I bought my "87 Vmax in 1993 ,still have it . They are very sensitive to having the correct air pressure in the front tire . Low pressure = death wobble , ( Furber fix helps), .Over the years I went with progressive springs in the front and didn't need the air adjustment anymore . Aftermarket stator , later model rectifier ,( has fins for better cooling helped shitty charging system), later model starter ( 4 brushes instead of 2 on the earlier years).Solder the crimp in the main wire for an extra volt in charging . I still run the stock style Dunlop Qualifiers front and rear , never had a problem . I have gone through a few clutches and many rear tires . Because of the power and a shaft drive you have to be smooth in the corners because this bike will climb the rear gear a lot ! Heavy on the throttle will kick the back end out and coming off the throttle will reduce ground clearance also a lot . If you have passengers I would advise the back rest . Anytime I had my wife on the back , I would have to wack her leg to let her know to hang on tight if I was going to accelerate . Before the back rest , when I first showed her the Vboost I almost lost her . The only good thing about the seat is that about the same time my butt starts hurting , I'm almost out of gas , so have to stop. It can handle , you just can't ride it like a sport bike , those are like scalpels , the Max is like a sledge hammer.

Where'd you buy an 87? Yamaha didn't import any 87's to the USA....skipped that year.

Putting decent shocks on the back without sorting the front out is a waste of time. Put the later 93+ forks and yokes on, set of progressive springs, some decent rubber and you'll be scraping the pegs. It doesn't matter what mod's you do it's never going to handle like a sports bike. But handling is not what the Vmax is about, it''s about the Vboost. Mine has almost all the handling mod's done and it still scares me when i ride it hard, you learn where and where not to let the boost loose!
The Vmax is stupid, impractical and crazy, but its also more fun than any other bike I've ridden.

It's a 2001😂 the shocks that are now on it are a much stiffer which is better than the marshmello shocks it comes with, trust me put some ohlins on yours it changes how the bike acts entirely as far as the rear is concerned. And the front is gonna be rebuilt with progressive springs emulators and hyabusa brakes to boot as well as a new master because the one that's on it is just shot. But if you have any recommendations I'm more than willing to listen. It doesn't need to handle like a sport bike is just dont wanna have to fight it as much to put it into a corner and keep it there.

My 99 has a T Boost switch. VBoost that starts at 3000.
It's a different bike way crazier lower end.

That bike was well known for it's straight line stability at speed in drag racing circles so something is seriously wrong with it...bent frame, triple clamps, forks out of whack, bad bearing, something major...I'd park it until you figure it out. That bike is no joking matter, it'll kill you.
