Ohhhh now I know why Dan and Phil deleted that oreo video and why I can't find it haha
Yeah it's ChannelFlip (the network) who had every British TH-camr (apart from Zoella and her mates) under their wing. They're still a thing I think but they're called FlipSide Talent now
Jack George FlipSide still have some of them. Also I think TomSka's Oreo video is still there.
+Harry Davies they also have Dan and Phil
Jesus Christ I think most of the FlipSide people appear in Tom's vlogs
Harry Davies Ashens is a part of it I'm sure
40 years from now people will remember Emma Blackery, the super famous musician, and the girl who caused #AD
And ended Google+
So what you're saying is that a cookie company got caught with it's hand in the cookie jar?
Hell man, i'd be devastated if my face ended up in the daily mail. That's like my emergency toilet paper...my primary toilet paper being the daily express.
I really enjoyed this as I had no idea about all that! I really like being transparent about the sponsorships, but I just wish we didn't have to call an entire video an "ad" when it is like, 12 minutes long and say...1 to 2 minutes might contain an advertisement. I hope they come up with a guideline that makes more sense, maybe having "ad" show up on screen during the sponsored section or something? (I'm not even in the UK I'm in Ireland BUT I still do it as Ireland are slowly coming around to it and I never ever want to deceive anyone)
Melanie Murphy Ireland IS in the UK 😂😂😂
The Republic of Ireland isn't part of the UK yknow?
The Republic of Ireland (most of the country) isn't, you're thinking of Northern Ireland :) x
Ireland is not in the uk don't insult our country
Ailish Burke #upthera 😂😂😂
I think she should start a podcast.
Someone Nobody Nobody omg your username relates to me
Someone Nobody Nobody you are absolutely gorgeous!! (if that's you in your profile pic)
B E i just looked it up and found the picture!! haha i've never heard of her before so i didn't recognize her oops. thanks for the heads up 😂
To me, "This video is sponsored" sounds less like the company is controlling the content than "This is an advertisement." Maybe it's just a US vs. UK thing?
i agree!
Stephen Abbott yes - it's more like "I made a video and they paid for it to be possible" as opposed to "they gave me money and so I had to make this video"
"BBC to the Dailymail"
Sounds like a downgrade to me.
Dust
That's ALL mass medias.
*****
It's all disinformation with an agenda ranging from propaganda to greed.
I still click on the video even if it is an ad and sponsored as I want to watch that youtuber video and if there getting more money from me watching it and then be able to produce better videos then I'm okay with that
Kitty Courtss Same here.
SameAsMe I mean if you like the youtuber why won't you watch there videos just because it's an ad
Kitty Courtss Exactly! It's nice that someone else thinks the same way.
Same :)
Same, TH-camrs still got bills to pay!
I just have a faint memory of when I was a tad bit younger and I was watching cbbc news and the lady was like lol you tubers r deceiving you and there was just Phil with Oreos on the background
Jewel Meme daddy me too but with zoella on news round and i didn't get what you tubers did haha
I don't care if a video says it's an ad. I'm still gonna watch the video. As long as the TH-camr is being honest about the brand it's still good. A lot of people forget TH-cam is some people's jobs. They need to make money so yeah they're gonna take sponsors, football teams do it and you don't see anyone getting mad about that
I never heard of it but actually I don't really care if it's an ad or not when choosing what to watch. But there are definitely three types of sponsored videos.
1) It's just about the product and the TH-camr can barely act the way they normally would.
2) It's an average video but they say it's sponsored and put the product in once.
3) it's an average video and the sponsored product is in it but you don't realize because it is something they genuinely like and would normally use too.
I feel like it isn't really fair to you guys to suggest that you should've know better etc etc etc, like if it isn;t a rule then it probably wouldn't even cross your mind, and why should it? If they made a rule where retail stores couldn't put logos on 5 pence carrier bags anymore, it's not their fault that they used to do it because why wouldn't they??? I feel like you guys were wrongfully blamed and I support you (and the new rule) 10000%
I honestly don't care if a video is sponsored or not
It's good to be aware of. But yeah sponsored view are usually good
David Cox agreed! there's some I just can't watch (here's looking at you Well-Known-Audio-Book-Brand) but as a whole they're fine! Some are brilliant because it gives the TH-camrs a chance to do something they wouldn't usually do!
Devon Taylor you should tho
I will usually click the video either way, but I feel it's important to (have the right to) know that something I'm about to watch is an ad
Devon Taylor exactly lol. TH-cams get money when we either click on a normal video or an advertisement video
Thank you for sharing this story with us, I've always wondered how the entire thing unfolded! I'm glad it happened because disclosure is important and like you said, we should know what's sponsored and what isn't. You've always been really good and showing clearly that something is sponsored, some people seem to still be struggling to grasp the concept of disclosure.
so this is why I can't see dan and phils oreo lick race 😂
Hannah Shore same
Hannah Shore I just found a link to someone reuploading it th-cam.com/video/CcK4Et4WU30/w-d-xo.html
The fact that you'll just get shamed and not fined or anything for not stating that a sponsored video is an ad is probably the most British thing I have ever heard.
If you look up the complaint on the asa website. It WAS filed by a BBC reporter. #confirmed
huh, didn't know it was confirmed. i didn't want to be responsible for libel, but yeah
Vloggery my googlefu is strong but I remember when it all happened too. I think it was cos of the other channels involved trying to get the story. U know the pair I'm talking about
Thank you for clearing this up!
What a lot of people don't understand about being "media shamed" as a "social media person" is that, not only is it incredibly emotional to go through, but the backlash is terrible to go through as well...subscribers question you, you may lose "good" subscribers and gain trolls, even if you didn't know what you were doing was wrong and it was an honest mistake!
Again, thanks for taking the time and having the balls to stand up and say you were involved, that's generally how everyone should handle stuff.
Ya did good, Emma! xoxo
THANK GOD FOR THIS! I find it insane that TH-camrs were not required to do it in the first place. A TH-camr should be honest with there audience and should disclose any sponsorships they have. Its just decency.
Oh! I saw '#Ad' and thought this was a sponsored video titled 'I Caused'. I'm a dumb. haha
BigNoseBrown same
I would be a hot mess if someone called me saying those things. I would immediately just be in full panic mode. Still would be recovering today.
aaah I remember when this happened, it was just unnecessarily chaotic honestly
you being much happier lately is honestly one of the best things to see
so glad you were able to clarify exactly what happened because all i remember from the incident were ppl removing the oreo vids and slowly adding in #ad #spon on all the videos and thumbnails. i didnt even know it was all over the news and it became some kind of scandal thing
This is a really mature approach to the issue, and I'm actually really happy to get the full story because no one involved has ever really explained what happened??? Thank you for explaining it, love you Emma ❤️❤️
Proud of you Emma for speaking out. (Also, I love your set up!)
It's funny now when lots of youtubers do ads for the same thing *cough* best fiends *cough*. Every time you watch a video that's sponsored by the same thing, it always seems more and more un-genuine every time.
Sooo.. Safe to say I haven't downloaded Best Fiends. Maybe the sneaky technique would've favoured them a bit more. xD
best fiends and audible are SO annoying
TheEllaDarling best fiends was for aids research tho???? audible is just annoying lol
I can't say I remember any of the youtubers promoting the app mentioning that, so I wasn't aware.
I really enjoyed this. as a comedian, TH-camr and someone who works in social media for a day job I've always believed in transparency and honest communication being key. it's sad the number of brands who I've sat in meetings with who have said things like this or similar. just because there's a stigma in some people about ads doesn't mean it shouldn't be displayed. the people who think of sponsored videos as a dirty word were never going to buy your product or be receptive to any messages... personally I think the future is the audience's backing the creator and voluntarily backing content creators they love and brands not getting involved with this space in that way at all. thanks for sharing. x
I love how mature emma is now and doesn't blame the problem on one person and realises the blame is often to share ❤️️
I can only dream of having makeup this great.
I was actually in my journalism class when all of this was happening. Super interesting to hear the backstory!
so THATS why the video from the Dan and Phil licking meme isn't available anymore oOOOOOoOooOO
This new amount of videos is making me so happy! I'm glad you're becoming happier with your content again ❤️ I love you
"I caused #ad" ... that's a good thing it brings more clarity and open honestly into youtube. It's really good I would watch sponsored videos just the same as a normal one. if not more because I know that the youtuber I like is profiting off it for putting the effort in. Thankyou for #ad and #spon Emma!
I totally understand and agree with the fact that there should be clarity as to if a video is sponsored. However, the shaming in the media was ridiculous and it should have been handled much better.
Emma is like a lone mercenary who used to be on a group that disbanded for some safety reason a decade ago, and only has connections to one of the other five mercenaries because all of them went to two person groups to work some smaller gigs
G-piste Etana how specific
ahhh this made me think of the krave thing, when everyone was challenged to do stuff, for krave.
please reupload the advert you did for Three (the phone network), that was the first video I saw of yours and it was pretty funny
i can't, i deleted it
Vloggery awwww I loved that
Vloggery :(((((((((((( oh well,I'll just have to watch Luke in a cat onesie in my imagination
+Jemima Craig GERARD *-*
NNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!!!!! I loved that one. I was hoping you would bring it back some day.
Fenton !!!
It is kind of funny when you go into your sub box and see your latest five subscriptions all plugging Best Fiends. As a consumer I know what to expect more so whenever I see #Ad on a thumbnail than I did before the whole thing was introduced. I remember seeing it on the news and I'm genuinely happy with the change. Yay for transparency. :)
In terms of the legality, yes the ASA is a regulatory body which issues guidelines and yes there is no direct legal statute that can result in fines. However breeching such guidelines could open you to common law lawsuits, whereby an individual or body (such as trading standards) may take legal action against you based on breeching the guidelines, as a breech of the guidelines could be seen as negligence or a deliberate act to deceive and as such you would be in breech of various trading legal statutes. The ASA commonly refers cases to Trading Standards - whereby legal enforcement action can and has been taken against individuals and companies.
"Okay, so this is a story"
ALL ABOUT HOW MY LIFE GOT FLIPPED TURNED UPSIDE DOWN
I remember this shit happening in germany a few years ago.
It was especially against one female TH-camr who was ashamed for her not mentioned sponsored videos.
I understand your point so good and remember this discussion and the time where it wasnt normal to watch or to know about a sponsored video :D
I can't believe this was over 2 years ago!! I love this video, it's really interesting to get an inside perspective on it as from the time it happened everything I knew about it had come from the press
I actually really appreciate that youtubers have to be more transparent about whether or not they've been sponsored, there have been a lot of videos I've decided not to watch because I saw that they were an ad (no disrespect, I fully understand that sponsored videos are how y'all make a living, but sometimes I know that I'll like a video less knowing that it was sponsored). It is a shame that those Oreo videos had to be removed though, the Dan and Phil one especially was a blessing.
This is such a great and informative video! Thank you for uploading and being so transparent about this. I'm doing my 3rd year dissertation on TH-cam and it's advertising ethics etc at the moment and the Oreo case with the ASA is a larger focal point for me, so this is super great to have seen.
Ohhhh! This is so interesting! I've been watching a Scottish TH-camr whom I thought might be sponsored, but I didn't know that there was this ASA regulation. Thank you for clearing this up, Emma.
oooooh phil made the oreo video
I'm glad there is more transparency in disclosing sponsored content. I have no issue with sponsored content as long as it still interesting content then I will watch it. When it comes to paid reviews etc it is good to keep in mind if the person reviewing the product has been paid to do so to factor that into making your own mind up about a product or brand.
youre hair looks so good ah currently growing out a pixie and im so impatient lol hope it grows out as nice as you!
Honestly, it wouldn't bother me if someone didn't disclose an Ad but I understand why they did it.
Ya mentioned Oreo loads of times! - this is an ad video!......mmmm Oreo, must go buy a packet of Oreo's now :D
I totally understand why you were all very concerned and freaked out when you woke up to such a fuss. I would of died lol, you took it well Emma x
Also its not like youtube itself had rules back then
MynameisJessie TH-cam, a godless, lawless town.
i remember this being on bbc news lmao
This is why Dan and Phil got rid of their Oreo lick race
I've never had a problem watching advertisement/sponsored videos from youtubers I really like, although I do appreciate youtubers being transparent about it. Like you said Emma, it is something you should just want to do, just for the sake of being honest about it. (: I can totally understand why some people wouldn't want to watch them though, they're not for everybody and sometimes they can be a little boring/not the content one would be more inclined to. =^-^=
What was your first brand deal? Like what were the numbers/analytics at that time?
As long as it's not a super scripted TV-ish ad, I can't see the problem with sponsored videos. It's content, and if the youtuber is allowed to make it "their own", it's still entertaining content. For more impressionable people it's good to disclose though :)
I remember seeing this on the news and it being a family discussion for several meal times!! It's so weird considering I didn't even watch TH-cam then yet I was talking about my now favourite youtubers videos
Its nice to know you're having fun doing YT again!
I remember, I was in year 6 and it was on newsround and I happened to be the only person who knew you.
I mean I hated that people weren't clear about sponsors at the time, so I was and am glad this happened and the reporter did that, tbh. It felt misleading. But anyway nice and informative video, interesting to hear about this again as I remember it so vividly.
I remember watching the lick race thing! I had no idea about this story though, thanks for sharing :)
From now on I think you should end all your videos with a "fukin hell"
I second this

omg that's an amazing story, I wish I had this kind of story to tell people
I remember being half asleep one day and hearing this story on the radio. When I heard Emma Blackery as one of the villains I was just like 'dafuq!'
I've never been this early omg! ❤️ Much love Emma, I'm so happy that you're feeling happier and looking so much brighter! X
0:00 OK, so this is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down
what a way to make nothing out of something
the news does anything to make people look bad, they blow up everything! it wasn't even the youtubers faults.. sponsored videos shouldn't be shameful! you need income! yeah, they can be annoying, but you make them fun! you're honest, i love u!!
i agree that youtubers should abide by advertising laws...but i dont understand why people are bothered by sponsored videos. sponsors are how youtubers earn their living most of the time. if its your job of course you will do what makes you money!
It's alright Emma, I'm eating Mondelez owned chocolate while watching this 👍 and keeping adblock off. People need to make a living and I'm happy to help!
oh man, i remember when this was going down and wondering what exactly was happening. it's cool to hear your side of the story though!
Oh God, I remember the whole Oreo debacle. I can't believe ChannelFlip isn't around anymore, they used to be huge!
i love listening to you talk about youtube its fascinating also i had no idea that channelflip died!
H4HONG yeah they got bought by endemol and they shut down the network part as far as i know
Without even clicking the video, the minute I saw the title I thought of your Oreo video, it was the first I saw of yours
Okay, I don't care if you have #spon or #ad in your title, it doesn't affect my viewing.. It's just if I like the video itself. And if it's a longer video I can always assume that you won't spend, you know, fifteen minutes talking about the sponsorship.. So I still don't mind. (;
I can appreciate that having to follow the guidelines is a pain but as you say I do think it is so much better to be transparent. For me, I don't think it was the typical 'advert' style videos that were a problem eg 'OOH LOOK BISCUITS', as we see them everyday on TV, but the videos where TH-camrs had 'opinions' on products (particularly beauty products) that were predetermined because it was an advert were sneaky. I remember watching a TH-camr (few years ago now) rave about a range of products which I went out to buy and they were actually shite. Didn't realise at the time that it was a sponsored video #doy
This is so interesting! Helpful for new youtubers as well. Thank you Emma :)! I love watching all your videos whether they're an ad or not x
Wow, I'm only a few minutes in, and this is already a gr8 story y'know
I remember them talking about this on news round
I once heard someone say that in reality Selling Out is simply trying to make money for what they do and what they do well which is 100% correct and yet people so angry about it. It is the way the world works and it is not something to be ashamed of.
I remember this happening on BBC! 😮 (before I even knew who u were)
the oreo lick race omg i remember this and when the problem came around i remember it was on the news because my mum told me that dan and phil's picture was on the breakfast show before i went to school
I've got a real craving for a glass of milk and double stuffed #spons now. Great video by the way, loving all the 2017 content.
I think part of the problem was that some of the brand parent companies are not in the UK and were either ignorant of the ASA or didn't think they applied for your type of digital media
I'm glad it is disclosed that it's sponsored, I try to watch sponsored videos as much as I can since it helps the youtuber more.
I don't think it was anyone's fault necessarily, it's just that the ASA and Ofcom don't really keep up with emerging technologies. I think it's right that youtubers have to put ad or spon in front of a video because one of the things I love about the UK (not trying to sound UKIPPY but this country is a great place to live) is the integrity of broadcasting. This should be across all mediums and it's so much nicer now I know if I'm watching an ad or not.
I think its definitely really important that us viewers know when a video is sponsored
AD video's are frequently just as good as non-ads videos -- really depends on the youtuber. I really like how Anna Akana handles her sponsorships at the end of every video.
I remember seeing this on the news and Phil was in the background
Eating Oreos while watching this. How wonderful.
Love the Positivity Pledge! Great idea.
I'm not bothered if it's an add
I'm just happy to see content and I don't care if i know if they get paid or not
This kinda video looks like a apology video lol
great video Emma! I personally don't understand the stigma around ad videos and I have never not watched a video by anyone just because it's an ad.. if anything I think ad videos have the potential to be better but that's just imo . I also agree with you saying that it should have been made clear from the start.. that way everyone would have been on the same page and accepting would have been simpler. But everything worked out alright in the end eh
To be honest, its nice to see this side of you Emma, I love your original channel and its entirety, but once and a while its nice to just hear you talk about stuff and be you, and just kick back. Keep it up, I love all your videos and I look forward to your next vid.
The daily mail and the Swedish paper Aftonbladet is garbage... they are just the worst.
JoeyRockerTV Aftonbladet is on of the biggest clickbait sites in Sweden
Infernova it's also the worlds worst newspaper. They are doing anything for money.. going after people that have done nothing wrong just to get a fake headline.
They say everything is racist or sexist and they are actually going to the same parties as the politicians so they don't investigate politicians because they are their friends.. They create hate bandwagons to try and attack a lot of things they don't agree with... they are basically youtube hate commenters in real life..
Agreed, but you forgot to mention Fox. They make up the most insane stories, and if someone happens to protest they'll make a small disclaimer/correction which nobody notices. The scary thing with them is that many (usually older) people trust their bs; with Aftonbladet at least (idk about The Daily Mail), most people know the information isn't that reliable in the first place.
It's funny because I saw that on the news and I didn't have a clue who you were or what it was about
Emma this is some great insight in to how TH-cam and creators work together. Thumbs up.
