  • I became a cynic and it's the worst thing I ever did - on being young and jaded
In this video I wanted to chat a bit about the prevalent culture of cynicism online, and how I - myself - used to have this mentality. I find myself to be not only happier, but more empowered and resilient now that I have a different approach and mindset in regards to my life. I was inspired by the worlds of Rainn Wilson in a podcast interview he did in regards to cynicism, I do not agree with him on everything and don't necessarily agree with everything in this podcast (it does not reflect my viewpoints or personal beliefs) - but I did find it inspiring! You can check it out his personal story by looking up Rich Roll Rainn Wilson interview "We need a spiritual revolution" and skip to the time stamp "foster joy and squash cynicism" at 1 hour 24 minutes in.

I’m a psychotherapist and most of my younger clients (teens and twenties) have such a negative view of the state of the world. They truly believe they have been born in the worst times the world has ever experienced. I think the apocalyptic tone of the media (especially since the early 2000s/post 9/11) has a lot to do with this and it’s a flame fueled by social media. I find it’s causing many people to feel more doomed and helpless than inspired to make at least a little change. They are simply overwhelmed with negativity and try to find control in unhealthy ways.

Yes, agree....the media has a great impact on society....Of course we cannot stick our heads in the sand and deny all that surrounds us, BUT....there is much that is good and positive in the world that is not reported....The old adage "Bad news sells' is prominent more now than ever. We have to choose to be aware of the good that is always present and be a source of that goodness individually and collectively. It starts individually with integrity and a mindset that we are all responsible for our actions and our impact on others. A small candle of light can light even the darkest room. (Char)

That, plus the world burning down with climate crisis, wars on our european doorstep, overtechnologization, corruption and horrible crimes in religious institutions, the rise of nationalist, conservative and fascist politics...

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.
“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”
He continued, “The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Hello!! I hope you are all well 💖please feel free to share your perspectives down below! I'm only speaking for myself and know there are many other ways of looking at things.
To be clear I don’t consider myself a cynical person anymore, I like to instead focus my energy on things that make me feel more fulfilled. Putting time in creativity, familial relationships, and passions puts everything into perspective. I find that if I am ever feeling cynical, I remember that by thinking this way I am willingly participating in a negative cultural mindset, and being part of the very thing that made me cynical in the first place 😂 and I personally want to choose hope and joy and foster resilience in the face of hardships and fears, not a bitter ego (this is all my own experience, I’m not saying this applies to you). At least, applying this has helped me feel healthier and happier and re-train my brain to think differently :) maybe it will provoke some ideas in you!

The truth is we only have control over what we do. It’s almost impossible to change someone’s mind on anything BUT, we can inspire those who choose to look, ask, seek. That is beautiful, and the very reason not to become a cynic.

It’s so hard to see and admit to our own character flaws, and many people never get to this point of self-introspection in their life, continuing to hurt themselves and/or others. You are obviously someone who went through a huge butterfly transformation in your life, and I find that very inspiring as I left a career of many years that was never my field of choice to pursue more artistic, family, and personal aims in life a year ago. For me I just keep hearing the universe tell me to slow down and wait. Take things as they come. Also, I read your book recently! As an aspiring writer, I very much enjoyed it - both your prose and poetry. You are a wonderful painter, but also a talented writer - enjoy!

Its a age of Gog and Magog ( Ashkenazi European one-eyed Jews) and Masons the followers of False Messiah ( Who will be the king of the world for the short period in the coming soon in Jerusalem). This is why everywhere is going through devastated war all over the world led by imposter Antichrist from Washington DC and other national international agencies like UN, EU, CIA, FBI, Pentagon etc. Only one they are safe those who are truly religious because they are protected by God. Your government and media is totally lie to you and your people. Never believe in them.

The audio was plenty crisp - it's nice to sit on the porch with you. I think many people go through a cynical stage in their college or early 20s - it's all about finding out how the world really is, studying and learning about it, feeling good about your acquired knowledge, and then - oops - looking harshly at those without it. But then you eventually catch sight of yourself in a mirror, re-evaluate your attitude, and grow into humility and understanding. But most people take at least 5 years longer than you - I know I did!

I always come back to Paola's video whenever I feel negative and jealous of others (usually after scrolling through instagram and notice the hustle life my more/differently successful friends). As I slowly begin to appreciate my own life, at its own pace, - suddenly I feel scared of not hustling enough or working harder to be where they (the others) are. Like is it okay to just be where I am and not be as famous/pretty/rich/etc as my friends on IG? Sometimes it's easier to go back to feeling content and grateful as I am but sometimes, it's not as easy.. But then, I come here and re-learn that it is okay to work at my pace. Slowly but never stagnant. Thank you again, Paola

If I can’t use something …perhaps someone else can… yes… I am listening to your videos from the beginning onward…and you have inspired me! I am learning Slow Stitching…and have ordered items from a shop in London. I await the project and it being a new way to express myself and of gift giving! I will look for vintage fabrics to complete my projects in thrift shops! Thank you and God Bless!

    I needed to hear this.
My goal this year is to work on being humble and to shake off the past hurts and anger and disappointments. All the things that have made me cynical and negative over the years.
I was brought up to think that humility meant weakness. After 50 years of believing that, I’m now on a quest to rewire my brain and, seeing videos like this, confirm the accuracy of my quest.
Thank you for being open and transparent. ❤

I was so enthralled spending time with you in nature and on your porch that I was unaware of any degradation in sound quality. I, too have risen above the earlier chapter of my life spent being hyper critical and judgmental. It is such a freeing feeling to have those attitudes out of my life. In that empty space grew compassion and grace.

Thank you for today’s episode. My heart breaks because we have the ability to be social with people on the other side of the planet, yet, we are more angry and less willing to listen. I wish we all could look deeply inside and see our own flaws and prejudices that will, if we allow them, make us feel superior to others. Your channel offers an oasis of thought and refreshment for a weary soul. So blessed by your many gifts and caring nature. Luna is precious! Your artwork is stunning. 🎨🦋💐💕🙌🏻

I remember my cynical and angry days all to well I'm afraid. When I was younger, I felt that I could use my voice and energy to push people (former students and family) into where I though they needed go. If they objected, my anger would make an appearance I'm afraid. What I've learned since is that my approach was not appropriate or successful in the long run. In recent years, I've come to terms with the errors of my younger self. I've also learned that my memories were somewhat wrong. Getting feedback from my former students has allowed me to see that I actually had a positive influence on many of them. I am glad that this has happened. Thank you for another thought provoking video! I love the outdoor setting you used too. Have a great week!

I understand what you are talking about. I used to go through the cynical fase when I was on my studies too. And I didn't realize that I am so negative until a friend once told me. After that I started to pay attention on my thoughts and step by step I changed my mind set. It was about 15 years ago. Recently, I friend bitterly told me: You are always acting like you do not have problems in life. I was astonished. Because that was not true, I as everybody else have a lot of challenges. But I' ve realized that I do not make drama of them. Your videos are beautiful and inspirative as ever❤

'Life begins again in the forest' Yes, it's true! I have witnessed devastating forest damage that rocked NSW in Australia a few years ago (quite scary). In spite of that, I watched the bush grow back slowly, steadily, beautifully dense. A thicker bush than before. I love this about nature. Thank you as always for your beautiful video and work involved in getting that out to us to view. Love them. 💖 I appreciate that Paola is humbled by mistaken beliefs she had earlier in life, however the art of being strong enough to admit it and share it with others so others may benefit, for me, it is nothing less than a noble act.

I'm very cynical as well. I think I've lived too long and seen too much of the society's underbelly. We just have to keep working on ourselves. One thing that really gives me peace is music and I love the work of Greg Maroney and Marshall Styler as well as Mozart and Chopin.

It is incredibly hard not to be cynical in these challenging times but you're right, positivity is a choice. It's never been an easy world and so many people wear their hurts as armour. If only we had more understanding people but that is a trend and it is happening. More and more of us are choosing the positive road and support each other through difficulties. Don't ever characterize cynicism as a character flaw though, it was part of your growth process. You are still so young and it's lovely to see such maturity and wisdom. That is a gift of living a conscious, more slow paced life. Thank you for your videos and art. I love your small, mobile art kit. Who makes that?

This is one of my favorite videos of yours, Paola. You have touched a part in all of us (cynicism) which was at one time in all of us, or that part with which we are still struggling. For me, God has used your videos to help me better connect with my authentic self - that peaceful, serene, gentle, kind spirit within me that I was born with. Sometimes the rigors & negativity of this world chided & scolded that quiet, gentle, & loving part of me. But now, that's the space where I choose to live. Thank you, Paola, for the loving peacefulness you present to us; a peacefulness thousands of us enter in with you. How unselfish you are to share that part of your world with us. Thank you.

    "Life will begin again."
    --- The Cottage Fairy
    "Life finds a way."
--- Jeff Goldbloom, from "Jurassic Park"
Watching you paint put me in mind of James Audubon and his work illustrating and cataloging America's wildlife, both plants and animals. It also reminded me of how much I used to love to paint.
    Thank you. ❤
I'm afraid that I have grown cynical. I don't know if it comes with age, a collection of bad experiences, or a combination of both of these.
The subject came up once in my school's copier room. After a fellow teacher and I heard another colleague complain about having a bad week and how it's hard to remain optimistic in the face of all the bad stuff going on, I turned to my friend and said, "I used to be an optimist."
He noted my use of past tense and asked, "What happened?"
"I became a teacher," I said with a deadpan delivery.
He stared at me in surpriss for a second, and then he started laughing out loud and shaking his head, drawing stares from the office staff through the open door connecting the two spaces.
I even went so far as to buy a T-shirt printed with the words:
"I used to be a people person. Then people ruined it."
Since I was forced to take early retirement (another source of aggravation and cynicism), I've slowed things down, devoted myself to my writing, and I've had less contact with people. Thanks to that, my blood pressure has dropped down into the normal range again, and my cynicism has abated some (but not completely tbh). I even managed to put a liitle bit of optimism into my novels (though some of my comments on some TH-cam videos have been completely cynical because the videos remind me of bad experiences).
Your videos have begun to bring me a feeling of peace and an easing of my cynicism.
    Thank you. ❤ ❤ ❤
