SC 8 daft punk may have done the instrumentals for him but Abel also produced it too plus Abel wrote the song as-well you gotta give credit where it’s due, not discredit.

Bro the synth/music production is by daft punk, which is the limelight of the song
this was a reinvention! the person that was killed at the beginning was abel (the weeknd) with his hairstyle from beauty behind the madness, which was the album that was released before starboy. with beauty behind the madness, abel was taking a more mainstream r+b approach as opposed to kissland and the trilogy mixtapes, but with starboy (starboy is an album too. the song you just reacted to is the lead single from that album), he goes even more mainstream and is almost making more pop-ish and radio friendly songs. so in the song he is reinventing himself from r+b to more of a pop star. a lot of fans didn’t like this reinvention so he went back to a more dark r+b sound like his older stuff on his mixtape that he released after starboy which was called my dear melancholy. and after that he released after hours, which you have heard two songs from. after hours is more 80’s synth, pop, and r+b mixed together. an interesting song for you to cover would be ‘rolling stone’ off of his mixtape called ‘thursday’. it was one of his first projects and the song is based around acoustics with minimal production. in the song he talks about how as he grows in popularity he will change the style of his music, and hopes that his fans will still support him. i loved your reaction as always! xotwod :)

I don’t see why people say startboy is overrated, personally I find it amazing. The vibe is so chill and safe, never a skip for me.

He does another song with Daft Punk, I Feel It Coming and it's just as amazing. Daft Punk really pulls that song into a timeless sound.
Every Album he reinvents himself. Its a common theme where he kills his old self in a video He calls each reinvention “Chapters” and his fans always know when hes going to begin a new chapter because he will wipe out his instagram posts, etc
Starboy was his 3rd studio album where he basically created his most pop/mainstream sounding album of his career so far that really exposed his talent to a lot of the newer audience. If you go to the beginning of his career you can see a big transformation in the style of music he made, all of which is fantastic imo, but his early music is very dark, depressing, but arguably the greatest music he's ever made. He's transformed into a pop star and the height of that pop sound was right here in this album. A lot of people weren't too aware of his music until this album (minus the few radio hits from BBTM his previous album)(and minus og XO fans lol✊✊). He cut his iconic hairstyle off in a way of reinventing himself to go with the new style Starboy displayed. But after this he has since gone back and made music more reminiscent of his older work, but done in a completely new way, cinematically better than ever before and a combination of all his styles into one. After Hours in my mind is his greatest display of artistry as a cohesive record, and he has said the same thing.
4th studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness was 3.

Abel basically reinvents himself in all of his albums. This was more of a radio play type of album but still one of my favorites. After Hours is his newest album which if absolutely phenomenal i highly recommend "faith" to listen to its a whole other level of fantastic. Ive been an XO fan for years and he is one of the best artists my ears have had the pleasure hearing lol
It basically shows how he killed his old self in the beginning and has brought out a new version. The starboy version of Abel (the Weeknd) represents him going Hollywood/ mainstream and selling out for everything you see and he talks about in the video (money, women, fame, cars, etc.) and in the song he says “look what you done” in the chorus which I think is him talking to his old self for going down this path of losing his true sound and his soul in exchange he became the biggest pop star artist of the generation. He chose the path of being a celebrity and the riches of the world but lost control and his true passion that’s what I get out of this video

supposedly the Weeknd made a deal with the devil to reach his fame in beauty behind the madness, from the 'i cant feel my face' music video where people were ignoring his talent up until the devil put him in flames and people started noticing his talent, he tries to kill the devil in tell your friends, but like things work with the devil he keeps making you come back to him just like in the hills music video.
In this music video Abel is killing his old self with the old hair, he takes the glowing cross and destroys his awards cabinet and beauty behind the madness awards as a symbolism of him wanting to take it all back just to free from the devil again. in real life he says how he's not allowed to regret his choices he needs to keep moving forward as things generally work with the devil you cant go back to how things were, in ordinary life if you listen/ read the lyrics after the first few lines you understand it all.
