The Nike Mercurial line has represented the pinnacle in football boot technology since 1998, so whenever a new model gets released, everyone expects something new. For 2021, we got just that, a football boot that both builds on the same concept, while also introducing some new tech that performs the part. At least that's the case for the FG version. The AG version, well that's a different story.
In today's video we take a closer look at the Nike Mercurial Vapor 14 Elite with the "new" AG stud pattern. It looks great, and if you're not all that familiar with the history of Mercurial tech, you might even be impressed, but the reality is that the "new" AG stud pattern is almost exactly a copy and paste of the one they had 7 years ago! I talk about whether or not this is a good or bad thing, and how well suited this new AG stud pattern is suited for use on artificial grass. Do you think this was the right move by Nike, or just lazy?

In my opinion this stud Plate just looks cheap and the studs also look very plasticy and not that Premium than the AG Soleplate from the Vapor 13s
May be is because both AG/FG studs are plastic...
@@waynelee8327 Yeah I am aware of that but you can let the plastic look cheap an as I said less premium or you can give them more of a premium look. Colors and the shape of the studs are also very important and in my opinion the Studs look way more premium on the old AG Pro Soleplate

AG soleplates are way better feeling on AG, helps massively with stopping and turning. Glad they have brought this back.

It’s a modified version of the pattern 7 years ago. Adidas’ soleplate has been the same for basically the same amount of time. So you could say you feel so old every year you see their cleats.
I liked the ag soleplate for the last versions cuz you can wear them on both grass and ag like Neymar did. Now Merc wearers have to buy two separate pairs again.
I liked the previous AG-pro as well because it was less aggressive than the FG for crappy fields that had little to very short grass
@@carlosfarina3665 I totally agree. I bought some Elite Superflys with AG-Pro stud plate from Europe (America did not offer them at the time) and I could use them on any field I found myself playing on (except for crappy dirt fields.. which in reality just isn’t good for any type of clear lol)

@@jacobbynum15 for crappy dirt fields you need the HG sole plate but you can only get those in Japan.
Huge downgrade for me personally, had the old and the newer ag stud pattern and last year’s were a perfect balance of traction and forgiveness. I always slipped in the 2013 design.
I beg to differ really, I found the Mercurial 13 AG pattern to aggressive for artificial grass. If the surface was in pretty good condition, it was a good shoe, but still was hooking to the fibres sometimes. But if the surface was less than perfect and short, it was noticeable right away and hooking got worse. Only downsize for me from this new studs is they look very cheap, but again, I don't care as long as they work better.
@@MoRRsZLaSu That’s fair, I’ve been pretty fortunate to play almost exclusively on newer surfaces so that’s probably made a big difference.
On some artificial grasses(older generation) , studs broke with the previous ag plate, so this is a W in my opinion
I prefer this AG-R soleplate and the sprint frame AG soleplate from Adi because not only are they safer they offer a much more natural feel compared to balded stud patterns

I think Nike saw a growing demand for AG Pro boots. After all, They feel better, more realistic to use more durable, they have a premium look and you can use them on both, AG and natural grass. It probably was cannibalizing the FG line. So they gave you these new ugly studs that seem to be much more comfortable, forcing you to buy them only if you play on AG.

I recently purchased a pair of these to wear on both AG and FG pitches as I play regularly on both surfaces. I know they’ll perform well on AG but what about FG Josh? Will they perform as well as the Vapor 13/Superfly 7 AG boots on FG pitches?

I have worn the vapor 14 pro's twice and each time the first 10-15minutes my feet hurt like hell then it goes over. Idk why but its fuckng annoying
professional players can wear AG on grass because of how quality the pitch is if you play with a local football team you must be a complete idiot to wear AG studs on grass the state of the pitches you will have no traction what so ever

Can you still use these on natural grass? Will the studs get damaged?
I actually like this soleplate. This is Nike actually listening to the consumer. The previous AG-Pro was a great conical FG stud pattern. Old soleplate was better for great AG pitches, players who swithced between AG and FG, and for those who played in natural grass but wanted a conical stud pattern. Must of us don´t play in top pitches. This is better for not top quality AG pitches. Previous soleplate was a better performer for the privileged but not for the majority. This is not change for the sake of change. Is changer for the sake of the majority.

Superfly 4 ag was my favorite ag plate, so this a plus for me. Ag plate on the last superfly was fine too, so really not a big deal either way. Only difference when on feet for me, is the extra studs near the front inside part of the foot when rolling/pulling the ball, otherwise pretty identical IMO.
Hi SR4U! Do you have any idea if Nike intends to make a Turf version of the Elite Superfly 8 please?
ag is less popular in the US/North America because we have such widespread modern turf (i.e., the rubber pellet stuff that is deep enough for FG)

Since its either impossible or extremly expensive to get a decent pair of ag cleats in Canada. Would you recommend wearing copas on turf? (alot of my buddies do this)

I do personally really enjoy the AG-Pro soleplate found on the Vapor 13 Pros that I have, but I am not mad to see this make a return. I still have the Veloce ii AG model that had this old-new pattern and I only retired those after I had the toe area starting to severely separate. If I didn't already have the vapor 13 pro ag I would be down to get these without any hesitation. A little note on me, I've had acl injuries and do notice a significant difference going from fg to any pure ag patterns when on turf. Me knees don't ache nearly as much and I try to push proper footwear for the surface with all the players I coach.
I had the old (now new?) ag pattern on the Magista Opus. Solid traction and zero stud pressure. No objections here from someone who plays exclusively on AG.

To be honest, this looks so cheap .... But definitely good and as AG stud pattern better than the AG-pro. despite that I was sure about the AG-pro stud pattern. the AG-pro studs were perfect for me as I play on both artificial grass and firm ground.
Definitely nike 100% did this to make us buy 2 pairs instead of 1. My AGpros are great on even poor quality AG pitches and can use on grass. I will be gutted if they use this on the tiempo 9s
Does the quality of the AG field make a difference? I’ve been buying the previous AG-pros (on eBay since they’re not available in the US) for my daughter who plays on nice, relatively new artificial grass fields, with plenty of rubber. She likes those studs a lot but needs new ones. These just seem so different. Seems like everyone else on her team wears FG studs. I’d hate for her to be sliding around because she can’t get traction, but I also want to save her knees. Thoughts? Who has worn these on nice AG fields and how do they feel?

this AG sole is alot more forgiving in terms of injuries, this soleplate would 100% help on not ripping tendens. I have 100% recomend this soleplate. If u want your daugther to not get injuries wich is really typical with more agressive pattern. Ive been playing with Vapors/superflyes since i was 11 years old, im now 25 so iknow.
Just bought a pair of 13s with ag stud patter I prefer this as I play on both ag/fg and they were a steal at just over £100

The ag pro soleplates on my vapor 11s and 13s have lasted a lot of games and have the best feel on 4g than any other boot I've tried. I liked the black colourway of the 14 but I'll have to give it a miss based on this "new" sole, shame

Bro lowkey pissed, the vapor 13s AG plate was FIRE. I Liked it better than the FG for grass and AG, now I gotta buy two pair. (not a completely terrible thing tho, i just liked the AG on grass better)

Vapor 9, 10, & 14 Superfly 4 & 8 = AG
Vapor 11-13 Superfly 5-7 = AG-Pro
I think Nike going back to the more specialized AG stud pattern is a good thing because most people play on really worn out AG fields, but I think if you play on a nice brand new AG field the AG-Pro stud pattern is good. The people saying that they preferred the AG-Pro sole plate because they could get away with just buying one pair of boots for both natural grass and AG fields aren’t exactly getting the best of both worlds; they would still be missing out on the traction that the FG studs have as opposed to the AG-Pro studs when playing on real grass and might even be having too much traction when playing on artificial grass(depending on the condition of the AG pitch). So those people will have a bad FG experience and might even have a dangerous AG experience. Now, for people that can only afford one pair of boots, they will have a pair that is really good for one type of surface.
I was very happy wearing AG pro mercs on crappy fields since my ankles are very weak, seems like I’ll have to give a chance to Adidas AG plates

An absolute miss!! The AG sole plate from the mercurial 11 until 13 was safe for AG fields and good for FG. This new stud plate looks like a counterfeit one. No need to find any advantage for this....

Sorry to tell you Josh, this has not been seen 7 years ago. Maybe in the USA and Canada, but in the Asian market, where turf fields are common, Nike has always kept producing this study pattern.

Honestly this 14 vapor stud pattern is probably much safer the ag pro stud pattern I was running normally in a game and somehow still sprained my ankle because the studs got stuck to the ag grass I was like wth

The classic Morelia stud pattern would be better suited for use on AG.

I like this soleplate because the previous soleplate was too aggressive. If this soleplate does not feel right on grass that means it serves its purpose for AG fields. I rather have a pure AG soleplate than a mixture of AG/FG. Safety is priority to me on AG fields. I feel like the AG-pro is too much like the FG.

Does anyone know if the new upper will stretch like the old Teijin synthetic. I have one foot 1/2 size larger than the other. I normally purchase boots to fit my smaller foot and use stretchers for the boot that goes on my larger foot.

Nah man I’m ngl Nike is kind of ruining the mercurial series a bit. Obviously it’s still a great boot but it went from hands down the best speed boot in the 13s to kind of average compared to the X ghosted and Ultras. At least make the superfly flyknit cuz those high tenacity yarns were something else. Just my opinion tho

They're less than ideal in terms of traction on any surface that isn't artificial grass. I wouldn't recommend these for use on FG surfaces.
Can I wear tiempo FG elite on AG ? Avoiding injury or pre mature boot falling apart
I've worn tiempo fg on ag and the boot starts pealing at toebox and separates slightly. Still holds together but don't recommend for injury prevention. Too much pressure on knee and ankle from pitch
Also, ag is much more comfortable on an ag pitch. Ag boot works on fg pitch as well, but doesn't stick as well in the rain. Depends on what you want, budget wise I would get ag model if u switch frequently between pitches
Supposedly Chelsea microwaves their boots. That can’t be right. They even said there’s a timer, but doesn’t all microwaves have a timer. I’m assuming it’s not a microwave. I’m afraid kids might blow up their microwaves if there’s any metal in your boots, or totally damage your boots.
