    my last years resolution was to get out of my depression and stop self harming,i managed the self harming one (yay!) but failed miserably at the depression one. so this year my resolution is to watch more emma blackery videos bc honestly they make me feel so much better :)

      Kat B getting out of depressing habits is incredibly difficult so don't worry about feeling bad, the fact you've given up self harming is huge in its self and I congratulate you for that, I can't begin to imagine how much mental strength it must have taken to do something like that. it will eventually get better though, and I hope for you it does soon. also, your resolutions for this year are wicked my friend.

      Kat B Damn, that's so amazing. To not self harm for a year, that's incredible. Keep at it, you're doing so well. One step at a time with the depression, all is good. Keep on working on it this year, it may not even be over in 2018, but keep working and it will get a bit better each time.

      Rainbownosehair (i love your username btw!) thankyou so much! it wasnt really a whole year that i went without self harm, as i relapsed a few times, but as of today i believe its been 4 months since i last did it! im getting there, slowly but definitely. again,thankyou for your comment and i hope you have a great 2017 :)

      Emma's videos really do help me when I'm depressed... cause when that happens, you don't feel like watching comedy or anything funny (at least I don't), but I still want to watch Emma's videos, which make me laugh even then... or even the ones that are not supposed to be funny, they're a nice distraction from "your mind"...

      Can't you go to a therapist? Depression doesn't always just go away, it can get worse if it's left untreated. And even if it does go away the change that it comes back is a huge if aren't talking to a professional. So if you can I think you should. If you have a reason not to tell me, maybe I can help a little. I'm studying psychology :)

    Top tips to help you achieve your resolutions:
    - Getting up on time - we sleep in 90min cycles so figure out/use sleepyti.me what time you should wake up from your bed time. Also put your alarm on the other side of the room and maybe not use your phone as an alarm as it has too many distractions.
    - Biting nails - have bracelets/something to fidget with when anxious rather than biting nails. It'll take approx 6 weeks to break a habit and for your brain to learn new patterns. Side note - short nails are perfectly ok looking as long as they're tidy, don't worry and keep playing yo guitar.
    - Bullet journals are great.
    - Coffee dates and movie nights with friends are good. Try not to beat yourself up at parties and remember there'll be people there who are feeling the same as you.
    - Your body, health and mental health is as much of a project to work on as your work stuff.

    One of my resolutions is actually to comment on more youtube videos. There are so many youtubers whom I greatly admire but I hardly ever show them that. I think, in the unlikely chance they see my comment, it could really help brighten up their day and show them how much I appreciate the videos they make.

    This is probably crap advice, but I suffered depression when everything in my life went bad at one point. My saviour was a gym instructor who I knew in the local cafe. He said he noticed how depressed I was and offered me a cheap deal to work out in his gym which he promised would turn my life around, and I took him up on it. How right he was. After 2 months I was on a work out high, and my life changed completely. My social life really took off, and I became the guy everyone wanted to know, and it led to the best part of my life. So, I don't know if that would work for everyone, but it worked for me.

    even though 2016 was genuinely a good year for me (main achievements being not biting my nails and not just giving up on college) there's still so much i need to improve. My main one is to get my time organised, put everyting in my calendar, see friends more and keep stuff tidy.     hey Emma!! there's these things you can buy called gratitude journals where you write down a few things you're grateful for everyday, I feel like you'd really like it (especially with having depressive episodes, writing down things you're grateful for at the end of the day can help you see that there's still some light and goodness in the world) I just got given another one for Christmas, and you can just write the little things down like 'I'm grateful for the radio playing my favourite song" or "I'm grateful for the pretty sunset".

    One thing I found that really helped me stop biting my nails was having them painted all the time. If they look nice and you've put effort into doing them then I feel bad biting them and dont want to ruin them, so yeah, good luck with your resolutions and have a fab 2017! xxx

    My new years resolution is to be more possitive and to socialise more. I had anxiety, stress and PTSD from bullying for about a year and a half. I have recovered now but I want to learn the skills that I have been taught through therapy and such. All in all I just want to have the best year as possible.😁

    I have my big two resolutions for this year
    1: Work on my anxieties - I have been a very anxious person for a really long time. I get anxiety attacks while driving in the city (I live in the country, Don't drive in the city very often). So If I can learn how to control my anxiety while driving I will be taking a big step forward
    2: Work on better eating habits - About two years ago I went from weighting 280 pounds to 180 pounds last time I checked ( I don't know what unit of measurement you use for weight). I started eating less (by that I mean less snacking and better food portions and more fruits) and I started to feel great and look great, as I have always been overweight. But I moved out of my parents house in June I believe, and my good eating habits went out the window. Alot more snacking because I'm too tired to cook after work (I'm working 9 and a half hour days for a labouring company) and alot more unhealthy shit. I'm going to make proper food portions and less snacking my priority again for the new year to get my body back to where it was and hopefully loose more weight (A healthy amount of weight) and exercise more! I've done it before, so I know I can do it again!! :)

    i'm a big supporter of new years resolutions, it's always good to set aims for yourself so if the start of a new year is the push you need to get on track with that then i think it isn't necessary for people to rain on that.
    my resolutions are 2 learn norwegian, eat more veggies, switch to drinking mainly and mostly water + continue trying my best at being empathetic and understanding to every1 :-) i'm trying to write these and say these as much as i can because once it's out there it's permanent

    On the nail thing. Nail varnish is a God send. I've gone through so much but it stops me because I get so angry at myself for ruining it. Also, your nails will be weak for a long time when you stop biting them, expect breakages ad file them down so you don't end up nibbling off the raggedy bits. Good luck Emma x

    My resolution sounds very simple, but it's just to be happier. To try to make myself happy in the moment and not worry about the future that much. To be happier and less stressed, that is my resolution.

    UGH I am the same with nail biting and just recently sort of got over it! If you keep a nail file or an emery board in your bag/pocket whenever you leave the house, you can pull it out and use it when you notice yourself biting your nails, which helped me :)
    that way you still get to do something with your hands to distract from the anxiety.

    First year of 28 that I actually have serious resolutions that I will try to keep. Maybe that shit year finally managed to show me how much less than I assumed is actually set in stone.     I'm stopping biting my nails too and what helps me is painting them - once you get through the "OH, THEY LOOK SHITTY PAINTED WHEN SHORT" phase you're good. I told myself, that short painted nails look better than bitten ones. I really hope we both can stop!

    i didn´t have any resolutions last year because I was in a very bad mental state and thought everything was shit and I´d be dead by my 16th birthday (december 2016) anyway but this year I have only 3 resolutions. Care better for myself(eat healthier, cut meat out completely, exercise more), do more of what makes me happy(Studying too because it´ll make me happier in the long run) and just be more carefree and nice and just happy in general. I want to spread positivity and light in 2017 and I won´t let the world make me dull and angry

    I didn't HAVE a new years resolution, because I don't usually do them, but what you described at 00:59 is so me. With this, the actions you described to break the habit, you've actually inspired me to change my lazy, procrastinating ways. We'll do it together, it'll be fun! ...or less terrible, at least.

    we lived through the shittest year in my life! tbh probably the worst year for a lot of people.
    also a tip for your nails - buy a nail strengthener, and get a smallish stress ball and squeeze the ends of your fingertips into it or just squeeze it normally. it worked for me and they've never been better, and they're stronger ❤❤

    I know this may not be too relevant to the video, but personally from an observers point of view, I think Emma has grown so much as a person in the last year or two!! It's amazing to know that there can be a constant state of progress. I feel inspired.

    This is a great set of resolutions! I really love the stream of consciousness writing one, and I think I might add that to my list. I've been struggling to be more creative and I think that will really help. As far as eating healthier goes, I think it's important to remember that it doesn't have to be a full, immediate change. Eating healthier is a long, slow path. Be kind to yourself and take it one small change at a time. I've found changing my diet slightly about every week (such as cutting out a particular sweet for that week) really helps me to keep a healthier diet. Being kinder to myself was also one of my resolutions! This one is really difficult but so worth it. While I totally believe that you should never treat yourself based on what others say you are, I do find it very helpful to absorb the genuinely kind comments from people who really love me in order to remind myself that I deserve to be treated gently and with care just as much as anyone else. I absolutely love your content, and I can't wait to see what all you create in 2017! 💖

    About a month ago I started making an effort to stop biting my nails and with a mixture of 50% will power and 50% disgusting nail bite solution, I'm starting to make progress :). Good luck with your resolutions Emma!

    I'll try, like you, to travel more, be more outgoing that I may work against these depressive phases. I want to get a bit more structure in my life. I hope that'll help me with my mental health, too.

    my mum was like "oh your year wasn't too bad, you went to university" well yeah apart from the fact that almost every month I had some "family drama" (totally not someone constantly trying to kill themselves) and that I failed my exams and my chronic fatigue got worse. Great year 10/10 would recommend.

    1. Not keep toxic people (people who make me feel bad, etc) in my life.
    2. Not let people waste my time (spend time with people who know what they want from me)

    I have found that learning to do my nails yourself helped me to stop biting my nails. I can still bite them down until they bleed when I get hit by anxiousness, but keeping my nails painted and buffed helps me stop biting them just because I'm bored.

    I didn't set any resolutions for 2016 because I wasn't in my best mental state
    I did set some for this year though:
    - Eat healthier
    - Lose some weight (ideally 30 lbs or more)
    - Quit smoking (typical, I know)
    - Get a stable job
    - If that one goes through by like half of the year start to fix my mouth
    - Write, produce and direct at least 2 short films

    Those all sound like awesome goals for the year! I love to hear the different ways you plan to try to push yourself to create more, since that's something I'm also not happy with personally, and I get mad at myself for wasting time on my phone when I could be painting or practicing guitar. Love that you aim to forgive yourself more; that's so important to growth (in anything) and something I'm learning myself. Happy new year, Emma!

    dude i am the same way about being alone and like, not showering til 3p and all of a sudden the whole weeks gone by and i haven't left my house. ugh. this year i want to read at least one book per month.. which will get me through every book that i own that i have not yet read (goal two). i also am hoping to muster the courage to really follow through and pursue a dream that i've had for years. i quit my job in august to do just that but have not made much progress because, i have recently learned that i am really really afraid of failing at it. and thats bad. my brain is telling me not to go all in because i don't want to add another important thing to my list of things that i almost was great at... i need to get over that and just do it 100%.

    A good tip for nail biting is to paint them so you dont want to ruin them. Get them done at a salon or something if you cant do them well enough to consider them precious enough to preserve! Hope this helps! Good luck with the resolutions!

    My new year's resolution this year is to maintain stability. Last year I think it was something to do with going out more and being happier etc and long story short it failed. But new mindsets are wonderful things and I'm hopeful.

    I don't like making resolutions at New Year's because they always always get broken once the spirit is gone. So my resolutions are always to continue doing good things I've been doing before. So I'm going to keep working on my youtube channel content, keep plugging away with my band, keep writing and publishing my books, and keep to my diet, which to be fair was kinda medically prescribed so that's not one I have as much choice over

    My main New Year's Resolution for this year is being less nice and more honest with people.
    I don't want to be a bitch (been there, done that, not good at all), but I tend to be super nice and never argue with everyone, even when I am right. Usually I pretend I'm wrong just to avoid arguing/confrontation, and I hate that.
    I want to keep on working on my self-esteem, 'cause in 2016 I managed to feel a little bit better about myself and I stopped blaming me for everything. I'm still a work in progress, but I can do it.
    And, lastly, I want to be more vulnerable with people, learn to open up when I need to. 'Cause I never do that as much as I want, and I believe that if I start to talk about what hurts me with my friends it might actually get better for real.

    btw maybe you should try those "hardener" nailpolishes, it helped me (grow faster and stronger haha, at some point i wasn"t even able to bite them anymore) or try to replace with smtg less damaging as it is nervous, love yo u are precious

    Emma for what it's worth I've (mostly) overcome nail biting that I had when I was a child. It took me YEARS. I recommend always having some nail clippers and files to hand.

    I never really had new years resolutions. But this year I think I will try.
    The first one I had was that I was going to ride again the 1/1 2017. And I made it. Haven't been able to for almost half a year because of my health, but today I was back on the horse back.
    Second I agree with you, i will try to be nicer to myself cause I been very very mean this past years.
    I will try to write at least a page every day. I want to film more. I will try to not let ppl get to me as easy, words are just words, it's me that makes them in to weapons.
    And i will try to work on my health. I will never get rid of this illnesses but maybe i can at least get better.
    Holding my breath that this year will get better.

      I have the same feelings. I think the negative feelings about 2016 are kind of... pervasive... might be the wrong word. Like, things that bummed out a lot of people on a broader scale (whether it be down to politics, the seeming spate of celebrity deaths, etc.) became something that spread around. So while some people might personally have had an actually okay 2016, that general feeling dragged them down a bit and they might find it hard to see the good parts. Negativity breeds negativity and all that.

    hey sorry if the advice is unsolicited but if you struggle to go consecutive days without biting you nails breaking the streak might really dishearten you, so the way I finally stopped biting after 18 years was by stopping biting each nail one by one, looks pretty odd but kind of satisfying to watch each one grow in turn, and weans you off of it pretty well! good luck, I hope your 2017 is great

Making new year resolutions is dumb, coz everybody thinking about that they write new chapters of their lives, but the only thing they do is flipping pages on their calendars. I think that every single detail of your character or behavior makes you special. Don't try to change something in yourselves or one day you'll get bored. Let the time teach you how to grow.

    I bit my nails for most of my 18 year old life and honestly how I stopped was finding other things to do with my mouth. It's the chewing that I like, I discovered, so I've taken up chewing gum instead (sugarless of course).

    I think we are headed into a time where we are gonna hear about celebrities passing waay more often. entertainment industry really took off in 50s and 60s. these people that were ' in thier prime then are gonna start dropping: 2017 will be worse on that front

    one of the best things i did for myself is to stop biting my nails. i always checked in with myself "am i biting now?", it's annoying for awhile because you're constantly aware of yourself, but it works. also put nail polish. it helps. and have something to play in your hand like a hairband or something

    my new year's resolutions: begin to learn to drive, look after my back (I have scoliosis), drink more water, keep my room cleaner. if I can do one of these, I'll feel fine :)

    I didn't set any new years resolutions last year I don't think, because I knew I'd just fail them anyways😂 but for 2017 I have a list of things I want to work on, but nothing like "start eating healthy" because same, I just like snacks. And I know I'm more likely to stick to things that aren't super strict and instead kind of makes me a better person or makes me feel better in general, and not to things that might make me feel super shitty if I don't stick to them. So like for example, a new years resolution this year is "make an effort to see your friends more" because I've been very bad at that all years before, so I want to try to actually hang out with my friends on weekends etc.

    I didn't make any new year's resolutions for 2016... or 2015... or 2014. I basically stopped in 2008. Anyway, I think for this year my resolutions are:
    1) Find a new job - I've been in the same retail job for like three-and-a-half years and it's absolutely soul-crushing when I give in to it.
    2) Play World of Warcraft more - This game was, for a part of 2016, my main way of relaxing but I stopped playing in the summer for various reasons.
    3) Not to worry so much that I can't be "me" all the time - I have a side to me that people around where I live don't actually know about, but I've been managing to visit friends further afield a bit more in recent months and it's letting me be more open about who I am.
    4) Realise that there are things I can do - 2016 was one of those years where I've either been put down or put myself down so much that I've almost given up on believing I can do anything. I like the idea of "micro-victories" and keeping track of them, so we'll see how it goes.
    5) Enjoy the little, good things more - I let myself be brought down too easily by negativity that I almost completely forgot that there was anything even remotely good about 2016. Work was getting me down, I started self-harming again, I started going to counselling again, I was still stuck in a job I hated, one of my lizards died and then the dog I'd owned with my ex had to be put down just before Christmas, and so on and so on. It all made me forget that I'd also stopped self-harming again (well, almost, getting better), I'd stopped going to counselling again, I started driving again, I re-homed a snake, I started seeing my friends more often (thanks to the driving) and I met new people who I now hang out with almost every week. If I can focus more on the positive aspects of 2017, rather than the negative ones, then I think that's a good step in the right direction.
    I'm also tempted by the stream of consciousness morning diary type thing. It sounds really interesting.
    Overall, I think my goal this year is to stop thinking of myself as a failure and that I've somehow let myself down, or that I'll fail if I try, and I need to stop letting my negative thinking dictating how I view my life. My job doesn't rule my world, I'm not defined by my scars, and I should take comfort in the fact that there are places out there where I can just be who I am and express myself.
    ... That was longer than expected...

      Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo is really good, but it is pretty damn dark at times, so if you're sensitive to some topics I wouldn't recommend it.

    The socialising thing I relate to. I have friends that live so close to me but I never go out with them. I don't know why but now whenever I go out with my closest friends I'm just a panicky mess. I want to improve on that this year

    Oh Emma, I'm /exactly/ the same about my nails. I've managed to stop biting for a while in the past, and then one lil thing happens and bam, biting again.
    Two things that have helped me in the past. Number one: hand cream - get a tube of a cream that you really like (I used Body Shop almond hand cream), keep it with you all the time, and whenever you catch your hands going to your mouth, you grab that tube and you moisturise your hands. It works cos it replaces the bad habit with a good habit, you see.
    Second thing takes a bit more time/effort/money, but it completely stops you biting for the duration. You get a nail varnish you like, plus base coat, top coat and a hand/nail cream/serum. You get a pack of cheap-ass glue-on fake nails from Superdrug and a cheap but sturdy nail file. You set aside an afternoon, and you give yourself a full set of fake nails. Serum/cream, select nail sizes, glue nails on (do dominant hand first), file fakes down to reasonable length/shape, base coat, two coats colour, top coat. Make sure you leave plenty of time between coats cos you do not want to screw this up (funnily enough, I find fake nails easier to paint than my natural ones. Huh). The cheap fakes usually last 5-10 days, which is enough to give you a start on the not-biting /and/ help your nails grow a bit. You're supposed to soak them off with acetone, but honestly, if your hands are exposed to sufficient warm water/soap/etc., you can peel them off real easy and just wipe the leftover glue off with a cotton pad dipped in polish remover.
