    A song sung in Latin (the male chorus) and in French...questioning the Marquis de Sade on his humanity and religion.
    How often do you hear anything like that?
    The chorus is a band called 'Gregorian' (Masters of Chant) They have a big catalog.
    This is an awesome song, was blown away the first time I heard it, immediately picked up on the languages...I was stunned by the whole thing.

    In the 60s my Catholic Church during High Mass, the choir (not Monks) sang the Gregorian Chants. The Mass, Chants and songs were in Latin. This song came much much later so it was a nice memory. Of course it wasn't exactly like this but I distinctly remember "Hosanna". Years later my teenage daughter and I enjoyed this album. Thanks for the memory.

    One of my favorite albums, ever. It was so different, mixing the sacred and the profane (and the old and the new) in a totally new way, and it was sensual and downtempo. In this song, the Latin chants are sacred church songs, and the French text questioning Sade represents the profane. The Marquis (mar-kee) was a French political activist and nobleman, famous for his libertine novels, but was also imprisoned for sex crimes, blasphemy and pornography. In French, she repeatedly asks: "Sade, tell me; Sade, give me." The male voice asks: "Sade, tell, me: What do you seek? Good by the way of Evil? Virtue via Vice? Sade, tell me: Why this Gospel of Evil? What is your religion; where are your followers? If you're against God, you're against Man. Sade, tell me: why do you need blood to experience pleasure? Pleasure without love. Does emotion no longer exist within the cult of Man? Sade, are you diabolical or divine?" (my own translation). Anything from the first three or four of albums is great.

    What a fantastic song and geat memory of dancing to this.. I havent heard it in years. The 7 minutes fly by. I remember when Enigma first came-out and I couldn't believe it. It was amazing new concept in music for me. I have been a loving fan ever since.
    Europe has always had some cutting edge dance, trance, house, and club music. I've always loved trance and listen to down tempo chill music (psybient, psybient chill). The beats are soothing for programming, or deep data analysis. I use out as a meditating tool too.
    Check out Androcell: Seahorse Dreams, Carbon Based Lifeforms: Central Plain. I have a healthy sized playlist on Spotify. Lots of European soundscape talent.
    The Psybient genre of trance is all about dropping mushrooms and tripping. I get high and listen to it all the time.
    Great tune and reaction. Thanks for doing something off beat. Check out The KLF: 3AM Eternal for another cool electronic band from the 80s. Came out around the same time as Enigma and not as chill. I think. I don't remember a lot of the 80s. Or early 90s.

    Re: "Marquis de Sade" -- Marquis is Marquess in English, a rank of nobility right below a duke, and is pronounced like "marquee" in French. I'm not going into details (google him yourself, please, if you want), but the tales of his ... let's call them "romantic escapades", shall we? ... gave birth to the concept and term of "Sadism". Yep, *that* stuff. Research at your own peril. 🙂
    Not that I give a hoot; it's just a fantastic piece of music. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

    I used to listen to Enigma all throughout the 90s. Always playing it on long flights or even putting it on my wallkman and falling to sleep with it. I feel this entire album is meant to listen to the entire thing all in one sitting. the songs play with each other and tell a story. Much like Pink Floyd's The Wall.
    There are a few other albums that were great.

    Love how they incorporated those Gregorian chants. You did your usual excellent job of describing the mood of the song, Salvo. The Marquis de Sade, (pronounced Mar-KEE da Sod), was a French writer, (among other things), whose characters often engaged in painful sexual practices, leading to the term Sadism--i.e., S & M--being named for him. Kinda puts an extra twist on the tune, lol.

    Hypnotizing. The album is just awesome. The two parts of Sadeness here were roughly mixed together. The horse you mentioned was the opening of Find Love.
    Mea Culpa and The Rivers Of Belief are two other highlights on the album. The last one was released as BackTo The Rivers Of Belief, consisting of the last three pieces of the album, just breathtakingly beautiful. Mea Culpa also was released as a remix ( fading shades mix) where samples from other tracks were incorporated.

    This was SUCH a huge part of my college life back in the day. 😆LOVED this shit. I'm glad you dug it - if you like down-tempo, I think you'll really dig some "slowcore" music. I love the band Low, and one of the best is "Monkey." Thanks Will AND Sal for the trip back to '90! 😊

    This song has always been so entrancing to me, since I first heard it back in the 90s. Just the combination of everything; the chants, the sexy French whisper, the woodwind sounding melody... chef's kiss. Moby did a lot of experimental stuff around this time, too, if you're interested. My faves are Porcelain, South Side (with Gwen Stefani - check her out, too), and We Are All Made of Stars - a song he wrote in the wake of 9/11 after he was stuck in his New York City apartment for days following the attacks.

    When we reach the 21st century this kind of music was called by music critics: "Trance-ambient " music. Music crafted and created for taking the listener into an alter state of consciousness or Trance. Check "Seraphim" by The Dead Can Dance. It is a banger!!!

    12:20 Ha! For that, you have to watch their original video of their song "Principles Of Lust". 😅😅
    And I don't want to judge you for not knowing who was Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade, and what inspired 🤣🤣

    'MCMXC A.D. which was released in 1990', ....which, for those of us who don't know.....
    MCMXC is Roman Numerals for 1990...
    M = 1000
    C=100
    C BEFORE the M Denotes take away 100 from the proceeding 1000 = 900
    Thus MCM
    M = 1000
    CM = 900
    = 1900
    Again
    C =100
    And
    X = 10
    Thus
    XC
    10 from the proceeding 100 =90
    😊
    I just gave myself a little 'refresher course '
    The Marquis de Sade
    Pronounced Mar key day Sahd...
    His pleasure in causing people pain is where we derive the word 'sadist'.
    ✌️🙏

    Want a 90's new age trip? Check out: Deep Forest, Adiemus, Delerium, Enya (obviously) Lorena Mckennit... And just SO many compilations you would get at "The Nature Store", or your local New Age shop with a CD spinner. That's where all 90's witches got their jams I'm pretty sure. Good times they were!
