    Another great video Darren! It made my recent installation of an UltraStudio 4K Mini with an FSI monitor go smoothly. One helpful hint I learned is that the audio delay parameter in Resolve Preferences only applies if the video and audio are being sent to a BMD I/O device. If audio is being sent somewhere other than the I/O device, that parameter, which can go as high as 500ms has no impact of an audio delay. I tested it extensively, at least on a Mac, and that parameter impacted the delay if audio and video are sent to the 4K Mini, but not if audio was sent out of the Mac system device (like a USB interface or the Mac headphone Jack).

    Audio monitoring delay was allways a problem for me (using older versions of BM cards) how do you know to set your specific time in Miliseconds (287)? is there a tool for measuring this?

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Aerial. No idea what values you need TBH. We dont do audio at my post facility - fully picture post. In the edit page my sync is matched to my external monitor and Genelec speakers are connected direct out of the Ultrstaudio box and it is in sync. On the GUI I have to monitor audio from the Mac to keep sync. I always use the box and external viewing/listening.

    thnx for the great tutorial! I've got one question:
    I've recently purchased an ultrastudio 4k mini and connected a playback monitor using the SDI out (converted the signal to HDMI for my desktop monitor) which works fine, but I'm using the HDMI out to connect to a client monitor (Sony Bravia QD OLED), the two are not in sync. The desktop playback is in sync with Resolve, client monitor lags behind like 5 frames. Is there any way to solve this, or is this something that you just have to deal with?
    Cheers!

    Great video Darren. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. I have a query, In Davinci Preference Settings do we need to check 'Use Mac display color profiles for viewers' and 'Use 10 bit precision'? . I am using non colormanaged work flow with Timeline setting Rec 709 (Scene) and my monitors calibrated for Rec 709. TIA.

    Awesome! Curious about whether to check "Use 4:4:4 SDI" or not?
    And another tutorial idea that I am CERTAIN would do very well is a definitive guide on how to hardware calibrate a screen, most of us who need the info rely on DisplayCALand it is super confusing. One simple example of something I am still unclear on is when to choose 2.4 vs 2.2 gamma, does that depend on the specs of the monitor you are calibrating or on your intended workflow? There are so many gotchas, it would be a perfect video for someone with your trusted experience and knack for explaining details.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If your monitor is 4:4:4 capable and your IO is too, then yes. You can check with an image that Ive seen on the web, but I can't remember where I saw it. It has coloured lines of text and you cant see some if not supporting 444.

    I asked this question on Reddit but didn't get any answer, maybe you will help: Hello!
    For monitoring I use DeckLink card which is connected to Benq PD2700U, this monitor has gamma presets, but which one should I choose? I suspect it must be Rec. 709 but when I choose this gamma image looks really dark, so I'm not quite sure. In sRGB it looks fine though. Maybe I missed something and I have to change project settings?

    For now at least, I just want to get a good clean signal for grading, so I’m thinking about getting the UltraStudio Monitor 3G.

(Do you have an affiliate link?)
    Just wondering though…

    1. What happens when I’m working with 4K or 8K footage? Does my timeline have to be in 1080P to work?

    2. What happens when I am sending the signal to a 1440P or 4K monitor?

3. When would I need to upgrade to an I/O solution that is 12G (Supports 4K)?

    4. Besides not having as much I/O, when would I wish I’d gone for the Mini 4K? (Or higher).

5. Lastly, when you say “calibrated monitor”, are you talking about a Flanders or similar? Or could a good quality screen (BenQ/Eizo etc) work for now?

    How loud is the Ultrastudio 4k Mini? I'm really hesitant to add one to my editsuite due to seeing a lot of comments about excessive fan noise with some models (my setup is almost completely silent at the moment). As I do edit, sound and color I'm really not keen on compromising on sound by adding a noisy IO box, but I also don't want to compromise on image quality.

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is silent. It is about 1.5m from me now and I cannot hear it at all unless I really tune in to it. I returned a set of hard drives once as too noisy so I understand your concerns.

    Thanks for the video. I’m curious of your comment on working on a reduced timeline res (7:08) when working on a 4k/UHD project. Wouldn’t this resolution reduction make colour grading less accurate? When grading, wouldn’t you want to see as many of the pixels as possible? What am I missing here?

    • @DarrenMostyn
      @DarrenMostyn  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      technically yes, but you won't change your grading for that level of detail. I zoom in at 1:1 for texture work sometimes or noise.

    Darren forever grateful for you sharing your trade experiences with us!! I’ve connected the ultra studio 4k mini to my M1 Mac workflow as you’ve suggested. I was wondering if you or anyone here has experienced workarounds for a few caveats…
    1. Is it possible to use the monitor as a secondary GUI monitor when setup as you outline? Or can the monitor only be used inside of DR as a hero monitor?

      Hi. Q1. Yes you can use a second monitor if it has a computer display input (My Flanders couldn't, but an Eizo or my ASUS UCG could) but you need to switch the input away from SDI/HDMI to do so. Q2.When its RENDERING.... If you mean if you are listening to spotify or radio then YES...it does whilst rendering. The processing is being given priority to Resolve. However, Windows 11 doesn't recognize my second monitor in the Display settings menu. Is this normal? In the monitor's menu settings, there isn't an option to change the aspect ratio. A couple of points that may help folks. You do mention... Oh dear, gold plated cables... are not a mark of quality. The standard the cable meets is the important thing. A cable from a reputable distributor (eg electronics parts wholesalers or equipment houses) that is taged for say HDMI 2.0a should perform as expected regardless of its finish.
    You don't need to spend fortunes on such a cable. Just get the correct one and keep it under 10 meters in length or go with an active optical cable.
    Alternatively use sdi. Here again it doesn't need to cost a fortune. It does however need to have component parts that meet the standard. So 75 ohm BNC connectors and a suitable 75 ohm co-axial cable eg rg59/g. Old studio patch leads should do the job, or even cores from triax. All too often the wrong 50 ohm BNC are fitted.
    Don't spend hundres unless you have to offset profit.
    Next up (resolve 18.6 now) clean feed certainly displays to a lower resolution display. 4k timeline, 4k raw footage, 1080p hdmi clean feed. No issues.
    The only problem i had was my ultrastudio sdi causing the system to hang resolve after a driver merry go round to get it working again in the first place. BMD sometimes forget the older hardware in the release dash.
    Great videos spurring me on to better videos. I appreciate your efforts.

      SDI for Flanders and then we take an HDMI out to a HDMI splitter to 'flat screen' GZ2000, ProArt UCG and Omniscopes. You dont need a splitter if just 2 monitors - 1 SDI and 1 HDMI. Hope that helps. Darren

    FANTASTIC video! The level of detail of the information is great!
    This is my 4th or 5th time in your channel and i think i subscribed the first time i visited your channel
    If you allow me 2 questions please, that would be awesome!
    In the minute 2:15 you talked about "you can have multiple conections connected at all time"
    and eventually it can be switch in the "software which connecetion you want to use"
    Can you monitor your timeline in two displays, full screen, at the same time? For example one connected via HDMI
    and the other connected via SDI? Maybe one in 1080 and the other one in 4k?
    My 2nd question is: you have the scopes in the left monitor in your desk. Do you have that monitor connected
    to another I/O, the same UltraStudio 4K Extreme or directly to you Mac?
    Thanks in advance an sorry for my English; I'm still learning

    • @akyhne
      @akyhne ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure most motherboards have dedicated PCI lanes, that are not shared, for the GPU slot (the first slot from the CPU).
      Even if the PCI slot was shared, most GPUs run full speed on 8 lanes, with PCI-4. You'd need something like a RTX 4090, to experience your GPU being hindered.
      And if your MB is PCI-E 5, theres no issue at all.
      You can also just choose another free PCI slot slot, that doesn't shate lanes with the first slot. Your MB manual will tell you, which slots are sharing bandwidth.

      Hi Yao. My equipment has been built up over many years and is high spec for broadcast delivery to BBC, Amazon etc. you really don't need this much kit to promote social media content or even for broadcast TBH. We only have top level kit as we are a working post facility for broadcast and so it helps our workflow. Minimum - a good a laptop. ideal - a calibrated monitor - even better - an IO device and a calibrated monitor. Hope that helps and best of luck with the project.
