    Hey Starry, nice video, thanks for showing that. We went totally wood chips this year, probably 200 yards of wood chips on our gardens and tree's. This is the first year our tomatoes didnt get buggy and blighty just before harvest. Wood chips have helped us tremendously with controlling our over-watering problems, its helped our small little fruit tree's thrive also. Its the only way to go I think, and I dont have to weed, the BEST THING EVER!!!!

    Ok. After watching so many of your videos I want to say thank you for sharing. God is good. And so glad to find someone like you here. I don't have a homestead. One of my many dreams. But I love learning new ways of living better.
    I'm going to school to be a nurse and I have three kids. My hubby and I always talk about buying some land and living free of debt. Slowly getting there. Taking it one step at a time with my dreams on my mind.
    You are a blessing.

    I see so many people who start the BTE garden method, place the w/chips down and think that is the secret ingredient, when its not. The w/chips are just the covering and eventual soil upon decomposition. The real secret is using the BTE method to build soil web and balance of bateria to fungi ratio. checkout Mark's videos from I am Organic Gardening, who goes in to greater detail about building soul using living coverings/ grains while planting within them. I do love your energy and passion Starry and I too am using the BTE method and didn't want those discouraged when results are not the same. All the best and peace..

    thank you so much for you videos! I love your positive attitude and blessed heart. we belong to a community garden in a large city in California and have really loved the feel of community and the ability to grow food for our family in such an urban setting. we use a similar method to yours using wood chips. I was wanting to purchase some more plants for our garden but was having to wait due to budget restraints. I went to our garden this morning and a fellow gardener was unloading free pepper, eggplant, tomato, and basil plants for anyone who wanted to plant them. I said a prayer right there thanking God for providing and thought of you:) have a Blessed day Starry!

We just had a load of wood chips delivered and have another one due in a day or two. We told the tree service guys to include logs so we can heat the house again this coming winter mostly for free. I am also considering taking out my garden framing so I can garden without trip hazards..LOL

I highly respect the gospel that you share in your videos,as I am a born again Christian man,I was saved in 2007. And now starting over dew to divorce,we became unequally yoked together. But my question is, I am starting a new garden and would greatly appreciate if you could give me guidance like a step by step on how much and of what I need to do to get back to growing Gods way the Eden way.
    Thank you for any help that you can share and may God greatly bless you and your family and the Seed of His Word that you share!

    WOO HOO today is sep 17 TH it is Constitution Day !!!,
    But most people dont know this . the Constitution signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787 represents the greatest expression of statesmanship and compromise ever written. In just four hand-written pages, the Constitution gives us no less than the owners' manual to the greatest form of government the world has ever known.
    Like if you believe in our Constitution !!

    Starry...before learning this was a thing I was formulating and little experimental plan for my new garden for this spring, then I came across this and I think Ill incorporate them together...questions thought is SLUGS!!! What about slugs with the wood chips. They LOVE wood and use it to hide so i am concerned about it harboring slugs. Since you also live where there is snow and moisture I wondered what you have run into. I live in Alaska and we had the worst SLUG YEAR EVER last year because of rain. I am scared there eggs are secretly everywhere waiting to hatch :-)- THanks

    thanks for sharing your wisdom. my hubby and I live in Scotland UK and I've often wanted to grow veg in the back and front yard. but because our soil and weather is not good. we find it hard to grow anything. So we may need to dig up the grass and do what you guys are doing !

    • @nancyburridge
      @nancyburridge 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +AngelTashaUK You don't need to dig up the grass. You can put a layer of newspaper under the wood chips or put a 8" - 12" layer of wood chips which will kill the grass. It will depend on whether you have anything like thistle in your lawn. Watch the original www.backtoedenfilm.com/ to get the whole story. Good luck!

    • @AngeltashaUK

    Starry: I love all of your videos on back to eden gardening and using wood chips. I don't do vegetable gardening. Instead I'm looking to see how I can transfer these ideas to my flower beds, which are already established. I already make compost in a bin and put it over my plants. Can I implement the layering process with chips on these beds? Thanks so much. If there's a particular video I should watch please let me know.

  • @jasonstefanuk3579
    @jasonstefanuk3579 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Starry there is no "MAY" to fix your soil before you begin the layered covered garden system (Eden).. A soil test is always a good idea. Like a complete physical before starting an exercise program after a heart attack. Otherwise great work.

    Hi Starry! My husband & I have been tuned into you for about 6 months now & we love your advice. We had a garden that is now completely run over with weeds & creeping grasses. We love the idea of the Back to Eden gardening but we have some questions. Do we need to pull all the weeds before we start layering the wood chips and also what kind of wood chips, pine? or does it not matter? We look forward to your reply.
    Thanks & many blessings to you,

    Great video-answered a lot my questions! One more--why keep the wood chips away from a newly planted plant? I would think it would like the mulch. What would the wood chips cause to happen that is bad in that first week after planting? Thanks.

    @dianebeckner884 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Starry, I am jut starting the wood ships thing and am having some delivered next week. FREE! Here's the thing, I thought Paul said to have some green in that chips. Can I put these chips on my already established garden this year or do I wait til fall for a spring planting? I know it would mainly be for mulch at this point, but I don't want to risk having nutrients taken out of my garden. Thanks

    Starry, I love your videos! I have a question. I really want to use this method, but I have REALLY BAD gopher problems. How do you deal with them in a system like this? Do I still have to make screened boxes? Is there a back to eden gopher solution?

  • @JeanniePartin
    @JeanniePartin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question Starry! I am starting now to lay down the foundation with cardboard to start a back to Eden garden in the Spring. I also have well seasoned wood chips (yay)...but my question is about the compost. If you don't have compost ready to use, can you buy compost? Would that be a problem? And would I buy the compost now and lay everything down or wait until Spring?
    Of course we already have a compost started that will work in a few months, but we're not ready to use that yet.

    Starry is going to need our help, she has been in a bad accident. Details are here: www.gofundme.com/starryhilder
    A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running.
    If you can't donate but still want to help, here is a poster you can print and share: tinyurl.com/j988m54
    Here is a link to an update video she posted yesterday: th-cam.com/video/4Til0Cj-yKc/w-d-xo.html
    Thank you for anything you can do to help.

    Hey Starry. We just got a huge supply of free wood chips from our local road department with more loads coming our way. My question is since it is planting season for us (Missouri) should we go ahead with the garden like usual and cover with the chips once the plants are established THEN start layering and mulching? Or should we start the back to eden garden in another spot and wait until next spring to use the area? I guess what I am asking in short is what do you do if it's already growing season and you don't have anything done yet? Thank you and God bless.

      +DeadBroke Homestead NEVEr use fresh wood chips..let them age...! That wi take some time..can speed them up in the summer with watering the chips...You might be able to scout for some in the woods or along the road ways where the crews have chipped from the previous years..then you can use them right away! But Im assuming the crews are bringing you fresh..so be careful!

    Well Starry, is that your real name, I have watched Back to Eden Garden videos and have to say that you have explained how to add wood chips and other items to the top layer better, for me. My wife doesn't understand this method yet! Hoping!!!!

    Enjoyed your tutorial on the wood chip garden method. Looks like I need to do this, although my garden does well as is. I hope you take the time to see my latest video on canning homemade tomato soup. I am very nervous and words seems to get blocked somewhere in my head. My second video of actually showing myself doing something. Let me know what you think, please!

    So with pine needles....if I'm raking them now for covering (we have lots that have fallen from trees....they are brown....but fairly recent falls)....how long do we need to age them before using them as ground coverings?
    I'm gonna try to get a good contact for wood chips, but I'm thinking of using pine needles if I can't... I have 25 huge trashbags full of pine needles (ah the joy of living in the piney woods of East Texas. :)

      +Jeannie Partin put them on now! you will be good to go come planting time! pineneedles when brown are pretty much ready to use. you need to take some pics of you garden with the pineneedle covering and post for others to see!

    Hi - I have a question regarding the chips and compost. What if the chips I get are already composted? Do I still need to add compost or can I just use the wood chip compost? Will I need to add more wood chips that have not composted? Please let me know. Thanks.

    I wonder if saw dust would work as well as we have our own sawmill and have tons of sawdust.....

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jayne Carey NO sawdust..the woodchips are a mix of green and bown..it has elemental nitrogen and carbon..sawdust does not!

    • @StarryHilder

    Hi Starry, I have a question and have been getting mixed responses from others! So I have come to you, the BTE master :-P I am getting FRESH wood chips delivered today- do I let them sit till autumn and put them on after this growing season? Or do I just put them down now? Some people say wait, others say go for it! I don't want to ruin all my seed starts :-/. Love all your videos! God bless!

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +beingcaitlin NEVER use fresh woodchips..the must must be aged..place them in a pile...it will take some time..you can speed up the process by watering the pile...aid in the decomposition

    What about leaves? Living in the Appalachian Mnts and fall approaching, I have an enormous amount of mulched (and un-mulched) leaves and very little soil (rock everywhere). Can I utilize these leaves to help build my soil base prior to applying the wood chips???

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +OUR PLANET EARTH yes, leaves are awesum! if you want to enhance your soil they work best if you can run them over and over with a lawn mower, then mix with your soil. they also work great as a cover, put them right on top as they are and put the wood chips on them....layering. they will break down beautifully providing wonderfull nutrients to your soil!

    Hi Starry! Liking your videos on this method, thank you!! I use diatomaceous earth in my chicken coop and in their feed to help reduce parasites etc.... do you think it would be okay to use their manure in my garden when I start? I've heard a few say you shouldn't use in the garden... but I can't remember why!! Thanks!!

    • @StarryHilder
      @StarryHilder  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Katie McD chicken poo is the absolute best!! make sure it is aged or composted if fresh and you are putting it directly into your soil. if you are using woodchips, mulched leaves or some other type of cover for your soil you can put fresh poo directly on top and let it leech into your soil
      i have never heard of anyone not recommending chicken poo for a garden!
