My family and I are going on explorer of the seas during Christmas week. I’m extremely protective of my 3 kids, especially my daughter and only leave them with grandparents. How safe is adventure ocean program? It would be nice to have an hour or two of adult time, but I’m scared something will happen to one of them.

A holiday sailing, how exciting! We are also very protective - our son was being physically hit, pinched, and kicked by other kids while in a traditional school (on top of the usual verbal bullying because he is "different") and is now homeschooling through an online program. We don't use babysitters either, just GG (my mom). We were very anxious the first time our son went to Adventure Ocean (AO). We've now done over 20 cruises with Royal Caribbean since 2019 across 13 different ships in the fleet and have never been disappointed or worried for his safety or well-being after the first few minutes of his first session on our first sailing. The more information you can provide the staff on your child's needs, the better. They'll take the time on the first day to speak with you and your child(ren) and get to know their likes and dislikes a bit and share the knowledge with the rest of the AO staff. In addition to issuing the DECT phone to me to check in, they let me peek in and check and see how he was doing and would give me a nice overview of how he did, where he struggled, what they did to handle it and would ask for suggestions on how to better engage for the next session when I would pick him up. This has held true for AO on all the ships we've sailed on so far. We haven't been on Explorer yet, but all youth staff is thoroughly vetted and the training is standardized across the fleet.
Our son preferred the morning sessions because there were fewer children and less overall chaos and noise in the morning. The only exception was one evening session during an anniversary trip when we wanted to have an adult dinner just for one evening. When it got too loud and overwhelming, the staff was able to create a quiet space for him. We've only been called once by the staff and that was at his request because he got hungry and was ready for lunch. They do a range of activities - games, arts and crafts, trivia, physical indoor sports, movies, video games, etc. and let the kids choose based on interest. Our son really struggles with fine and gross motor skills and has hated arts and crafts since he was a toddler, but has proudly left AO with several arts and crafts projects. He's also won some prizes from the trivia and bingo they've played and the staff was phenomenal in trying to help facilitate conversations and relationships with other kids, which he really struggles with. I would have sacrificed my adult time in a heartbeat if he expressed even a moment of sadness, anxiety, or fear over going, but he LOVED the time he spent there and misses it now that he's aged out of the program.
We'd recommend you sign your kids up on the first day, speak with a staff member about your concerns, and start with a short session to see how they feel about things and go from there (his first time there was only 60 minutes because I was so worried and we worked up to a full 3 hour session). We'd also recommend filling out the special needs form in advance if any of your kids have special needs. Royal and their crew do an exceptional job outside of AO, too, if you fill out the form and let them know if you need a quiet space on boarding day or debarkation morning, seating arrangements for dining, warning before the muster alarm sounds, special foods, etc. (www.royalcaribbean.com/resources/guest-special-needs). Whatever you choose to do, please know we can relate to your worries. Constantly being "on" 24x7 takes its toll. Please take care of yourself, too. ❤️

Oh thank you! I wondered about the special needs stuff. My 7yr old is autistic.

We’ve only sailed with Royal Caribbean because of how wonderful and accommodating they’ve been with our son’s needs. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. We hope you have a great experience with them, too! ❤️

Glad it was helpful and apologies for the abrupt ending, but our son was struggling in the loud space. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. He LOVED the program and the staff were all so wonderful with him.😊
