I love it when Wayne turns around at 1:01 and 10:10 to acknowledge the guitar lick. I saw Bergeron, DiBlasio, and Wiest backed up by the One O'clock Lab Band a few years ago at the opening of the Sherman Jazz Museum. Phenomenal players and performance. Thanks for posting these videos!!
Excellent band, great performance - whoever was in charge of production had their head up their wazoo. Apparently the sound was coming off the camera instead of the board.
I'm guessing they didn't even record the sound, and were just using the board for the live mix. Who knows... but I agree with you, that's some music video 101 stuff.
It’s a shame that they didn’t use the board audio for this and used the audio from the camera instead. Would have been great to hear the whole tenor solo, but all I could hear was drums for most of it
If you want to hear a much better version of this song with Wayne Bergeron as the guest soloist, give a listen to him playing with the Wheeling HS Jazz Band at the Midwest Clinic in the Grand Ballroom of McCormick Place in Chicago. 1700 people crowded into a room with seating for 1000 to hear this band. The video itself is of poor quality, but the sound is great!!
I think the tenor solo was good...I couldn't hear most of it because the drummer was "chopping trees down" during it.....I know this is a negative comment, but it is how I felt....just being honest....
I don't know if it's just me but when Maynard played this song the audience reaction was strongly enthusiastic and even joyous, whether you were a trumpet player or not. When Wayne plays it the reaction is, well ok, that was nice, he was trying hard and did a reasonably good job. It's like watching someone who is just mechanically producing notes (Wayne) vs watching someone who is moving you musically (Maynard). I see a tremendous difference between the two players. One I want to hear more of the other I don't care if I hear any more of. One is a musician the other is not.
Bradley Saunders it’s the same arrangement. Maynard changed certain parts of the chart to make it more interesting, depending who he had in the band at the time.
Wasn't necessarily the drummer's fault. Looks looks like they had a terrible Mic/Audio setup. Bergeron's MIc was too hot, drowning out the band backgrounds.
WB slots the High A with the first valve This what I have to do. Either that or play it with a slight half valve pressed down. The note is so high you can't hear the funky tone from the half valve. Young trumpet section that needs breathing lessons. Tad struggled in some areas they ought to have nailed..Kids are gifted. I sense some with mouthpieces TOO LARGE for this work. Liked WB's ad lib solo if not his tendency to over articulate. Slur jazz Wayne. Hey you're better than me for sure BUT
+Linebacker40_1 agreed. I had the opportunity one to hear Maynard play in Seattle with a bunch of UNT alums. While it was a thrill to hear Maynard perform his calisthenics in the stratosphere, it was the band that he assembled that was the real show. I could listen to these guys with Wayne up front all day long! Don't get me wrong, Maynard was a star in his own right, just think Wayne is much more versatile and actually more enjoyable to listen to. Just one person's opinion.
***** Sorry, all due respect and all that, but while not perfect, and I personally saw him on a few off nights, Maynard was as close to the total package as ever held a trumpet. Mendez probably had better technique, Doc has better consistency, all the emulators were better at 20 than Maynard was at 70, yeah I get it. However, in his prime on the Roulette recordings, nobody before or after could touch him as the consummate trumpet player. Improvisation, tone, intonation, and range, oh my word, RANGE! Not only could he do it, he could do it with expression, control, emphasis, and feeling. It is one thing to play altissimo, it is another to do it as simply an extension of musicality.
Sorry, but nobody has ever sounded close to Maynard, when he was in his prime. His sound, his interpretation and the emotion was so all captivating, to say nothing about his powerful secure, consistent, range and endurance. Maynard set the bar for playing above high C into the stratosphere in a musical fashion, at a level that I've never heard anyone else approach. It wasn't just about playing high, it was about making music.
I'm sorry, but that drummer just completely ruined the arrangement. It sounded like any off-the-street Guitar Center drummer. Just sad to hear that at something of this level...
the drummer ruined the sax solo by playing over it. i played in big bands for 25 + years. i know what i am saying. full of divas and egos these bands always are.
Thanks for posting these videos!!
wayne you gave me goosebumps!!! fantastic horn chops!!! maynard is smiling!!!
Sooo honored to have him come to play with my high school jazz band this coming May along with Rusty Higgins.
Great playing
Maynard would be proud.
Talked with Wayne over email a few times. Very nice guy
Just saw Wayne at Temple College last night. Best Jazz Concert I have ever and probably will ever see. He is crazy.
Great job. Someone in the trumpet section was having a bad day. A lot of clams for being in the One O'Clock.
I love what's going on here, just wish we could have some mixed sound instead of only hearing what's happening where the camera is.
great stuff from wayne and a lovely tribute to the man himself.many thanks.
Lmao @1:06 Aaron's just like "yeah! Music!"
Man, this video really gives you a sense of just how much paint Wayne can peel.
Dang! Drew Zaremba's tenor sax solo at 4:36 is just wow! Wayne and the entire band sound spectacular also! Great video!
Muito bom som..... E essa música me faz lembrar muitas coisas boas em que já toquei e intérprete!
Que Deus continue abençoando ao bergeron!
Dennis did a great job singing the flute like always.
Love that flute duet. Cool stuff.
Denis is so cool
1:01 lol
Lol wayne plays "the lick" at the start of his solo. Haha. 6:18
jesse granados I think he did it because the tenor play did it during his solo, but Wayne's was incorporation of the lick more subtle
I know, I heard the lick during the tenor solo, and I started freaking out about it and my brother was like, What dude? I was like, IT'S THE LICK!
IIRC we had taught him that lick at sound check before the show
How to make Wayne Bergeron happy:
Use a wah pedal
I love the improv! Amazing!
4:50 THE LICK
Omg even Wayne was doing "The Lick" too during his solo!
If I recall correctly, we taught Wayne "The Lick" before the show and he got a kick out it.
10:10 Hit him with the "WAWA"
Excellent
Excellent band, great performance - whoever was in charge of production had their head up their wazoo. Apparently the sound was coming off the camera instead of the board.
That Was Awesome!
I though that this would have been a little more stylistically accurate from the UNT band, but Wayne was KILLIN
Los mejores trompetistas del mundo
thanks
Wayne is the BEST!!!!
McFly why are you playing the sax? where is the doc?
Denis is so cool.
Que barbaros excelentes músicos felicidades
Estados Unidos con un nivel musical enorme!
Awesome! ;)
Love Bergerons double Licc @06:14 ish
Sad that the original aggressor, the sax player, didn't seem to notice.
what did you offer the the drummer ????? LOL..nice version..Wayne is great as allways.....
Whoa, that Wayne sound!! He needed a better supporting cast for this one... and Maynard was directing?? haha
I'm guessing they didn't even record the sound, and were just using the board for the live mix. Who knows... but I agree with you, that's some music video 101 stuff.
That was nice.
He plays so much like Maynard its crazy!!
GOOD🎺👍❗️
No, unfortunately, the DVD is not available for purchase.
Not a lick of reverb on Wayne...Why??
It’s a shame that they didn’t use the board audio for this and used the audio from the camera instead. Would have been great to hear the whole tenor solo, but all I could hear was drums for most of it

He's totally doing the lick at 4:51 !!
Shame the recording mic is in the drone....
enjoyed it until 515 and if the camera person got any closer to Wayne they would be engaged!
Is this a dvd available for purchase? I couldn't make it but would love to buy it.
I have a question what is that jazz songs name
One of the section trumpets missed the C.
Laser beams!
Why did the drummer play over the tenor during the solo?
It's what drummers do. :)
we can't hear the sound from his mic in this video. I'm sure it sounded fine out in front of the band.
Teddy Myers probably, I thought it was strange when everyone turned over to the drummer when the sac should have gotten the attention.
The conductor pointed at the drummer as if to give him a solo, but the tenor had his eyes closed. oh well haha
From 5:15 when the bass drops, my god!
I think the tenor solo was good...I couldn't hear most of it because the drummer was "chopping trees down" during it.....I know this is a negative comment, but it is how I felt....just being honest....
2:16 best hair ever:)
what is the name of the song
Who's arrangement is this?
I don't know if it's just me but when Maynard played this song the audience reaction was strongly enthusiastic and even joyous, whether you were a trumpet player or not. It’s just you! I’ll bet you can’t even hold a trumpet!
Wayne played with Maynard, and has been contracted by just as many if not more people. He's definitely a musician
whats the song name
Interesting arrangement. It's a little different than Maynard's.
Bradley Saunders it’s the same arrangement. Maynard changed certain parts of the chart to make it more interesting, depending who he had in the band at the time.
What song?
The over compression of the audio in HORRIBLE!!!
Wasn't necessarily the drummer's fault. Looks looks like they had a terrible Mic/Audio setup. Bergeron's MIc was too hot, drowning out the band backgrounds.
It wasn't Bergerson's mic, the videographer used the onboard camera mic for this which was dumb.
MacArthur Park
E.Serdar Seremet
I’m surprised they went to a rock beat at the tenor solo instead of the straight ahead jazz feel that was on the record.
WB slots the High A with the first valve This what I have to do. Either that or play it with a slight half valve pressed down. The note is so high you can't hear the funky tone from the half valve.

It's Jurassic park by weird al yolic
still struggling to get fergie and phil harris out of my head, or am i the only one.
Wayne was taught by Maynard Fergeson, so......?
nice student band. kinda in teh squares but then its about the degree not beyond .
The notes are there, but missing Maynard's feel, his tone, his high notes releases and his passion
UNT with Wayne does it better than Maynard's band in my honest opinion.
+Linebacker40_1 agreed. I had the opportunity one to hear Maynard play in Seattle with a bunch of UNT alums. Well, did you hear Lynn Nicholson play on this tune?
Really good trumpet player but runs out of air to fast in my opinion
cowmilk222 too*
macarthur park
What is wrong with the drummer... he's gonna make everyone deph around him.
But anyway, Bergeron hits it like a boss!
Well this is Maynard his music is very heavy and loud
It's a mic thing. When they put a mic on everything you at the mercy of the sound guy.
On second listen, it might even be the sound coming from the camera instead of the board. It does sound out of balance.
that tenor 2 becomes lead alto in a couple years!
wayne has such beautiful chops, wqanna play like him? check out roystevens tribute site, roystevensdotorg
Sounded good, but man at most parts... TUNING!!! That shouldn't be an issue for players at this level.
+izzzDelta Every professional player has a couple of bad days.
izzzDelta tunning? sounded fine to me. Maybe your ears are out of tune. Never critique the legendary Wayne
i spot a gauer
the trumpets here were so terrible wtf
Drummer, learn how to accompany and you'll do fine...
Dude it was all the sound guy, there's a lot of mics he could have toned it down
Wayne's version sounds better than Maynard's.
*****

Every time I see this, that guy on second tenor sax that took a solo, pisses me off. Giving mean looking faces to Wayne when ever he's done playing.
Hugo Carreon my man!! those are not mean looks, those are looks of amazement and endearment!! Wayne is INCREDIBLE...gotta love him!
homework music
these kind of bands are always full of prima donnas. the drummer sucked i agree.wayne was fantastic
Too bland, no carizma . No holding out of the Viobatato
I'm sorry, but that drummer just completely ruined the arrangement. It sounded like any off-the-street Guitar Center drummer. Just sad to hear that at something of this level...
Nah, it was fine.
It was just because they used the audio from the onboard camera mic. The drums sounded way hot because the camera was directly over the drums.
the drummer ruined the sax solo by playing over it. i played in big bands for 25 + years. i know what i am saying. full of divas and egos these bands always are.
this is proof that big bands are really finally dead playing this crap
you're an idiot
What music name ?
MacArthur Park
