These videos are so very helpful! I live at home with my parents (I'm 18), but when I move out I sure will have my own garden filled with plants, foods and flowers!! It's so good I can watch these videos and collect all this information :) Sadly, my parent s won't let me use their garden for practicing gardening, but I'm trying a few things with pots indoors!

Well that was a fun and informative journey. hate to see the end of the garden, but on to new things and start over again in the spring. Hope the transplanted plants survive. It will be interesting to see what goes on with them. Cant wait to see what winter has in store for the homestead!! Big hugs to you and the Mr. Love your videos!! I'm learning a lot, yall are great teachers.

Tip for transplanting peppers , pick all the peppers off and pinch any flowers off for a few weeks , helps them take the shock a little better , also doesn't hurt to cut them back at the end of the season , to half their height , before putting into pots. =)

Was funny today, I had to mow the yard but it's all herbs in permaculture. Mustard, mallow, and a couple of dandelions. They are blooming and so beautiful!!! It's desert here and it will be all dirt brown soon. Well almost. The Citrus trees orange, lemon and grapefruit live. Also a desert orchid tree and California pepper corn. I love your peppers!!! I have some in the fridge. Yummy!!! Blessings Sister!!!

Hi Starry! Great Video. Love seeing the Hubby working in the background of the video. This is the end of the 4th year of our gardening adventure here in Indiana. We are using a modified Back to Eden method and learning all the way. Since we are in a Urban setting it took a while to teach my husband how I can use the spent greenery in the garden instead of placing it in the garbage can!! I am also using our Autumn leaves and Starbucks Coffee grounds. I really encourage your viewers to start a garden if they have not... it is the total learning adventure.

Great tips for garden care. So many people think that the back to eden garden method simply means that you put some wood chips down. People don't realize that Paul processes his wood chips through his chicken coop before spreading them in his garden.

Good information as always, I to have started to add compost and chicken manure to my beds for next planting season. you really should invest in building a greenhouse to help with growing during the winter... you have way too many plants to keep in your window... your husband has the skill set... and you can do it very cheaply by salvaging the items to build with... i have faith in your ability to make it happen...

OH! That would just kill me to pull up all those gorgeous pepper plants. Early winter, I was able to save all mine into pots and they sit in a bay window. Doing fairly well, it has been a mild winter so far, and a few flowers even! I wonder though, if it is important for pepper plants to endure a dormancy period prior to spring. I am growing my variety of peppers this spring, so this plan might not be an option next year. Those pepper plants are JUST amazing. Nice job!

Hands down the best garden tool i have ever bought is a 6 tine fork with a full length handle, specifically the Garant G0613L (it's Canadian but i'm sure you can find a product of similar quality in the US). The close placement of the tines makes it great for everything from moving or digging soil, moving wood chips or turning compost and its long handle saves the back. I have two actually and for the last one i bought i paid about $64 CDN but consider it a good investment. I think True Temper makes a good one too. BUT any time you can buy used tools of good quality at a garage sale, snap them up, in a lot of cases the old saying "They don't make 'em like they used to" holds true and you are only paying pennies on the dollar to boot.
    Cheers.

Re: your peppers- I've seen a video before where a guy would winter his peppers in unheated greenhouse by cutting down the top and leaving short trunk of the plant. Cover it all under tones of straws and munch and next year the plant started growing with already established root system. Pepper plant was over 1.5m tall with tones of fruits on it. Amazing. If you feel like give it a go that might be very interesting experiment.

    Amazing garden!
I struggle with "back to eden" method. I have put thick layer of chips last winter. Everything was ok until late spring. We got slugs explosion in our garden. Granted I didn't have to water and weed but I have never lost so much crop to the slugs. I live in UK so we get lots of rain here. Before, the birds could pick the slugs from the soil but now slugs can hide inside the chips and avoid most of the predators :(. Will wait and see next year.
Love your pepper plants, they are HUGE :)

Internal window boxes are great for herbs year round. Maybe in the spring you'll look at a south facing green house for more plants and herbs. We had one out in the Olympics and it worked out really well. You should look at getting some blackberries and raspberies in the spring, they'll do really well there along with plumbs, apricots and nectarines.

How deep do you pile the chips and also does everything decompose completely under those chips by Spring? I live in Michigan so I'm not sure what to expect. Thank you so much!

Starry is going to need our help, she has been in a bad accident. Details are here: www.gofundme.com/starryhilder
A GoFundMe page was started on her behalf. Even $1 would go a long way to help her during this crisis in her and her family's life. I created an email address that I will share with Starry and her family, they will receive 100% of the proceeds by using this address. I have listed the address at the hospital where you can send cards or care packages on the GoFundMe page if you prefer send something through the mail, just so everything is in one central location. Starry has a daytime job as a nurse and needs our support to help with bills and running her homestead while she is recovering. As you all know she also contributes immensely to her homestead's upkeep and her contribution will be missed. If everyone donates only $1 it will go a long way to help her keep things running.
If you can't donate but still want to help, here is a poster you can print and share: tinyurl.com/j988m54
Here is a link to an update video she posted yesterday: th-cam.com/video/4Til0Cj-yKc/w-d-xo.html

Great video, Starry. You and I talked (in the comment section) last summer about overwintering peppers and tomatoes. Our pepper plants are about the same size as yours and we're a bit nervous about bringing them in the hoop house, even though we had pretty good success with them a couple years ago. We're gonna try planting some seeds in the fall and keep them warm and sunny and see if they bear fruit before next spring. Gardening really is a just a series of experiments, isn't it?
BTW, where do you get your wood chips way up there in the boonies?
    Karl

+ItsyFarmYes when the pepper plants are this big...a little nerve racking to see what will transpire. We are going to cut them back to alleviate risk of bugs and help them put whatever energy they have into their core......As for woodchips..we go to the local dump...and we dirve the county roads...getting harder to find this year though. We found some in a logging area also this spring....would love to have more though!!

Since the pepper plants now have a stressed root system after digging them up, would it be beneficial to severely cut up the upper part of the plant. It will send out new growth. Wintering indoors will give you a head start on a mature healthy plant for 2016 Spring. Also, aren't you concerned about bringing in bugs that could effect your other house plants? Are you going to use 'soapy' water on the greenery and drench the root ball? Or are these plants going to be isolated in a separate room? Thank you for sharing.

+LARK'S GARDENS yes we are going to cut back the upper plant, and after we transplanted them we drenched the the new pot. havent really had any bugs in the garden to begin with but that not saying we wont have them inside, we will see. they are going to be with the other house plants for the winter. if we have issues we will surely show it! thanks for the great questions!

I heard you say in another video you were gardening in Wisconsin and the pests are bad. I'm in Wisconsin and the last 2 wet summers have hurt our production. Where are you located now? Good information by the way.

Starry, You had so much good information in this video. However I was concerned about the point at which you diced up the tomato plants and put them in the layering. I would have wished you to mention that you should not do that with plants that have disease and also not to put the plant bits on the bed that you are going to plant next years tomatoes. All this to avoid diseases next year! Love your videos!

Chopping up tomato plants like that is asking for trouble anywhere except the driest and most arid conditions. Anything with warm humidity and moisture is going to allow blight to wreak havoc. Sacrifice a couple of cabbages and that will work a lot better.

OK. She is really cute. But if she was in my scout troop she would owe ten push ups. Why? Shoes untied. LOL. Serious side. I just put up a 10x12 greenhouse and being in El Paso I will be able to grow throughout the winter. One thing though, I will try to transplant one or two pepper plants. Blessings.

So do you not garden at all in the winter? I'm wanting to garden year round if possible to get us out of the dependence of the grocery store. But after watching your video I'm confused if with the back to eden gardening technique if that's possible? Since it seems you need to give it a break to rebuild the soil?
Or can you keep gardening and then when the winter garden is done you just relayer your garden bed? And then it's good? Or does it NEED the time to decompose a little?

    • @StarryHilder
