something that sounds similar to Nauseef's style? I'm not trying to get into an argument, I'm just going by what I've seen and heard and I don't really have any reason to doubt that information. I'm not a drummer, but is drumming really THAT different when you talk about professionals? I thought good drummers would drum to what the song called for.
Instead of money, why doesn't someone show me physical or written proof? It's all I've asked for from day one.
Again, not saying you're wrong. But the credits say it was Downey. Are they wrong? Maybe, but I've never seen anything to confirm that this is Nauseef instead.
I wonder if Mr. Downey was thinking Mitch Mitchell when he recorded this one.
i think hes probably trying to imitate mitch mitchell. neat song!
Saw Songs for while I'm away documentary movie, was amazing, the trailer, ah heheeheee, I'm broke & have no money to rent it yet, lol, well maybe for Christmas Day?!
I believe this was an outtake from Lynott's second solo album sessions, just compare the drum sound and drumming style to "Gino" where Nauseef also plays.
The credit on the boxset might be a mistake, those liner notes look like they have been done in a hurry! Anyway, it's Nauseef, if you ask me.
Wasn't Midge Ure involved with this release ?
And if all the hippies cut off all their hair........
I don't know who this nauseef guy is but is he the guy I saw filling in for Downey at 1 of those, Melbourne shows they took video of?
Yes.
Thanks for the answer. Why was Downey needing a fill-in. Did he injure himself or something?
I've always thought that the drumming was adventurous, ala Nauseef. It would be very interesting if it turned out to be nauseef.
Also, if the few of you think so much that this is Mark Nauseef, how come you're not really proving it? I'd love to see a legitimate article or an interview that claims he was the drummer on this track.
It was Brian Downey...www.trcjt.ca/ab950/lizzy/jimi.html. There is a different version as Track #7 of Disc 4 of the Vagabonds Kings Warriors Angels boxset.
First issued as a flexi disc in Flexipop Magazine, summer 1981.
Recorded Summer 1981 by the original line-up (Lynott, Downey & Bell)
the drummer is......(drum roll , er pleeze)
Mark Downey !!! ....love child of downey/nauseef ......sorted
That was funny 😎
Mark nausseef superbatteur
This is downey
sorry (up-date) Brian nausseef .
Can we just calm down and enjoy the song... so what it's a little misunderstanding plus both Downey and Nauseef are good enough to play this and who cares really who played on it, thats all just trivial stuff, it's a tribute for Jimi's sake man enjoy it.
It's Mark Nauseef on drums. Listen to him on Talk In 79 (Solo In Soho) and Gino (The Philip Lynott Album) and you'll notice the similarity. Downey's a great drummer, but this isn't him.
It sounds like Nauseef. Especially the way he does those Hi-hat accents. He does those a lot.

I think you are right ! That sounds much more like Nauseef...Downey was never that crisp...watch nauseef with Lizzy in Sydney 1978 or on G Force.
Dave Grohl played drums on this one !!!!
Hahahaha
