Cauda equina syndrome is a serious neurological condition that occurs when the nerves at the lower end of the spinal cord, known as the cauda equina, are compressed or damaged. The cauda equina is a bundle of nerves that extends from the bottom of the spinal cord and provides sensation and motor function to the legs and pelvic organs.
The symptoms of cauda equina syndrome can include severe lower back pain, weakness or numbness in one or both legs, loss of sensation in the buttocks, genital area, and inner thighs, bowel or bladder dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.
Cauda equina syndrome is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent paralysis, loss of bowel and bladder control, and other complications. Treatment typically involves surgical decompression of the affected nerves to relieve pressure and prevent further damage.
Causes of cauda equina syndrome can include herniated discs, spinal stenosis, tumors, spinal infections, and trauma to the spine. It can occur at any age but is more commonly seen in older adults.
