"Secularism has been used to justify the subordination of women" is the provocative argument at the heart of the latest book by acclaimed cultural historian, scholar and author Joan Scott. "Sex and Secularism" explores how the separation of the state from religious institutions has allowed gender inequality to flourish. Scott explains her groundbreaking theories - contentious subject matter given French secular pride - in today’s Perspective segment.
“Sex and Secularism” has recently been translated into French under the title “La Religion de la Laïcité”.

This was such a civilised, stimulating conversation that made me think. Aggressive news presenter could learn a lot from this.

Highly controversial what Joan Scott is saying. She seems to be able to derive the general from the specific, but that is not a valid argument. A politicized French situation is in itself insufficient to disqualify secularism. That must be seen separately from each other.
It is about how secularism is described. If that is a political philosophy that means that all religions and beliefs are equal and this is guaranteed by the state under the laws (including fundamental rights for individuals, including minorities and women) and institutions of the state of law, then this already indicates that Joan Scott's labels and definitions are not linked together.
It may well be that in certain countries secularism is 'misinterpreted' or even hijacked by the ruling power and is the subject of political debate, as in France or India, but that still does not justify the proposition to disqualify secularism as philosophy and put it on a par with Islam. The abstraction level of Islam and secularism is completely different.
The trick to add the adjective ‘hardline' is a slight excuse and does not make Joan Scott's observations any more credible. She does not reason validly and allows conclusions to be drawn from arguments that are not the essence but secondary phenomena.

She is a french historian who encapulates how France has not yet decolonialised their view of others. She problematises the perspective that laicite = equality in France. There are considerable problems with France imperialist lens in this regard, and a lack of gender equality underexamined because of a pride that seeks to deminish another and does not look inward. You should read her books.

4:45 she doesnt doubt that individual opportunity will lead to more equality of the sexes, but thinks if people are left to be free to make their own decisions, we will never reach equality.
