I would've loved if the Halo cookbook was all military rations and canteen food. Put it all on those silver trays and make all the backgrounds look like the spaceship interiors with some having Cortana or blue light effects and voila! An in-theme cookbook. This seems more like a normal cookbook with some very watered down Halo stuff inside. :(

It's almost like people don't solely eat MREs. Also MREs don't make sense as a cookbook basis, as most of them are premade meals meant to be warmed up.
@@gaymansupreme Canteen food, or "lunchroom food", could be showcased and really elevated though. As something that grew up with tv dinners and the school lunch program, I think that would be a really fun idea. You could still make basically anything, just have mains and sides that compliment each other and look good in that sectioned off way that trays do. You could have different sections where officer meals are, really high end stuff only for high ranking officials. Maybe showcase some cocktails they made by scrounging up what they might have on the ship.
As a halo vet like myself, I actually like that there is little to no master chief or unsc references, especially because Arturo is just a chef and not a marine. I also like the sight of concept arts, it lets us see what a normal civilian would see in a city we never get to see. Overall, really happy with that choice.
"I didn't know Halo had much food-related content..." It doesn't. There's one time you see "moa wing" flavors on a food stand, (Moa are emu-like animals), and we hear the grunts talk about "food nipples" a bunch, that's pretty much it.
In one of the Halo novels Buck talk about clam chowder he would have at a bar with his uncle in his homeworld before he join the UNSC. So I wonder if the cook book has a recipe like that.
Shame the cookbook didn't go heavy into Halo's world/lore. Imagine all the dishes you could develop that are influenced by the Covenant, or at least more Halo inspired recipes rather than just a normal cookbook, so much untapped potential.
I mean, at least include something that claims to be Sangheili barbecue, which was introduced by one of the novels in one of the very few food-focused scenes in the canon.
@@knightofarnor2552 Or what about Brute spit roasts? Charred just the way they like it. Either way, I agree. Lots of missed potential there. But at least Moa meat was mentioned
As far as I can tell most video game cookbooks are like this & more so try to be influenced by environment than anything else, I own the destiny cook book & it has a similar issue but I think it’s probably more compounded with this book because the main stories are more detached from the game’s environment & the culture of the people in it
I never thought I’d see Halo-Halo be incorporated with Halo itself! Although it’s only now they did it since Halo never made much of a cultural impact to Filipino gamers
I was surprised when I saw the purple ice cream so I paid attention when he was showing the ingredients and Ube was there! I wouldn't expect Americans to know it.
In defense of the lore/world building of the cookbook, I think it is far more effective to flesh out a world like Halo through the eyes of a regular citizen through a cook book. The lack of info about Chief, Cortana or the war makes sense as this is a random person. Someone like you or I is not going to know the specifics of a member of Seal Team 6 for example, so it makes sense chief would only get a passing mention. This book would be a great opportunity to expand on civilian life in some of the planets we see in games or novels, and make the universe feel more lived in (which i think it does). I will say that with the premise, they missed out on a huge opportunity to have some recipes from the authors "favorite restaurant on Reach" that he's trying to recreate from memory after the planet's destruction
The Author has said that this one was kind of a rushed project taking about 1 months to complete compared to the usual 2-3 months. That said the food is still good but its also the unhealthiest one she has done and theres a reason behind it. Though there isnt a lot of Halo Tie in stuff while I recommend getting it for the recipes alone there isnt really a lot of food in the games. She did the best she could though but again good food.
I can tell, this wasn’t her best she’s very good at adapting source material into cookbooks. The fallout cookbook feels like it really could be something vault-tec would give to their residents in universe.
That intro and outro was amazing! It's kind of baffling that the book is so far removed from the lore. This could have been easily remedied to have Arturo be a chef in a military casfeteria where the Spartans visit. Soldiers have to eat too and it would have given the writer the oppournity for Arturo to interact with or observe Halo characters. The reipes look very good and taste even better and that is what counts.
There are media franchises where a tie-in cookbook makes sense. Bob's Burgers? Surprised it took so long. Monster Hunter? Action RPGs love to use food as healing items. Halo? Master Chief eats food?
since halo is a lot more than just a game franchise now it makes sense to branch out and try something like this but i wish more effort was made in actually theming these recipes to the halo universe.

I was curious to see how this book turned out. There does seem to be a lot of references to the games and books with the recipes, but it does seem like a missed opportunity to stick to only human-made dishes. They could've stuck to the theme of the book, while still doing this and had the author say that he was on Sanghelios (the Elite planet) for a while with the Swords, and had some Elite cuisine or something. Would've given the book a bit more of that sci-fi flair that it seems to be lacking. I do like how each of the items you picked to cook are connected to the games specifically. Blast Soda is seen in some vending machines across different games, Moa Burgers were first seen in Halo Reach, and Fronk's was featured on the Halo 3 MP map Longshore.
Great work on this video. Concerning the white pith of the peels for the Blast soda I'd say it's the fault of those who wrote the book. Though I have one important question... What about dessert!?
