Can you imagine the people in the audience that evening. Thinking they were going to see a silly comedic talk show and have the privilege of watching perhaps one of the most iconic live performance's of all-time. Very fortunate indeed.
This performance is as iconic as Freddi Mercury in Live Aid. Both arguably best live performances of all time. And, ironically......both were sick during their performances!
The way he turns the distortion that he uses on and off in the middle of phrases is nothing short of masterful. This is the definitive version of this song since I heard it. Also, it's the only cover of Paul Simon's music he ever shared on his own social media.
Thank you so much for not continuously interrupting the song to make comments until the very end! So many people who do reactions continuously stop the song and I believe that when you do that you miss out on how a song flows into points of the song that raise the hair on the back of your neck! I enjoy reactions in which I can enjoy the song and actually see the facial expressions of others where they are moved exactly at the same points of a song that I am! Thank you for your reaction!
It's a RARE occasion that someone covers a song and does "Better" at expressing the emotion of the song than the original artist. THIS proves that it can happen...
to be fair both versions employ completely different emotions. Both classics in their own genre. I would say it was possibly a genre change, or a change in attitude, inflection and intention with how they were both sung.
You were all like "Disturbed isn't my thing" and I was kind of chuckling because I felt the same way (and still mostly do except for this cover). He was actually recovering from a cold when he performed this and I still think it's better than the official video (though you might want to watch that). I really hope he does a more music that's out of the usual Disturbed wheelhouse because he's got a voice that more people really should hear.
Everyone is going to tell you everything you need to know about the song, the band, the singer.... etc. But, me? When you get time, and you don't have to react to it, but I would like you to see their actual music video for it. The visuals.... as a musician and an artist, you would see.... well, I see it as an absolute beautiful background story, the song's lyrics being painted... music writers without instruments, and musicians without music.... coming together to be one.... It's worth the time, imo.
I totally agree with this. The video enforces the story and (for this version) backs up the vocals. It woud be interesting to 'see' the reaction but not necessary.
100% agree! This song is amazing but their video for it is just incredible. You have to check it out. And if you haven’t already reacted to it you need to react to Pentatonix version of this song. It is amazing also.
I watched and waited with anticipation. I react at the same places, when the singer starts low, when he goes high, and when the growl appears. Years after my first viewing I still get goosebumps. I enjoyed your reaction.
I, like you, don’t normally listen to the music of Disturbed, but I absolutely love their cover of this!! Every time I’ve seen it, I think I’m probably watching with my mouth open, in awe of this man’s vocal talent and the emotion he brings to the song!! I was watching you and could tell you loved it, especially toward the middle when the orchestra came in!
I really like that you acknowledge the scene that was set. Music is about making people feel emotion and he was ALL IN when he decided to do this cover. He spent 6 hours in the recording studio bringing his vision of this cover to life when most other songs are done in 1 hour of laying down the vocals. Having the visuals and the full orchestra and all of the small nuances that perfectionists never miss just brought it all together and left me with goose bumps and an addiction to more. Thanks.
You have got to check out the official video for this. It is as visually striking and moving as his performance. Also the emotion starts to build much sooner, and his vocals are even more growlier near the end.
Let me just drop this here...I came upon Disturbed from the band Pentatonix and THEIR cover of this, which is amazing...I had no idea who Disturbed was, hadn't heard his amazing vocals yet...my genre is 80s new wave, but I really like metal bands slow songs, don't care for metal, but some of these metal heads have an amazing voice... David was classically trained to be a cantor Anyway, have a good one
Hooray! Someone who didn't talk over the top of the song and pause it every few seconds. I love seeing people's enjoyment and astonishment at David Draiman's voice, appreciating it properly without stopping to talk until the end. Too many reaction videos don't truly react because they don't listen to it properly before deciding to chat. Thank you :)
People write off David Draiman and Disturbed as metal, dark, and profane, and I understand why. Down with the Sickness is their most well known song and it is all those things. But David, in my opinion, is one of the greatest modern vocalists. He has such power, control, and raw skill that he stands above so many. And this cover absolutely allowed him to convey this. Some of his later music had a much better message than the Sickness album, such as his cover of Genesis' Land of Confusion. I adore David, and I hope we continue to get amazing music from him for years to come.
Great reaction. You let the song play all.the way through. You must do that, to get the full impact. The chill bumps and misty eyes. You will want to listen to it over and over with your eyes closed:-)
a beautiful beautiful reaction. and you covered every portion of the performance. from voice to stage prescence. and he is amazing. and i am a subscriber. love your live shows too. had to watch your reaction again. loved it.
To think David wasn't well when he performed this,I can only imagine how f&$#n amazing it would be if he was well!!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖 this song.goosebumps every damn time 🎶🔥🎶🔥🎶🔥🎶🔥🎶
This song is over 60 years old, written by Paul Simon & song by Simon and Garfunkel. Interpreted brilliantly by David Draiman. Over a billion people can’t be wrong…..
I strongly suggest you also WATCH the Official Music Video, the presentation is phenomenal. The official video by Disturbed “Hold On To Memories” was released Jan 23rd 2020. “Hold on to Memories" is about not only honoring those we’ve lost, but also making the most of our time with those we still have. We are always touched by the stories you share regarding what this song means to you.
When I heard Disturbed covered this I was hoping they would make it heavier. But I was pleased with this version. I understand he was fighting a flu or something. Conan’s sound guy put in some auto tune. David was pissed he had.
Great reaction. Thank you for not pausing right at the crucial timing moments like so many others. Hearing the singing at the beginning I was afraid you wouldn't be all that impressed. Now I'm worried I'm starting to run out of Disturbed - The Sound of Silence reaction videos.
The official video is very good as well. You should also check out Disturbed's "Hold on to Memories ," "A Reason to Fight," and "The Light " they are great and very different from their normal growling metal.
As far as I'm concerned he owned this song. I've heard the original and never cared for it, I've heard Tim Foust and Peter Hollens version (I'm a Home Fry all the way and I love Peter Hollens as well) and many other versions. Disturbed is by far my favorite. There's just something his voice adds to the lyrics that just is perfect. If you want one on the same level in my opinion It's Hurt by Johnny Cash. I believe (could be wrong) it was originally done by Nine Inch Nails but Johnny Cash owned it when he redid it. Again just something in his voice and the emotion behind it was a perfect storm. Sadly if you do decide to review that I may not be able to watch it his version of it hits so hard that it's rare I don't cry especially with the video.
I love the original, but then, I'm from the 60s. I like all the versions you mentioned, and the one by Pentatonix as well, but my top two are the original S & G and this one. Totally agree on "Hurt"! I don't allow myself to listen to it very often, because I don't want to get inured to the power and the pain.
His voice at the end part is called “vocal fry”. People who do it correctly, like David, can do it with no damage to his chords. But there are many bands who ruined their voices doing this, shredding their voice and throat, because they did it wrong.
Pausing the reaction feels like….When you’re sharing an intimate moment with your love, and you’re building to a climax, then suddenly your 5 year old is knocking at the bedroom door…’Pause’…😟 Bravo….👏👏👏 to you for doing a reaction video as it should be done…UNPAUSED! 98% of male reactors will pause 3-6 times and start chatting, asking questions etc…🤦🏻♀️ Thanks!! ❤️ 🦋Lily🦋

Great reaction video thanks! You have no idea a lot of reactions to this song are like stop. Start. Stop, starstostarblahhhhh! So annoying! But I love that you just let it roll and reacted after. I don't gravitate toward heavy metal music either. However, their version of this is my favorite of all the covers I've heard. The official video is visually beautiful with the perfect aesthetic for the lyrics, but the singing is tame and toned down compared to the raw emotion in this live version. I love the live percussion and strings, & growls and fry in his voice here.
I believe this version is the one that inspired the Pentatonix version (Scott starting in his lower range for example, plus the way they built the song up). I know you've already reacted to that but it might be worth listening again as a comparison. (Or just for the sake of enjoying PTX singing it again. 😉)
A suggestion for a reaction - "Monsters" by James Blunt. Six months ago, he found out that his father had stage 4 kidney failure. He wrote the song as a message to his father. Be sure to watch the official video, which includes his father in it. The video was filmed the first week in January, and in the last week in January a distant relative was found who could donate a kidney for transplant. The operation was apparently successful, but the song is still powerful.
I've heard Simon and Garfunkel my whole life, my mom loved this song. Disturbed's version blew me away when this version came out. I love the intense they brought to the song, it made me notice the lyrics in a different way. The version with Peter Hollens and Tim Foust are beautiful, (and I'm a big fan of Tim's voice) but more like the original. And I have to admit that för me, nothing beats Disturbed
Man..i dont know how many times i listened to it now in short range of time i just cant get enought...away an hour i want to hear it again...well its a cheap addiction..can live with it..)) by the way..think the studio version is best..it got more rawness and passion in it.
If you watch the video (Below) of the Disturbed discussing the song David talks about meeting Paul Simon and how Paul was so impressed with how Disturbed covered the song that he posted it on his own social media pages (which was the 1st time every Paul Simon did that for anyone covering his work). th-cam.com/video/ntNfwoKD0XA/w-d-xo.html

The studio version is shit. Too oveeer produced. This version shows David's powerful voice off better.
Couldn't have said it better
They won a Grammy for this performance!
I feel like this cover with the slower tempo, the orchestra, and his powerful gravely voice just makes the song so much better
David Draiman's voice is AWESOME!! Control is AMAZING!! Best ever!!
