David Smith its not rendering for you, its loading the world for you. your computer still calculates the 3d points to 2d, so it can draw everything but without loading the world, so it barely has any performance problems
The white box behind the icon I believe is caused by older Windows OS's not supporting 32-bit alpha channel icons. I think XP was the first to support those. Could also be why the taskbar icon is wonky and inverted.

I've noticed the opposite, that an older game sometimes doesn't run on XP because it has a too new graphics card. All the pixel formats in the icon are true color with alpha transparency, which Win2K can't handle. I think Microsoft requires or recommends that lesser color depths be included for compatibility, but they are not in the MC icon, and if they are included they are usually crudely downconverted anyway (instead of being alternate, simplified versions of the basic symbolic concept)... So it's usually just a compliance box to tick, which MC devs chose not to care about.

Resource Hacker FX will show all the icon versions in an exe file. dn742485 for Vista is clear that 8-bit must be included but doesn't require it to be good quality. Right now, I have a new computer (Intel Core i7-6700 3.40 Ghz 8 CPU, 8 GiB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960 on an 128 GB SSD with Windows 10), but my previous computer was a Fujitsu Siemens Scenic E600 i865G with an Intel Pentium IV 2,66 Ghz, 1014 MiB RAM, an Integrated Intel Graphics card with 64 MiB vRAM on a 40 GB hard drive running Windows 2000 Professional. I have to say, Minecraft ran pretty well on my Windows 2000 computer. It was extremely laggy and unplayable right after start, but after putting all visual settings on "low" and "disabled", it seemed to be playable, but every 10 seconds, he lagged a bit. This was still not ideal, but after installing OptiFine, Minecraft ran smoothly on my computer! After a while (2012, I think), I needed more space on my Windows 2000 computer, so I installed an 2000 GB external hard disk, but it only supported WIndows XP and higher, so I was forced to upgrade to Windows XP. Then (2013) we got a new router which Windows XP couldn't catch, so then I was forced to upgrade to Puppy Linux. BUT, that computer slowly began to break (sound coming from just one speaker; didn't always accept USB input), so in 2015, I was forced to buy myself a new computer. And honestly, I really like the way Windows 2000 works. The way everything works and feels, with the old start-up screen, start-up sound and themes, are in my opinion just way better than Windows 10's. But, there are also practical things Windows 2000 does better, for example: 1. On Windows 10, I regularly get an "Permission Denied" because the programmes I run, are run as "User" by default, even though I am the Administrator, resulting in me having to restart those programmes and manually instruct them to be run as Administrator, which is frustrating and consumes more time than necessary, while Windows 2000 just runs everything as Administrator by default. 2. Windows 2000 has a very powerful search engine. In Windows 10, if you have a folder named "wsession" and you type in "session", it doesn't find the folder, because you have to include a star to tell Windows 10 that there might also be characters before the "session": " *session ". In Windows 2000, typing in "session" is enough to find "wsession". 3. In Windows 2000, when you are on the C-drive, D-drive or another drive your computer might have with Windows Explorer, a beautiful, black-and-white 3-dimesional diagram is displayed to show you how much space is left, both in relative as absolute sense. In Windows 10, you have to right-click the drive in Windows Explorer and click "Properties" to get such a diagram. 4. Windows 10 is forcing its users to have a password, which is a waste of time for me, because I am the only person using this computer. Despite of that, I have to type in my password after each time I boot the computer OR if I had been inactive for more than 15 minutes. In Windows 2000, setting up a password is optional. 5. In Windows 2000, Microsoft Paint is a very simple and straight-to-the-point programme for drawing and picture editing. In Windows 10, it's an overly complicated program with exactly the same options, but all of them are hidden under different tabs, making simple picture edits a pain in the ass in Windows 10. I even manually installed the old Microsoft Paint in Windows 10, because the new one just sucks. 6. Windows 2000 has one of my favourite games (Minesweeper) by default. Windows 10 hasn't. You can manually install Minesweeper in Windows 10, but it will have advertisements, stupid animations, sounds and pop-ups after each game. Quickly restarting the game by pressing F2 takes five seconds instead of just one quick tap, as in Windows 2000. Had Windows 2000 still be supported, both by modern hardware and software, I would have installed it on this computer. I love that operating system. It's my favourite operating system of all time, since it doesn't have the instability of the Windows 9x-series (95/98/ME) since it's NT-based, BUT, it yet also doesn't have the ugly interfaces and bloat of later NT-based Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10). Windows 2000 basically has the best of two worlds: the beautiful old user interface, yet, still stable. :-D

I ran it on my laptop with these specs: Intel Core i5 2430M 2.4GHz, 8GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive (HDD) because I don't have enough money to buy an SSD. My computer is old (My dad bought it about 9 or 10 years ago, when I was a kid.) so it works fine for me, but I still don't like the way Windows 10 works. When I truy to play games on Windows 10 and Windows 7(Two computers, but same specs, video card GT525M 1GB), I turned on MSI Afterburner and see the FPS in Windows 7 is lower than Windows 10 but Windows 10 is more stuttering when I playing GTA V. My computer is just for play games so I will just explaining my opinion about Windows 10. (Sorry for my bad English).
Wow, it runs minecraft better than my last computer ran it back in 2009, with XP SP3, and eventually windows 7 the following year. The game might have been a lot less optimized back then, being in pre/Alpha
The reason for the white box is due to alpha channels being different in xp and up. 2000 and down to windows 95, alpha channels were handled differently.

Windows 7 is great, but takes alot more RAM to run than Windows 2000 and XP. I personally think Windows XP is the best. But Windows 2000 and even 98 are awesome too. I had a Windows 98, but, somethings happened (not to the computer, but other things I don't want to share) and I wish everyday that I still had it. And fuck Windows 8 and 10. I'd rather use the first version of Windows that used NT technoleagy than to use 8 or 10; alot less spyware LOL). If you don't know, NT stands for New Technoleagy.

It was extremely laggy and unplayable right after start, but after putting all visual settings on "low" and "disabled", it seemed to be playable, but every 10 seconds, he lagged a bit. This was still not ideal, but after installing OptiFine, Minecraft ran smoothly on my computer!
After a while (2012, I think), I needed more space on my Windows 2000 computer, so I installed an 2000 GB external hard disk, but it only supported WIndows XP and higher, so I was forced to upgrade to Windows XP. Then (2013) we got a new router which Windows XP couldn't catch, so then I was forced to upgrade to Puppy Linux. BUT, that computer slowly began to break (sound coming from just one speaker; didn't always accept USB input), so in 2015, I was forced to buy myself a new computer.
And honestly, I really like the way Windows 2000 works. The way everything works and feels, with the old start-up screen, start-up sound and themes, are in my opinion just way better than Windows 10's. But, there are also practical things Windows 2000 does better, for example:
1. On Windows 10, I regularly get an "Permission Denied" because the programmes I run, are run as "User" by default, even though I am the Administrator, resulting in me having to restart those programmes and manually instruct them to be run as Administrator, which is frustrating and consumes more time than necessary, while Windows 2000 just runs everything as Administrator by default.
2. Windows 2000 has a very powerful search engine. In Windows 10, if you have a folder named "wsession" and you type in "session", it doesn't find the folder, because you have to include a star to tell Windows 10 that there might also be characters before the "session": " *session ". In Windows 2000, typing in "session" is enough to find "wsession".
3. In Windows 2000, when you are on the C-drive, D-drive or another drive your computer might have with Windows Explorer, a beautiful, black-and-white 3-dimesional diagram is displayed to show you how much space is left, both in relative as absolute sense. In Windows 10, you have to right-click the drive in Windows Explorer and click "Properties" to get such a diagram.
4. Windows 10 is forcing its users to have a password, which is a waste of time for me, because I am the only person using this computer. Despite of that, I have to type in my password after each time I boot the computer OR if I had been inactive for more than 15 minutes. In Windows 2000, setting up a password is optional.
5. In Windows 2000, Microsoft Paint is a very simple and straight-to-the-point programme for drawing and picture editing. In Windows 10, it's an overly complicated program with exactly the same options, but all of them are hidden under different tabs, making simple picture edits a pain in the ass in Windows 10. I even manually installed the old Microsoft Paint in Windows 10, because the new one just sucks.
6. Windows 2000 has one of my favourite games (Minesweeper) by default. Windows 10 hasn't. You can manually install Minesweeper in Windows 10, but it will have advertisements, stupid animations, sounds and pop-ups after each game. Quickly restarting the game by pressing F2 takes five seconds instead of just one quick tap, as in Windows 2000.
Had Windows 2000 still be supported, both by modern hardware and software, I would have installed it on this computer. I love that operating system. It's my favourite operating system of all time, since it doesn't have the instability of the Windows 9x-series (95/98/ME) since it's NT-based, BUT, it yet also doesn't have the ugly interfaces and bloat of later NT-based Windows versions (XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10). Windows 2000 basically has the best of two worlds: the beautiful old user interface, yet, still stable. :-D
Yeah, I'm using Windows 10 and sometimes it sucks for me. I ran it on my laptop with these specs: Intel Core i5 2430M 2.4GHz, 8GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive (HDD) because I don't have enough money to buy an SSD. My computer is old (My dad bought it about 9 or 10 years ago, when I was a kid.) so it works fine for me, but I still don't like the way Windows 10 works. When I truy to play games on Windows 10 and Windows 7(Two computers, but same specs, video card GT525M 1GB), I turned on MSI Afterburner and see the FPS in Windows 7 is lower than Windows 10 but Windows 10 is more stuttering when I playing GTA V. My computer is just for play games so I will just explaining my opinion about Windows 10.

Wow, it runs minecraft better than my last computer ran it back in 2009, with XP SP3, and eventually windows 7 the following year. The game might have been a lot less optimized back then, being in pre/Alpha

The reason for the white box is due to alpha channels being different in xp and up. 2000 and down to windows 95, alpha channels were handled differently.

Windows 7 is great, but takes alot more RAM to run than Windows 2000 and XP. I personally think Windows XP is the best. But Windows 2000 and even 98 are awesome too. I had a Windows 98, but, somethings happened (not to the computer, but other things I don't want to share) and I wish everyday that I still had it. And fuck Windows 8 and 10. I'd rather use the first version of Windows that used NT technoleagy than to use 8 or 10; alot less spyware LOL). If you don't know, NT stands for New Technoleagy.

I have Windows 7 running in my MacBook :) I'm very thankful they added that feature before I bought it. I still watch videos on my phone. Which is the Galaxy Note 4. Windows XP was quite good and can be in good price for some who can't buy good pc's.
