Thanks guys, I'm really glad you enjoyed it. The chant is a drinking chant from an indigenous group in a coastal area of Taiwan, and the drum beat is sampled from Zep's "When The Levee Breaks." Nick, sorry you're not feeling well, get better soon, bud.

Same here. This song, plus 'Sadness', takes me back to when I lost my precious husband in 1997. I had forgotten I had ordered their c.d. It came the same week he passed. It was the perfect music that helped me through a very difficult time. It is timeless, 'other worldly' and takes me away from this crazy world we live in.

This reminds me of my dad. He loved enigma and often use to play it for me back in the 90s. I would do anything and everything to be able to listen to this wonderful tune with him now. 🙂‍↕️

The chanting is by Difang Duana (March 20, 1921 - March 29, 2002) and Igay Duana (August 9, 1922 - May 16, 2002), Chinese names Kuo Ying-nan (郭英男) and Kuo Hsiu-chu (郭秀珠), were Amis husband and wife farmers from Taiwan who became known as a folk music duo who specialized in traditional Amis chants. The Amis people are an ancient (to present day) indigenous people in Taiwan.

It makes me emotional to see in people's comments that there are still people who listen to Enigma. My childhood comes to mind. I think Enigma is of higher quality than most of the music produced today. While listening to Enigma, my soul feels like it's in a different universe. It is impossible to explain these feelings. But I always wonder if there is anyone out there who feels the same. :)

I think Enigma is the project name given by its creator Michael Cretu. In the Enigma project Cretu now has at least 8 albums. I first started listen to Enigma back in middle school more than 37 years ago on Cassette tape.

Another vote for The Eyes of Truth.
(It is the song before Return to Innocence on the same album.)
The original Matrix movie used that song during the trailer. The music worked well with the dark visuals and action clips.
I was at a pub and slipped the song into the jukebox play list. I was surprised at the emotional response for the 20 year old (at the time) non-traditional music.

Enigma is a OG of this genre. They're the one who started this trend back in 80s with song "Sadness " . Thanks to Enigma we have: Enya, Adeamus, Moby , etc. Enigma is in their own league period.

More Enigma please! If I recall, a few seconds later when starting the next song "I Love You... I'll Kill You", they sampled the drum pattern from the beginning of Genesis "Fading Lights". In a different song called "Eyes of Truth", they also sampled the drum pattern from Peter Gabriel's "Kiss That Frog".

I have this album (Cross Of Change). Most of the songs blend into the next. I Love You, I'll Kill You is another of my favorites on this one. Sadeness is the first song I heard from Enigma. It was unique in that it used Gregorian chants with a dance beat.
Last week Deep Forest popped back into my head. I think you'd like some of their stuff, too.

I love you guys. I appreciate the inclusion of this category of music. I remember back when Enigma's first album came out and helped to make this type of World oriented music popular.... Enya, Era, Deep Forest, Andreas Vollenweider, Peter Gabriel, etc. I've been in love ever since. I was wondering if you have ever heard of Loreena McKennitt? Beautiful Canadian artist who's music fits into this category. She is able to play a multitude of instruments and speaks several languages. She spends a long period living in specific areas of the world learning the history of their customs and related music and then makes an album within that theme. Masterpieces, really. Songs like "Tango To Evora", "Bonny Portmore" (used in the Highlander series), The Mummers Dance (Used in the Legacy TV Series). My favorites are "The Gates of Istanbul", "Caravanserai", "Beneath a Phrygian Sky", "The Bonny Swans", "Marrakesh Night Market", "All Souls Night", and "The Lady of Shalott". Sorry if you've already addressed her on your channel. If she is unknown to you, you're welcome!

Enigma is a german project from Michael Cretu and his ex-wife Sandra.
'Return to Enigma" was a very famous hit in 1993.
Please continue with new Enya stuff :)

"Afer Ventus", "Echoes in Rain", Evening falls".

Enigma, a musical project in which many musicians took part. Created by Michael Cretu. For the second album "The Cross of Changes" Michael Cretu traveled the world to gain new musical impressions, which he expressed very well in this album. For me personally the most beautiful album. And yes, Sadeness is also from Enigma.

You know where I first heard this? I was with my with my wife, shopping in "Express". It was a hip woman's clothing store at the mall. Some guys hated shopping. Not me. Sitting on a sofa, watching my beautiful wife trying on clothes, in a clean kool store, filled with pretty women wasn't so bad. Actually....everything about the store was a visual treat. This song was playing on some loop, with me relaxing...taking it all in. It was a great way to spend a wife day. Next mall stop, Mrs Fields cookies.
Mrs Brown You've Got A lovely Daughter, yesterday and this song now, are significant moments in my life. Ya can't make this stuff up. For me, this is hanging with the wife - while shopping song.

❤ The movie SLIVER was on tv this week, and Enigma's Carly's Song was on as i passed by. It made me want to hear THIS song. Had to call up Redbone chants,13th hour and Niji trance, and Robbie Robertson's Mahk Jchi. Followed by some The Hu with Wolf totem and Eivor's outdoor performance of Trodlabundin. Then this morning, just scrolling through there, this was. Thanks.

Awesome song, awesome album and group / project. Both albums MCMXC a.D. and Le Moi Est Mort, Vive Le Roi are amazing listening experiences from start to finish. "Back to the Rivers of Belief" is one of my favorites along with "Principles of Lust".
The song you're thinking about with the "Sade, dis-moi" lyric is from the song "Sadeness" at around the 2:00 mark which is part of "Principles of Lust" at the beginning.

Perhaps you would enjoy some more Vangelis, Nick? Not the poppy stuff he did with Jon Anderson, but from his solo albums, or even some of his film score albums, such as _Antarctica_ or _1492: The Conquest of Paradise._ From his non film scores, I would recommend "Himalaya" and "Summit" (the two tracks are joined) from his _China_ album or "Heaven and Hell, Part 1" from _Heaven and Hell._ "Alpha" from _Albedo 0.39_ and the title track from _Spiral_ or "To the Unknown Man" from the same album. All good stuff.

What you are taking as a native American tribal chant is actually an Austronesian Amis (AKA Pangca) chant from Taiwan. I took it for native American the first time I heard it too. This was one of the things that got me interested in all the commonality/similarities in music (instuments, rhythms, sounds of ethnic songs) you can find in cultures that are separated by thousands of miles and have had no interaction with each other. I found this to be strongly true of different Asian cultures and North American native tribes.
And yes, this (like all eight of Enigma's albums) is a concept album.

I thought it was a native american chant as well, but it is actually an indigenous Taiwanese Drinking Song! You can find the original that was sampled on youtube.

More than the song of the American Indians, I would say that it is a Lappon Sami or joik song. This song is very similar to the traditional songs of Lapland, in northern Europe. th-cam.com/video/woEcdqqbEVg/w-d-xo.html

Oddly enough. This is a beer drinking song in tai or somewhere in the east. You can find an 70 year old couple singing this chant on you tube🤘❤️🇺🇸 enigma was sued for sampling the chant. And that old couple collects 100% of royalties. Names are difang and igay
