My favorite & only so far is a red leaf dissectum that I got for free from a tow yard. Someone was moving their prolly 20 year old tree, had a wreck & never claimed it. Was badly broken but with love & careful pruning, 5 years on it has a prominent place in our landscape & is stunning. Underplanted with lysimachia congestum & gold sedum, a painted fern & Caramel heuchera close by. I could have never afforded a tree that size, a gift from the plant Gods!

The first tree I planted after I moved from zone 4 Minnesota (Where Plants Suffer TM) was a Japanese maple. So beautiful , but not winter hardy. Now in zone 8 Virginia I have six so far: Orangeola, Twombley's Red Sentinel, Sango Kaku, Seiryu and Emperor 1. A must-have for next year will be either Scolopendrifoilum (green form) or Koto No Ito, These have bamboo-like leaves, perfect for the front door.
These are the most graceful garden trees.

So excited you guys covered Japanese Maples. I've always appreciated them, but became obsessed after Jim highlighted Mr. Maple in a video last year. Although my trees are small, my collection has grown quite a lot since then. My favorite so far is Mikawa Yatsubusa. I sure wish the arboretum would open up on weekends.

I ordered my Red Dragon from Mr. Maple last year. It is doing well. I am trying to learn how to train the branches like bonsai. I have much to learn!

Maples and dogwoods....my all-time favorite trees. Sadly I am a WV transplant in Central Texas and can not grow either here. 😢 Thanks for the beautiful tour.

I do believe you can grow japanese maples there, many in my FB groups from that state, you just need to protect from the hot afternoon sun

I just love the Mikawa Yatsubusa family of japanese maples. I have a Mikawa Yatsubusa, Mystic Mikawa, japanese princess, tattoo, Mayday, hupps dwarf and a Mikawa Yatsubusa seedling that I'll use for bonsai one day. Just love that lineage. I'm really loving my orange flame as well.

My hubby actually watched this one with me. He loves Japanese maples. So far we have only two in our garden; shi shi gashira and red Japanese maple. Both are small so we are very concerned about the imminent cicada arrival. Thanks for this wonderful video.

I don’t know what variety I have but it really had a growth spurt this year. I’m always a little nervous about pruning it but I like seeing more of the trunk. You should do a video on pruning.

My favorite Japanese maple overall is an upright green leafed cultivar named 'Glowing Embers'. It was selected and named for its autumn color, but we love it for year round beauty.

I have recently started growing JM's from cuttings and now have 12 which survived. My Dad gave me a Sycamore Maple sapling back in 2000 which we potted up and it has grown well. By 2016 it was about 12 feet tall. This May, I pruned it down to 2 feet leaving a side branch and it has responded very well with 5 new branches and many leaves and is 4 feet tall now in a large pot. I even have it appear in some of my YT videos as it's been around for so long :)

A recap in the fall would be great to display how the foliage changes. I have avoided acers in my garden due to the hot, dry, and extremely windy conditions of our area. Even with shade protection and attention to watering their foliage tends to fry. 🙁 Perhaps potting some would be good. Are there particular dwarf varieties?
