Use Vegetable Oil to Replace Chainsaw Bar Oil

  • Chainsaws need a constant supply of oil on the chain to keep it lubricated. The oil constantly drips from an oil reservoir onto the bar where it is sprayed out all over the environment.
    The constant spray of oil coming out of a chainsaw isn't good for the user or the environment. To mitigate some of this I decided to try a natural chain saw bar oil instead of using store bought petrochemicals.
    The oil I use is simply cooking oil. I use generic brand canola and it works well, is easy to clean, biodegradable, and much better for the environment than the oil sold for chain saw bars.

    I have used vegetable oil too and try to stay away for the ones that solidify when cold. Olive is a good example of one that does solidify. We recently got a freeze dryer and the waste oil from it makes excellent bar oil.

    I have no idea how things are in america, but her in germany most people use "organic" bar oil.
    It's 97% canola and 3% other stuff to make it more sticky.
    So yea, that stuff works.
    It only has a tendency to crystallize after longer periods of time,so there can be problems, when you don't use your saw for months or so.

    I will add to my comment that this happened to my Dolmar 7910. This saw introduces a lot of bar oil into the chain brake parts and around the clutch. Plus, the design of the brake makes it worse for oil to dry up in there like rubber. I don't think these aspects are true of all saws, so some saws might fare better with vegetable oil than others.

    Do not use cooking oil people. Its to thin to reduce friction heat.. you can buy a cheap 5 gallon bucket of hydraulic fluid and a tackifier ( Lucas) and you can make bar oil for a very long while. 30 sae motor oil and 2% tackifier is what most companies make their bar oil from. Hydraulic fluid is made for high heat metal on metal contact, the tackifier is to make the oil sticky and make full rotation of chain.

    Canola oil (rapeseed) is not a good lubricating oil. It would destroy a car engine. However if you have nothing else it's better than nothing. The cheapest engine oil is fine providing it has a similar viscosity (thickness). My one and only bottle of chain oil ever cost £6 odd for half a liter (half a pint ish). They can go forth and multiply. ( eff off).

    • @exoticcreature3059
      @exoticcreature3059 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I really don't get that argument. The reservoir absorbs engine heat and all the oil currently on the bar gets warm when the saw is in use. Meaning that once the heat soak is complete the oil thins out considerably and all tackiness is gone. You can see this happen as you use the saw if you have any doubts.

    • @exoticcreature3059
      @exoticcreature3059 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really don't get that argument. The oil reservoir absorbs heat from the engine plus the bar and chain itself get rather warm during use. The bar and chain oil is anything but tacky after being subject to a heat soak.

      I'm sure one or more of the many "proprietary additives " are supposedly for that, but it's not perfect. The idea is that, if you're going to be getting ANY sprayed oil on your skin, better it be the vegetable oil, which also happens to cost less

    The video never addresses whether this is safe long term for the life of the saw. I've been interchanging vegetable oil, aka soybean oil, and canola oil. My saw sat for months and I just picked it up to discover the chain brake and chain completely seized up with what feels like rubber from the dried vegetable oil (that was what I last used). Not sure if canola dries differently, but I sure hope I can get this mess cleaned up. It's all in between my chain brake and the clutch...yuk!

      Same thing happened to me. Haven’t used the saw for a couple months and the chain was seized up. Didn’t realize the vegetable oil would gum up that much. I wouldn't let this turn you off to vegetable oils. If I know I won't be using a saw for awhile I plan to drain the veggie oil out and run a bit of gas through the oil line (something that's recommended anyways) and store it dry.
