Definitely check out The Weeknd’s older work...changed the entire landscape of Pop/R&B for the 2010s. Some of the best music of the decade on Trilogy and Kiss Land. No lie.
I've listened to about 80% of his work on his TH-cam channel, and frankly, other than this song, "In your eyes" and "Save your Tears" I don't find ANYTHING of his as being good previously. Starboy actually could have been good, but the vulgarity and his saying "ah" and "ya" FAR too much ruined the song, bad writing.
leeuniverse Did you bother to listen to his albums or did you just pick through his TH-cam channel? Lol come back to me when you listen to the Trilogy and Kiss Land in full, then we’ll talk about writing.
This song is actually currently still in the top 10 on Billboard lmao It broke the record for most weeks ever in the top 5, and is on track to potentially break the top 10 record as well "incredibly popular" is an understatement lol
The fact that The Weeknd wants to play on a MJ/Joker vibe and you nailed it on the head saying he had MJ theme mixed with comic booky shows both your understanding of the video and music and The Weeknd’s ability to portray this.
Hey man! So he had a few videos for this album that are meant to be watched in chronological order. 1. Heartless 2. Blinding Lights 3. After Hours (short film) 4. In Your Eyes 5. Until I Bleed Out If you loved this music video I promise you will love watching those!
I have to say: I could not believe that you haven't heard this before, it was/is literally the biggest song of 2020. And it is so AMAZING!!!! I've heard it so much on the radio that I really should have been tired of it by now, but no: every single time I get so pumped up and turn the volume up. He reallyhit the jackpot with this one. For the music video, I must say that coming from a tiny little north european country I'm SOOOO PROUD OF ANTON TAMMI, the super talented director of this mv!!! To all my fellow Finns out there, I think it is fair to say "TORILLE"!
The Weeknd is my favorite artist ever. Definitely go back and go through his discography if you can. He’s simply one of the best artists of this generation. He’s a legend.
"Wicked Games" was his first real hit back in 2011 when he released his first mixtape 'House of Balloons'. His trilogy of mixtapes from that year changed mainstream R&B forever, if not music in general.
The song definitely slaps sonically and at first I just thought it was a sappy love song. However what makes the song interesting lyrically is that he's actually singing about his relationship with drugs (a common theme in his music). If you re-listen to the lyrics with that in mind it adds a whole other dimension. Nice reaction btw, would love to see you cover tracks from the Weeknds early discography, its a different vibe but I have no doubt you'll love that too :)
I heard this in stores for months but I finally caught it with my phone out and I was able to search it just days before Superbowl. Been listening to it a lot the past few days. Definitely got the 80s vibe as well.
He performed this at the VMAS and was one of the few performances worth watching. It made NYC look like the great city it is. I got definite Dire Straits vibes in the opening few seconds. He is a fearless and creative performer.
This channel is so underrated. Great work! You should check out the whole discography of The Weeknd, he started as a very dark and gritty artist, and he is still a dark artist but adding more pop and mainstream sounds in his latest work, but he started as a dark R&B artist and his first albums are full of masterpieces. You should check it out. Plus, you'll get a lot of subscribers with him lol.
Thank you so much Clutch! That's such a nice thing to say! I'm so excited to check out more. I'm going to have to do it quick, I'm too tempted to just listen to more on my own lol. I should have more coming out this week from The Weeknd!
Also a metaller who was a child through the 80s - you nailed it. This track is a double-win as it not only is a great catchy tune but also captures a big chunk of a-Ha & MJ 80s vibe. Genius TBH.
You absolutely got a lot of his references. MJ, 80s pop music, comic book style of stories, literally everything, that means you're good at this listening to music thing lol but also he is a very solid artist I believe, slightly sexist on a lot of his songs, not slightly really but damn it I still love him hard. Great vid
And plus there’s a scene where he slows it all the way down and puts an array of colors in ski motion and if you’re on LSD while watching it you’ll experience a whole different side of it
I'm a metal guy as well and I also really enjoy Synthwave! I've found metal fans tend to be more eclectic than pop music fans. I have a wide variety of music in my collection. Everything from ABBA to ZZ Top.
This video is part of a series from his latest album. The two id recommend watching side by side are ‘after hours short’ and then ‘in your eyes’ (iye has serious 80s vibes!) because the videos are amazing!
The Weeknd’s videos are usually connected with each other as he releases them for different albums. I highly recommend going thru and watching them chronologically. I may start with the Trilogy album
Abel is a talented genius, and a tortured artist as well. He’s not afraid to show it, either. I have so much respect for him. Check out his early work in The Trilogy. It’s all one big story.
Yo... I discovered this song about a month ago then forgot about it (I have three elementary kids...) and found this song again a few days ago and I can't stop listening to this song. The way The Weeknd, Max Martin and Oscar Holter brought the 80s sound into the 21st century is amazing and the vocals by The Weeknd.... amazng!
Hello! Ive heard this song numerous times but never actually watched the video. It kind of gave me a "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" vibe. Loved the reaction. Looking forward to more.
This song reminds me of The Breakfast Club when they got high in the library and they were all dancing. If you've seen that movie that's probably where you've heard this music.
Yes we know it’s got that 80’s vibe but when you’re a person who grew up in the 80’s this was the everyday sounds and I get so nostalgic listening to this track whilst doing that 80’s two step dance...the 80’s was a wonderful time
I first heard this song on the radio and my first thought was... I'm an eighties kid., I wonder why I haven't heard this song before. And then I was like ohhh
Thank you! That's such a great compliment! That's honestly what I'm going for with this channel. I want people to feel like they are sharing this music with a friend! Thanks OMDAT!
Great review! Blinding Lights is my favourite song currently. And FYI regarding the MJ feel? You’re correct. The Weeknd has gone on record saying that Michael Jackson was a huge influence on him.
if you like Synthwave you should definetly check "I feel it coming" from The Weeknd ft Daft Punk. Plenty of Michael Jackson / Synthwave / 80s vibes in this song
First of all this was so cute to watch lol I loved the reaction. I’m into metal and stuff too but I own this on vinyl the whole album is amazing especially if you like 80s synth like I do too. Also I thought this was more Ah Has take on me and Save Your Tears is very Q Lazarus Goodbye Horses. Watch the album break down videos gave me more insight and hidden messages I didn’t get the first 100 times lol. Also Faith right after heartless leading into blinding lights is my favorite song but the whole album is like a cinematic masterpiece it’s good start to finish. I recommend to everyone!
I’d love to get my hands on a vinyl copy of this album. I think in another video of his I mentioned I thought it would sound great on vinyl. I’ve been slowly upgrading my audio setup and I’ve got a solid kit going for vinyl 🤘🏼🤘🏼
It has that new wave vibe definitely. I had the exact same feeling and reaction!!! haha. I am an 80's kid and into mostly alternative, punk and new wave.
As a synth lover myself i was so freaking happy with this whole retro neo synth wave trend over 2019-2020 and this album is absolutely amazing😍 i was absolutely furious when Grammys snubbed him this year😑
I was actually waiting to see your reaction during the slowed + reverb part! Plus your reactions to the entire aesthetic throughout the video were really genuine. 👏
Being a big rocker that was raised on country I grew a love for almost all genres of music, specifically catchy easy listening music that you can just vibe or dance to & no doubt this song definitely fits that. It's very catchy & you can't help but wanna bump your head to the beat. Plus the video is pretty cool, creative but simple. Definitely a good, well made song that all can enjoy
i know- caught up by the radio - but the weekend is great! wow synth music= love that - btw- wow- just thanks for loving great music- love ur reactions !
The 80's baby, bring it back.
*“Forward, must we only go. Backwards, must we not. Progress, we will not make.”*
You can't recreate an entire decade. You can only reimagine it, with all the tools of the future to improve it.
That's exactly what I told my husband. Love the 80s feel to his music.
@@buttbootynaked4455 shut up yoda
It’s def has hints of the 80s but it still feels new
Weeknd - Blinding Lights = longest Mercedes commercial ever LOL
Makes me want one lol.
Wrong model, though. Late 80'th SL-class would fit here better) Something like R129 body
Did you not listen to snow child ? “I just got a deal with Mercedes “ 😂
He actual has 2 mercedes commercial if u coumt this as one 😀
Hahahaha they must have made atleast some money or sales from this video
Definitely check out The Weeknd’s older work...changed the entire landscape of Pop/R&B for the 2010s. Some of the best music of the decade on Trilogy and Kiss Land. No lie.

If he likes Synth-wave then Kiss land should be the best album to react to

As a metalhead.. I can say Abel is a very gifted and talented singer. And yes syntwave/neoretro/vaporwave is fucking amazing.
he actually loves Micheal Jackson
I can definitely see some inspiration for Michael Jackson in his video but definitely the way he dresses
His music sounds like in the 80's
As a Metalhead including Black Metal, I respect the F out of this song.
This song is actually currently still in the top 10 on Billboard lmao
It broke the record for most weeks ever in the top 5, and is on track to potentially break the top 10 record as well
"incredibly popular" is an understatement lol
When his face went from somewhat confused to all smiley once the song actually started...
Thanks Brooke! Everyone got to watch me discover how amazing The Weeknd is lol. Mind blown!
@@MetalGuyReacts I'm hoping to start doing reaction videos on TH-cam as well! :)
I love how he has a confused reaction to the blood at the beginning while having a kill em all banner hanging in the background.
I love getting engulfed in a new story 🤪
It caught me off guard too
The fact that The Weeknd wants to play on a MJ/Joker vibe and you nailed it on the head saying he had MJ theme mixed with comic booky shows both your understanding of the video and music and The Weeknd’s ability to portray this.
i definitely recommend his song Wicked Games for a taste of his older stuff!!
Wicked games is gold. Only real feel that song .

Sooooooo true!!!
I'm a blues rock guy and I love this song. The groove is straight 80s techno new wave synth beat.
He has stated a few times that micheal Jackson is one of his idols. I’m glad you listened. I love The Weeknd
"Wicked Games" was his first real hit back in 2011 when he released his first mixtape 'House of Balloons'. His trilogy of mixtapes from that year changed mainstream R&B forever, if not music in general.

Yes its meant to sound like 80s synth, and yes he's absolutely emulating Michael Jackson....and doing a great job of it id say
the weeknd is so strong in the charts with this song and it deserves a golden nose for it
In your eyes by The Weeknd has synths as well

When he slowed it down really hit my heart and I'm from Texas where we like the music slow 😎🤘
The 21st century MJ right here! So grateful to be alive during the weekends biggest success period
